All of the gripes I've been reading about Abram's directorial style are exactly my problems with Michael Bay. I think Bay is a worse offender in all of those. Secondly, I think that what Abram's lacks in cinematographic style he usually makes up for in story (again, unlike Bay). He typically spins a good yarn.
This trek doesn't look like a traditional trek film in the least. I like ST, though, and I like Abrams, so I'll see it, though I'm not getting my hopes up too high. The best thing about this film, imho, will be the score. Giacchino on star trek! Can't wait. -

Michael Bay is the definition of Pure Hollywood entertainment. Nothing wrong with that at all and when i want to see cool pop-corn mindless big-ass entertainment, he's where I go.
Now since not everyone can be Akira Kurosawa's, Wong Kar-wai's or Scorsese's, i think Bay it's just fine and uber-cool in what he does. So is J.J.Abraams in another level. Of course it's not obligatory for everyone to like their styles but i don't think that anyone out there who manages to create something authentic, be it the gentlemen of this topic here or the Wachowski brothers and Tarantino or the frantic camera work of Tony Scott is to be accused of anything. At least they have a distinct style, recognizable way ahead of the usual hordes of talentless hacks who make flicks assigned to take away uselessly couple of unmemorable hours of your life, killing you inside little by little, each and every time.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

The trailer has some amazing widescreen landscape shots.
True... but how long does the JJ stay on one shot before cutting to another. That's my issue.
Ah... I see. Well, interestingly, Abrams (or Orci?) stated that one of the most amazing things of Trek was that moment in ST:TMP when Kirk was shuttled to the refitted (movie) Enterprise, and how awesome it was to give the audience the time to get the feeling of the sheer beauty and size of the ship. This might be an indication that they will try to recapture that feeling somehow, and I think it can´t be done with quick cuts.
On the other hand, ST:TMP with its 20+ hours of actors staring at spectacular effects work that wasn´t there while filming is certainly not what a 21st century audience wants. As much as I loved that, Trek was always most exciting when things got speeded up. So I´m all for this kind of revival. -

True, I guess I just don't like his style. No substance... mind you, I do like popcorn flicks... but take for example Paul Verhoeven, he can give an action movie just a little bit extra spice and typical style that is so more interesting and actually genuine cool. (e.g. Total Recall) Unlike the pretty big loud explosions, loud music/sound effects of a Michael Bay pic which are just screaming: "i am cool, I am hip" - the harder one tries to push this fake coolness, the more uncool it becomes.
Some personal picks of movies that I find genuine cool, without trying to be cool:
Predator (the first one)
Total Recall
Outpost.... (yeah, not really... but still pretty cool)
here is a trailer:

Being a fan of Trek movies (I always missed the TV shows for some reason) I might see this as well, it looks like just the movie for the new generation, I only hope they didn't throw away the nostalgia factor for us oldies. And will it bring back the magic of Shatner and co?"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

For sure... but we aren't judging the films they are making it's the style in which they shoot. IMHO, a Michael Bay 2 hour plus Pepsi commercial - you know... glossy slow mo dolly shots with people looking at the sky with an American flag waving in the background - is complete and utter

Michael Bay doesn't do that in every movie. Sure it's something he made popular but it's only in some of his movie. If you're talking style of shooting, camera direction, cinematography, then he's better than most directors out there. -

Maybe not that EXACT shot but my God he does the Slow-Mo Dolly Super Low Angle I'm Awesome shot in every film... however, I don't think I've seen ALL of his movies. Anyway, it's total fluff!

Anyway, I saw the trailer yesterday, and I must say that it does have some exciting moments. The shot of Kirk in the foreground and the ship being build encompassing the background is something that peaks my interests. The music is uber cheese and didn't work for me since it was just screaming, "I'm music. I'm exciting music. Are you excited? Please?" -

Thankfully Giacchino is a zillion times more savvy when it comes to music than whomever chose the music for the trailer. -

According to a post at FSM "the piece used in the new Trek trailer is called "Legend" and it's composed by Two Steps from Hell, an L.A.-based production music company."

I think an action movie can get that little extra "oomph" you describe when it either 1) does things tongue-in-cheek [Starship Troopers] or 2) puts the emphasis on character-interaction and chemistry [Predator] or 3) be funny as all fuck [Rush Hour]. Anything else risks being groan-inducing.''The mandate, as well as the benefit, of responsibility is the ability to tell when one can afford to be irresponsible.'' - Me -

Then why is it on my Children of Dune-CD?
(And it is - I checked yesterday; it is War Begins, note for note; if TSfH did anything, they made it longer, that´s all.)

IT IS NOT! Listen to the tracks side by side, the first half of the cue heard in the trailer is nothing like the Tyler piece. Listen carefully from 00:34 onwards, listen beneath the voice-over. It's just trailer music copying real film music, they do it all the time. Re-listen to the chords, the sound, note by note.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Yeah, I figured it'd be a trailer redux of a film cue. It's very close to 'War Begins', but they've put in more synths to make it sound bigger, I think.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

After careful listening, I've finally identified the clip, and will hopefully bring a end to this quibble.
The clip is actually "Edwardo the Barber" from Edward Scissorhands.

I've never seen something of Star Trek actually. I feel really out of this world when watching that trailer. I've no idea where to start either.
Perhaps I just better do nothing and listen to Edward Scissorhands.

Then don´t. This movie is a complete reimagining, and although there will be elements from the original continuity, this movie is clearly aimed to get new audiences. Just watch it when it comes out, and I guess you´ll be fine. -

You missed out the phrase "stupid teenage" in between "new" and "audiences" I think.
