I think the list of deserving Oscar winners far outweighs those we deem not worthy.

Anyone have a list of ALL the score winners?

There have been deserving scores given the award, like Omen, E.T, Lion King, Finding Neverland, LoTR 1 and 3 and most recently Atonement. But the number of undeserving scores being given the award because of all the critical hype factor has been too high also, especially post 2000.

It was all good until they discovered that exotic composer names sell more and are cooler.

This thread should be locked. It gets too much attention before it's even there.

The Academy is stupid, does not like good music and certainly spends way too much money on short video montages.

    Thanks!

Well, looking through that list it's hard to disagree with a lot of the earlier nominations but if I had been around at the time I'd have wished disease and pestilence on the Academy for not even nominating Ralph Vaughan Williams phenomenal score for Scott of The Antarctic in 1948.

Exactly! As Bregt said, academy awards are completely stupid. As a film score lovers, we should not bother about it.

It's such a stupid concept, really, but they make reasonable choices (such as Rahman) more often than they make dumb ones. I don't understand why people get so upset over it. I don't really know why people are interested in it at all. What does it matter?

Since they are not released in the US yet, the best of this year is practically not eligible for Oscar's. Also some composers didn't even bother to submit a 'for your consideration' Oscar promo to the academy. They must know something the rest of the world doesn't then wink

    Check out Mikael's article:

Brian Eno and others not eligible for Oscar & the list of all eligible scores for Oscar consideration

"A number of crticially acclaimed composers will not be a part of the Oscar race this year, The Wrap reports. Brian Eno, who recently scored Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, is not eligible simply due to the reason that the composer never was submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration. According to the Warp article by Steve Pond, Eno “simply felt that he didn’t have time to submit the required paperwork and submit to the type of publicity campaign necessary” to run for an Oscar nomination."

I'm one of those who doesn't quite get the appeal of Up. I don't think it's even Giacchino's strongest score of 2009. I would expect it to probably be nominated, but if The Princess and the Frog gets nominated (and it may) then it would probably have more widespread appeal. Wouldn't surprise me if A Single Man won, though.

And for the legitimate criticism of Avatar for its leaning on previous Horner works, I don't think I saw a film in 2009 which was so well-scored in terms of spotting and dramatic drive. Which is what film music's meant to be all about.

^ I agree. If AVATAR got it, it would be a huge improvement for the Academy (although it'll probably get it for all the wrong reasons, on behalf of them wink ) in comparison to the shitty last 5 years or so of their best original score award.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. I am more against it leaning of previous NON-Horner works, like some Zimmer and JNH.

  2. I wouldn't be against AVATAR getting the Oscar.
I'd prefer it went to CHERI though.
