    Not a bad idea.

The only one you didn't guess is actually a television score. I am rather annoyed that you predicted so well.

I know what it is, but for the sake of mystery, I'll not spill the beans. And it's a great score.
I had a quick squizz at your old 'Best of 2003' article, in which you carefully detailed all the scores you loved in the years prior to that. It did simplify this process a bit. wink

    I'll guess Birth.

Clearly the Pirates of the Caribbean scores will make up the rest of his top five - the only question is, in which order?

I've actually left one of them out in favour of MISSION TO MARS.
It isn't the one you'd think.

I'm struggling to think of a better TV score than Band Of Brothers! (Even though Band Of Brothers is more akin to a series of films rather than a "show".)

There's another tv score higher than Band of Brothers, too...

    Lost Season 1
Battlestar Galactica - both old school and new school versions
    Masada
    QBVII
    Amazing Stories: The Mission

Those are just six off the top of my head...

  3. Actually, it may not be the one I'm thinking. There are a couple which are strong candidates for this reviewer, I'm sure.
A butterfly thinks therefore I am
  4. For me a possible top 5 is...

    Birth (Desplat)
    Dancer Upstairs (Iglesias)
Mission to Mars (Morricone) - feels like the most interesting one he did in this time
Deep Blue (George Fenton) - while all the good stuff comes from Blue Planet, the recording is dynamite
    On the Beach (Christopher Gordon)

Give it another listen D, it's got more great moments in a few brilliant tracks than many composers lifetime outputs.

Yeah, but four of those aren't from the Naughties. I would choose Masada in a heartbeat over Band Of Brothers!

Nope, me neither. That's why I struggled to find a better TV score! Still, I'm curious to find out what it is: I'm terrible at remembering 10 years worth of scores.

My top 10 of the decade (in no particulair order)

    Craig Armstrong - Piano Works
    Kenji Kawai - Avalon
James Horner - A Beautiful Mind
Armand Amar - La Terre Vue du Ciel
Johan Söderqvist - Låt den Rätte Komma In
Alberto Iglesias - The Dancer Upstairs
Eleni Karaindrou - Trilogia I: To Livadi Pou Dakryzei
Paul M. van Brugge - Go West, Young Man!
Reinhold Heil & Johnny Klimek - One Hour Photo
Zbigniew Preisner - Sportman van de Eeuw

These have really rocked my world! Hard to pick them though. I can easily replace some of them with a hundred other titles slant

I trump you! I know two from his list. Horner's score makes my top 10 but One Hour Photo doesn't though I do think it's a good score and a fine listen on album.

I am with Steven on this one. It's very hard to think of another TV score that was such brilliant in all aspects, without a single exception.

The score by van Brugge was written for a documentary that takes you back to the locations where westerns where shot. He's the best Dutch film composer and is a very intelligent writer. This score is a moving and subtle score that expresses the magical sense of these locations. Most of it is extremely moving melodic and atmospheric music. I'd wish I could show you an example of this...

I think hundreds of score have largely impressed me throughout the decade, but you got to choose. Those who know me well can aknowledge this wink

One Hour Photo was one of those eye-openers. The ominous and sensitive atmosphere is really great. The plucking of the strings, the piano, the little chimes and bells.... It's the mood and the same sort of feeling I got with the other 'personal' scores as well.

I'm a Preisner lover. But this was a very personal score to me, since I worked on the temp score and because it's his most optimistic score yet. http://filmmusicnl.webs.com/preisnersportman.htm

It's funny, but most of my choices are very personal and most of them are from my favorite composers. Like A Beautiful Mind is a score that takes me back to a lot of moments when I was in love with someone. Still does and it also comforts me greatly. Same goes for Piano Works.

Armand Amar - La Terre Vue du Ciel (especially the soprano cues have literally made me cry)
Johan Söderqvist - Låt den Rätte Komma In (one of my favorite composers, like Johan himself very much)
Alberto Iglesias - The Dancer Upstairs (very moving)
Eleni Karaindrou - Trilogia I: To Livadi Pou Dakryzei (one of my favorite composers)
Kenji Kawai - Avalon (I got bored while watching the film, but the score knocked me of my socks)

But I think I could easily replace a few of them for others. There's no real personal story behind the Karaindrou, Iglesias, Kawai, Amar and van Brugge.

Well, not all. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, THE DANCER UPSTAIRS, TO LIVADI POU DAKRYZEI, AVALON and LA TERRE VUE DE CIEL are easily the best scores of their respective composers wink

  5. Eleni Karaindrou is a fine composer. Have there been any more installments in the Trilogy?

DANCER UPSTAIRS is great for those who like dark romantic thriller scores. For those who are after something a bit gentler/sentimental, I guess TALK TO HER is the score to get?

There has been a 2nd one, this year, but it's not at the levels of the first score. It's largely minimalistic, repetitive and on the more uninspired side of things.
