  1. Peter, I saw a total of 160. No new species since end of October in 2013.

2014 off to a good start with 54 on my yearlist so far! No new ones yet today though.

Ahhhh, quite a close race then! My last new species I think was also in October, where I saw my first hobby. Three days later I saw the rare baltic gull, which is a subspecies on lesser black-backed gull, so doesn't count in the final score.

Which are your favourite bird observations from 2013?

For me, my highlight was the super rare marsh piper, especially since I was the first in Denmark to see it that year. My second favurite bird was a dotterel that is very rare in my part of Denmark. Oh, and I heard a black woodpecker drumming, which was very impressive. I've seen other rare species, but they weren't my own finds, so can't brag about those.

    Peter smile
  2. Highlight of the year was probably seeing Black Grouse lekking early on a frosty morning at World's End (moors near Wrexham), tracking down a secretive Lapland Bunting on the Great Orme (by Llandudno) and Golden/White-tailed Eagles on Skye.

None "found" by us but great spectacles nonetheless.

Sounds like great experiences. I'm especially jealous that you got to see a black grouse as they went extinct in Denmark just over a decade ago. I once waited for them all morning in a hide at a breeding ground in Sweden, but they never showed themselves. *sighs

Lapland buntings are also semi-rare here, but there are usually a few every year observed in an area not far from where I live, but I haven't had the pleasure to see one yet.

I've seen several white-tailed eagles and it's a great experience every time. They are bloody huge! They are a lot more common in Denmark than in England so it must be even greater to see it there where it's so rare.

Anyway, the game is on for who will see most birds in 2014. *dramatic battle cry

Bregt, yep, in Copenhagen. Despite being densely populated, there's a rather fantastic bird reservation close by, called Klydesøen and I only have to cycle 11 kilometers to get there. Rare species are often observed there, so it's a great place to have nearby. See locations here-> http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/1861/8y1r.jpg

    Justin, lulz!

I wonder if anyone close to me is into Tolkien linguistics. The studies on the languages and the fun stuff that can be found on the internet is amazing. Once in a while I like to dive into it a bit. But my weeks off are almost over so byebye books till summer

Perhaps one more thing I will do soon is download a Tengwar font if there's a good one somewhere.

And I liked math, especially the kind I didn't need because I didn't do the beta subjects. The one I needed, with statistics etc, was difficult and boring to me.

Funny. I'm a complete nut for anything and everything relating to Tolkien's work but I've never really gotten into the language side of things. Even though that was really what he was most interested in. Then again, if you ever need anyone to draw you a map of Middle-earth from memory, I'm your man. biggrin

A thrilling day for science. Just under an hour before Philae makes its touch down on a lonely comet some 500 million miles away from here as part of the Rosetta project.
