Hehe, a coincidence probably. A friend has a camping place there.
But I'm always interested in the history or culture of the place. Anyhow, The Westhoek is a long time ago. We visited the area in elementary school, when I was 12 I think. It's so close (50km) and I've not really been there again, except for Ypres a couple for times, the 'capital' of the battles and misery during WWI.
Last year, I guided around two Americans from the company where I work (who were temporarily in Belgium) and they had never heard of WWI. We went to see the cemeteries and the the Menin Gate, one of the most impressive and touching places I visited, and each time it creates the same effect. Every single day, since few years after the end of WWI, the buglers of the fire department of Ypres play The Last Post on horns at 8PM. Traffic is shut, people gather at the gate (a lot of British people! even on the most random day), ... An impressive silence and remarkable event, reminding us of The Big War.
When you are in Belgium, people always tell you to go to Bruges, Ghent or Brussels, but when they ask me, I add Ypres. It's too important to forget this place! Has anyone been there? If you're ever around, i'll take you there!Kazoo -

In many ways -sociologically and psychologically- World War I has made much more of an impact on the history of warfare and politics than World War II has.
It's mainly the Nazi horrors (and -oddly enough- to a lesser degree the use of the atom bomb) that have made World War II stand out in history the way it did.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

But have you ever gone out with £20 and spent £30? I'm sure these things have a way of balancing themselves out.

Nothing tonight. I stayed up to 5 in the morning last night, in a smorgasboard of tapas, beer, wine and rum. Although I've received a couple of offers to go out, I've declined. I'm not very good at going two days in a row anymore, unless it's a holiday trip of some sort.I am extremely serious. -

Make it even more perfect with girls. In fact, you wouldn't even need Splinter Cell at all. More of a hindrance if anything. -

Grmph....
That was the sound of a creaking, 32-year-old "partyman" trying to muster up the energy to pop another beer and get ready for another wild night. It helps to repair a bit, though. Tonight is a birthday party for a friend of mine, one of the coaches we had in the reality TV/football thingie I participated in a few years ago.
Dress-code is high, so I'm expecting some high class thing (which may or may not work out well).
Cheerio, Miss Sophie!

I'm staying in tonight, since I've almost had no sleep tonight. Yesterday a friend and I decided to take the rucksack and tent, choose a random location in Belgium to spend the night there. After driving 3 hours with the train we arrived at the other side of Belgium, around 10PM. Dark and cold, we had to call a camp place owner (since wild camping is not allowed in our country). He picked us up and on arrival we had a local beer before putting up our tent. We brought us a bottle of liquor and had fun while talking and refilling the glasses, laying on our back watching the stars (would've been romantic if it had been a lady .. damn) on a camping place in the middle of nowhere.
It was a terrible cold night, nearing zero degrees. I didn't have the best material with me so I haven't slept much. We were a bit mislead by the very good weather the past days, forgetting the cold nights.
Anyhow, today we hiked several kms through intense sun and a beautiful landscape in Limburg, with lots of little ponds and hills. We hiked back around 3PM this afternoon, and hitchhiked in the meantime to get the train on time. Somebody picked us up and did drive the last 6km for us, just to arrive on time and hear the train was cancelled.
We spend another hour laying a bit in the sun, enjoying the weather with music and a book. Just got home, I'm completely sunburned in neck and arms but did enjoy a bath and some music.
Off to bed now!
