  1. Great review James.

For me, Velazquez's score says more to me that Williams' Lincoln does. I do hope that the former's score's quality is not overshadowed by the veteran's solid score.

I liked Lincoln but yeah, Fernando's score has a far greater emotional impact on all levels.

I actually met Fernando in Norway just a week or so ago. He was to attend the premiere of the Norwegian film "Uskyld" ("Innocence") which he was composer on. First he had an interesting lecture earlier in the day about his approach to music for films, then we went out for some beers later and chatted music. If he wins the Oscar some year soon, I guess I might be able to say "Fernando Velazquez bought me a beer!" wink

About his music, he had orchestral training as a cellist at the Spanish opera before moving on to composition, and I feel a strong link between that background and his work. His expressive string writing is something I hope to learn a thing or two from smile

I'm starting gradually to check out more of his work; just ordered "shivers", it seems "the orphanage" is long OOP?

Alcohol says that the "Impossible" theme might be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. I think that video of the director getting teary-eyed during the performance of the theme might be getting to me. It's not often you see something like that. For example, the "Shire" theme performance during the climactic scene of "Return of the King" when everyone is bowing to the hobbits, is one of the most moving music/images merging I've ever scene, but even that doesn't have a supplementary video of Peter Jackson crying to that music being recorded...

any other example of music being so perfect that it does, or might, make the director get visibly emotional? smile
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

It's about time they remade this film. Wasn't it January that the last Hercules film came out?

Anyway, I have high hopes for this score from the fine Spaniard.

Indeed; what is it with this Hercules guy all go crazy about and made a shitload of movies since, ever? is it perhaps, the Greek oiled muscles?

I suppose that is one good thing about it, but I think it's the result of committee - "What's the next franchise we can sell?" It won't surprise me if they make a film about the shake weight given its familiarity.
