You can thank Jon Favreau for that. He wanted Debney for the first movie, but he was overruled.

Indeed. I'm amazed they let him get his way this time round given how successful the first one was, with its "music" - but pleased.

He was close to not directing the second movie. After the first movie opened to huge success, Marvel was reportedly giving him the boot from the sequel but after fan backlash on the Internet, Marvel changed their minds. Perhaps one of Favreau's conditions of coming back for Iron Man 2 was that he could have control over who scored the sequel.

...the top of the list that (is) Yvan Cassar's Massai - Les guerriers de la pluie (...) but these scores do not sound like hollywood composers playing around with duduk and female vocals with no purpose or aim, i shall warn you.

confused In my search for good Middle Eastern music this is the first one I tried out, and to me, this sounds like a subtle version of Barry´s Out of Africa. There is some "tribal" stuff at work here, and it´s a nice score, but it doesn´t get me hyped up in any way, nor does it actually feel very Middle Eastern to me.

If you want RC-ish middle eastern music, then try BILL BROWN's Command & Conquer: Generals or such game scores, there's a plethora of them out there, all sounding fun but all the same nevertheless.

Now, HOWARD SHORE's dark and dissonant THE CELL has some very good middle-eastern material, but not your usual kind either.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Or you can always try genuine middle-eastern scores, like ARTO TUNCHBOYACIYAN's Le Voyage en Armenie from 2004.

I wasn´t out for RCish ME music, I asked what you think to be good ME music, but the Massai score wasn´t exactly what I had in mind.

I am now on to Cassar´s L'odyssée, another one of the scores you mentioned, and this is definitely more like it. Still a lot of african stuff, but there is a lot of the kind of ME stuff I like, too. smile Very beautiful, a perfect album for playing in the background AND for full attention listening.

It has elements of the wider area's musical heritage, and the Balkans are too (like Greece and other neighboring countries) influenced by the musical history of the middle-east and Byzantine music.

Which reminds me, Ralph, are you familiar with the Body of Lies score? I think that's the sound you're looking for exactly, and in any case far more interesting than the Soraya underscore.

  4. No, I am not. I´ll check it out, thx. smile

Guys - Debney did a bang up job on incorporating guitars into his Scorpion King score. Chill out!
