  2. Anyone heard of US TV game shows Iron Chef America or The Next Iron Chef? Craig Marks has composed Media Ventures/Remote Control-influenced music for these over-the-top "Kitchen Stadium" versions of Masterchef. Have a read of what I thought of the music:

Most TV is utter crap Tom, I wish I could have your resolve, on the other hand there is superb programming regarding History, wildlife and the like but I get sucked into too much crap most of the time.

  3. When I saw clips of these cooking game shows I had to force myself not to go down the route of "typical US over the top-ness". If you listen to clips of Marks' music it is very appropriate to the style of the show.

What I do on occasion is to rent a DVD if the program has merit such as Planet Earth, key History Channel offerings, historian Ken Burns, and certain British programs on Masterpiece Theater such as Prime Suspect.

  4. I have just added another review to my blog: Mexican film Hidalgo: La Historia Jamás Contada, music composed by Alejandro Giacomán:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/08/ … -giacoman/

This is a score split into 3 parts: ominous, suspenseful and - to be frank - pretty uninteresting orchestral score, a few traditional Mexican tunes and a number of Baroque-style tracks. The Baroque-styled tracks are quite memorable but the highlight is a song featured on the score, "Que Sople el Viento". I have mentioned this song on several occasions on this forum and it again gets a mention in this score.

I've just added a review of a second Cody Westheimer score: The Runner:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/08/ … estheimer/

The Runner is a documentary film about David Horton who, back in 2005 ran the 2,700 Pacific Coast Trail in 66 days, averaging over 40 miles per day!! Westheimer's score is excellent: a memorable and uplifting score that evokes both the emotional and physical determination needed for this marathon run.

Thanks Tom. I know my initial comment on the space ship used on the cover may have been a bit flippant, but the question is a genuine one. I have just assumed that the music used would have been library music.

I have seen than Clifford Vaughan is credited with composing music for Flash Gordon. It was also listed in his obituary back in 1987:

Did you come up with the same name, Tom?

David S. from Monstrous Movie Music doesn't think so. He named off a few films Werewolf of London, The Black Cat, Bombay Mail, Bride of Frankenstein, Franz Lizst. I have the serials so it is time to rewatch and see what I can pick up.

  8. After reviewing Cody Westheimer's score for the endurance running documentary The Runner, I took a listen to score he did for another endurance running documentary entitled UltraMarathon Man. In this, a guy runs 50 marathons in 50 states on 50 consecutive days.

Here is my thoughts (on the score. Anyone who does endurance running of any distance is mad)

  9. I've just uploaded my thoughts on a Middle Eastern-flavoured score by Kareem Roustom to a documentary film entitled Budrus:

    Any comments are welcomed.

  10. I have just uploaded a review of Marco Betta's score to Maria Montessori: Una Vita Per I Bambini, an Italian TV movie from 2007:

    http://reelmusic.wordpress.com/2011/09/ … rco-betta/

Strong on lush strings and piano, I have likened it to something Georges Delerue would have composed. But no one will ever know whether that's right or not! wink

  11. I've added another review to my blog. This time it's a score for a short film from 2008 called Maro. Composed by Aram Mandossian, it's a score that features the siren-like vocals of Carin Gilfry:

    Please take a look.

  12. One of the nice things about reviewing lesser-known scores on my blog is that I am more likely to receive supportive comments back from the composers, directors, etc than if I were to review the mainstream titles.

Thanks to everyone who are checking the blog out.

  14. I've just uploaded some thoughts on a score by a composer named Earl Rose. He composed a score for a documentary film called Inventing LA: The Chandlers and The Times, a film that recounts the four-generation influence a family called Chandler had over the development of Los Angeles when they owned the Los Angeles Times.

Apparently the story of the owners' support for efforts to expand Los Angeles’ water supply for their own personal gain fictionalised and filmed by Roman Polanski as Chinatown.

  19. I am just finishing off a review of Kiril Dzajkovski's excellent score to the Macedonian film The Great Water.

I will be heartily recommending people hunt this score down and to get a flavour of the score itself take a listen to a clip:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4U5dI2T0Io

One of the highlight pieces, it shows off the Balkan music aspect of the music that features heavily in the score. And I just love that percussion rhythm!

    Hope people like it!
