I have been recently showing my new girlfriend my interest in film music and giving her samples of the various stuff. So far I have been able to determine that she likes:

-real (orchestral although she likes some synths).
-upbeat (she liked the theme to Quigley Down Under, Driving Miss Daisy, Miller's Crossing).
-feeling like a kid i.e. animated scores (she liked the opening cue to Hook, the ending cue to Land Before Time and the suite from Mulan).

From this, I have compiled a general list of cues that I think she should like:
-Farewell Suite - Free Willy (Poledouris)
-Main Title - For Love of the Game (Poledouris)
-Transformation - Beauty and the Beast (Alan Menken)
-Main Title - North and South (Bill Conti)
-End Credits - Rescuers Down Under (Bruce Broughton)
-Redeemed - When the Whales Came (Christopher Gunning)
-Main Title - Ever After (George Fenton)
-Finale - The Black Stallion Returns (Georges Delerue)
-The Ten Commandments - The Prince of Egypt (Hans Zimmer)
-Suite 3 - Radio Flyer (Hans Zimmer)
-Main Titles - Chicken Run (Harry Gregson Williams/John Powell)
-Flying Away and End Credits - An American Tail (James Horner)
-The Children/Maybe One Day, Maybe One Day... - Once Upon A Forest (James Horner)
-End Credits - The Rocketeer (James Horner)
-Willow's Theme - Willow (James Horner)
-Main Title - Rudy (Jerry Goldsmith)
-Romantic Flight - How to Train your Dragon (John Powell)
-End Credits - E.T (John Williams)
-Welcome to Jurassic Park - Jurassic Park (John Williams)
-Main Title - An American President (Marc Shaiman)
-Main Title - North (Marc Shaiman)
-Bethany's Wave - Soul Surfer (Marco Beltrami)
-Fly Away Home - Fly Away Home (Mark Isham)
-If You Build It, They Will Come - Racing Stripes (Mark Isham)
-Opening Title - Lauras Stern (Nick Glenne-Smith)
-Main Title - The Great Mouse Detective (Henry Mancini)
-Harry in Winter - The Goblet of Fire (Patrick Doyle)
-Overture - Much Ado About Nothing (Patrick Doyle)
-The Legend of Bagger Vance - The Legend of Bagger Vance (Rachel Portman)
-Opening - Angels in the Outfield (Randy Edelman)
-The World of the Heart - Dragonheart (Randy Edelman)
-End Title - The Natural (Randy Newman)
-End Titles - Animal Farm (Richard Harvey)
-Cliffhanger Theme - Cliffhanger (Trevor Jones)
-Dinotopia Main Theme - Dinotopia (Trevor Jones)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously I don't have to give this all to her. What do you think of the cue list I assembled so far and do you have any suggestions of things I could add?

Hey hey: feeling. Romantic stuff only. 99,99999% of cases smile *

    * although i have to say my fiancee has a fetish (and will recognize anywhere his music) for Brian Tyler. Although something tells me it's not for his music per se although i imagine, cough, what that could be...hmmm....
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Well, just as long as you don't add any Oscar Araujo.
That is reserved for certain other ladies!

    wink

For the rest, I would agree with D., actually: it's a pretty nice, but innocent list.
Pleasant and catering to what you think her tastes are.

Why not be a bit more explicit and drop some more romantic/mood material in there?

  1. Introduce her to Georges Delerue' scores:

    "Maxie"
    "Rich In Love"

According to my prejudice (which is hopefully grounded a little in truth) women tend to prefer themes filled with emotion, especially romance and sadness. I think european composers would be a good place to start, especially: Morricone, Barry, Delerue, and perhaps some Kaczmarek, Portman, Donaggio, Kilar.

    For example:

    La califfa - La califfa
    Cinema Paradiso - Love theme
    Until september - End title
    Hanover Street - Main title
    Her alibi - End title
Crimes of the heart - Crimes of the heart
    Unfaithful - Unfaithful
The joy luck club - June meets her twin sisters
Dressed to kill - The shower
    Smuga cienia - Smuga cienia

This is the kind of stuff I'd fill up if I were to make an album for a chick. Of course everyone differs; I do know some women who are into Hans Zimmer and cool action music.

And yes Oscar Araujo is indeed reserved! wink

Well i sense that messenger between 2 of our fine members has been on fire during the last year or so wink

Anyway, yeah , i'd say romantic european stuff, mostly on the melancholic side and of course - piano driven, is the thing to go. Unless she falls into the 1%, she'll get bored by that list my friend. Don't throw what you'd want to listen in, but play it more romantic. Stay away from more classical film music stuff. From Hollywood i'd say stuff like Alan Silvestri's Forrest Gump; you get the idea smile

Try the hardcore Goldenthal scores first - she'll love anything you play after that.

Not that I don't like Goldenthal, quite the opposite in fact. But he's not a composer I recommend to civilians.

Yeah, but you already HAVE a massive set that corresponds to her criteria you say.
Do you really want to to go the 6 CD box set route for a first acquaintance?

I guess I'm asking whether you'd not be more interested at this point in trimming rather than adding?
