    Hello!

    I want to start a thread about this genius composer! He writes great themes and his music is always melodic.

    If you are not familiar with his work, this is what I recommend you:

    I would highly recommend seeking out Le Petit Poucet. A beautiful score with an excellent theme.

    Le Petit Poucet is amazing. The "lost" theme is one of the best theme I have ever heard. Brilliant.

    My Neighbor Totoro is really good. I also recommend Kiki's Delivery Service and Arion Symphonic Suite.

    I own quite a lot of Hisaishi's scores, but somehow I always forget that he's such a great composer. When I play one of his discs I'm always blown away again by the sheer beauty of his music...

    Genius. What more can I say. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle are absolute brilliant, but there are some other scores I really admire. "Le Petit Poucet", "Yamato", "A Chinese Tall Story"
    and the latest one - "The Sun Also Rises".

    Have you heard "Asian X.T.C."? Really great contemporary music by Hisaishi, and some fantastic themes... Absolute must have.

    No one wants to comment about it, not in Score Reviews, FSM, not here hm hm... Was he told to copy it, did he rip it off?? That couldn't be...

    I guess only a few people have seen Yamato or heard the score, or they haven't heard The Rock score (?)... nah, I'm just being ignored poor me... ah well

    Have you heard "The Story of the King's Four Gods"? It's also from this year and is, simply put, amazing. I've been trying to pin down my favorite score of the year and right now it's a three way tie between that "Lust, Caution" and "Ratatouille".

    Pretty interesting video -- I only wish I spoke Japanese!

    Also, if you don't have this DVD, I would highly recommend it. A Wish to the Moon is absolute gold. Hisaishi on piano accompanied by nine cellos. It's a great DVD.

    I saw "A Wish To The Moon". Really good concert, but I think a little to boring. I mean... all track are great, and it's fantastic to see Hisaishi playing, but im my opinion it's too long. A had to watch it in two parts... biggrin

  20. Spirited Away is my absolute favorite, but Princess Mononoke and Le Petit Poucet are definite keepers as well

    However there is always a track I come back at and that is the simply oh so catchy tune of A Mining Town of Laputa: Castle in the Sky. It is so catchy and fun, I could here it all day long wink

    Anhoo, Hisaishi is a great composer, love his work

    Here is Hisaishi's new theme song to Miyazaki's film Gake no ue no Ponyo which will open in Japan this summer. Can't wait to see the film and hear the score.

    The song is very much in the same playful vain as the lovely Totoro.

  22. My favorite Hisaishi score is probably "Kikujiro." It's more of a small intimate work than a full scale symphonic effort like Spirited Away. Two great themes. Very pleasant.

    Does anyone know why more Hisaishi scores aren't released by western labels? Are the movies he scores just too obscure? I can only think of four U.S. releases of his scores. It a shame you always have to pay $30 for the imports to hear his music, which more often than not leaves me out.

    Kikujiro is the only Hisaishi score I have. It's delightful indeed but it sounds very monothematic-- little variation about one or two themes.

    Japanese imports have always been expensive, isn't it?

    FYI StreamingSoundtracks has a large number of Hisaishi scores that one can listen to. I do like Howl's Moving Castle, Le Petit Poucet, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away from what I've listened over there.

    True, but they are very fine themes! Maybe a little predictable as well, but I really love them. You should definitely pick up Milan's Hisaishi boxset of Spirited Away/Princess Mononoke. Great value and two excellent scores.

    I've had people recommend streamingsoundtracks to me before I just haven't gotten around to trying them yet. I'll always prefer the actual CD though.

    That is the new huge epic Korean movie, right? I want that score being everyone seems to be recommending it. Maybe Milan will release the score in the U.S. when the movie comes out here and I can actually get it at affordable prices.

    Yeap and it's IFMCA nominated for BEST TV SCORE 2007. I've had it for some weeks now and i can tell you it's wholly impressive.

    Absolutely. I'm glad others are singing the praises of this score. It's one of my top three favorites form 2007.
