A director will establish a relationship with a composer when that comfort level is achieved. There is a chapter in the Mancini biography about the work Henry did for Blake Edwards. Mancini did terror, drama, and comedy for Blake, for a time everything.

Mark Rydell - John Williams
It was the first director in which Williams made a continuous collaboration (The Cowboys, The Reivers, Cinderella Liberty), all before the Spielberg & Lucas movies.
Don't forget there last film together... THE RIVER.
BTW, I'd say the first big professional collaboration for Williams was with producer Irwin Allen. Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants... and then onto the big screen with The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno.

That's right Erik.
I didn't know that collaboration and i overlooked it, because i don't own any of those soundtracks.
But justice for Williams & Irwin Allen credit his done.
