I love this album, as a fan of games and game music in general, there are some great tunes here, some of them I've already heard lots of times, some not, yet the orchestral arrangements are always very well done.
Now they should release a similar album for the Dragon Quest series, because most people just don't know how brilliant that music really is."considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

It got me to listen to it and I was inspired enough to write a review.

I do find the album a mixed bag - purely from a taste perspective. It is good for this music to reach a wider audience. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

“Angry Birds” written by Ari Pulkkinen doesn’t sound like a video game soundtrack.
Ummm... Tom... what is video game music supposed to sound like?

“Legend of Zelda,” written by Koji Kondo, is little more than an imitation of Star Wars music.
Huh? That's not even a fair comment. Yes, the main theme is a march but it's much more than a knock off of Star Wars. Star Wars doesn't even come to mind when I hear that score.
You have much to learn when it comes down to video game music. Is this album is indeed your first foray into video game music then you need to read THIS THREAD and discover a new world of music.

Speaking of ZELDA music, may I recommend this little suite by my Norwegian colleague Kristin Øhrn Dyhrud:

I don't know. I was trying to expand a little bit but obviously I should just stay in my box and listen to my classical/ golden age music which I fully intend to do.

Well are ears are different and this is what I heard. This will be the last opinion I ever give on this forum.

Ummm... that's not the right approach. Again, please visit the following thread and expanded your mind.

I highly recommend Giacchino's Medal of Honor scores which will be right up your alley! Also, there's plenty available to discover in the video game category via the IFMCA. Please, do some exploring! You'll find that a lot of the grand, traditional symphony music you might be craving from Hollywood is actually being fufilled in the video game world. Have you heard John Debney's Liar?! If not, you are missing out my friend.

For about a minute or so but then you failed to mention anything about the gorgeous, soulful and tender rendition of the theme that came immediately afterwards.

Hmm, odd. I find Angry Birds music to have a rather prototypical "game" sound. Remember you're listening to an orchestral version of this.
If that doesn't sound like game music, I don't know what does! -

I wrote the review for Naxos not this board. My contact thanked me twice for making the effort to write about it. For people who listen to classical it might have peaked their interest which is who the audience is. If you look later on you'll see the review on the Naxos website. How they came to be the distributor must have had something to do with the London Philharmonic. I'll go back to Shostakovich/New Babylon which generated little interest on this site. In the classical world it got a lot of interest.

Please re-read the above statement. The review has nothing to do with this board. My mistake was posting it.listen to more classical music! -

I was more confused by the "I'm never posting an opinion here again" comment than the actual content of the review, which I haven't read. It just seemed a very bizarre reaction to a series of posts intended to encourage you to check out some excellent video game music.Movie Music UK http://www.moviemusicuk.us -

I would encourage you to take 5 minutes and read the review. I think if you do you might better understand where I was coming from. I tried to explain what I heard as my very first exposure to video game music. I don't think I came across as a know it all but quite the novice overall. I'm glad that Naxos sent it to me and I was exposed to it. A classical listener who might also be exposed to this type of music for the first time might appreciate my opinion certainly not you or Erik. If you read the Tetris and Angry Birds comments you'll see that I'm relating the material to folk music which is what I heard. I didn't appreciate the attack from Erik making me feel like I made the mistake of taking on this project in the first place or at the very least I should have just sent Naxos the material and not put it up on my blog which is who asked me to write it in the first place. I realize that I know very little about the video music which my review pointed out but the quotes were taken out of context of the article. I think if you read the whole review it will be made a lot clearer to you.

-Erik-
Naxos is a label and a unique distributor that I write for. I wouldn't call 10 or 15 people who happened to read the review on my blog the rest of the world. That is a bit much. Companies such as Sony, RCA, Kritzerland, and La-La Land are treated differently and I publish reviews of their material for my blog. I realize that I know little about video music material just as you would likely not want to engage in a conversation about the 40 different Shostakovich film scores I have in my collection. In a word you would say boring but I treasure them as much as you do your Gerhardt recordings. The fact that he was able to write anything at all under Stalin is amazing. Check out the New Babylon recording and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you hear.

Then you should take it upon yourself to have me banned from MT and there won't be a problem for you anymore. I didn't appreciate the comment about what video music should sound like. If you read my review I clearly explained what I thought I would hear and was surprised that I didn't. Zelda certainly wasn't groundbreaking material but I really liked Angry Birds and Tetris.

You still aren't making a lick of sense, Tom. Your blog is available to the entire world. It doesn't matter how many people visit your site, it's out there for the rest of the world to read. It's not like you are writing exclusively for a specific Naxos publication.
And how are you treating Naxos any different. You are publishing their albums on your site just like you do with Sony, RCA, Kritzerland, and La-La Land.

Stop it, Tom. Stop it. I make a recommendation for you to expand your horizons and you just ignore me. Now, you know that I'm more than open to discovering new music/styles/genres that I have never heard before so take that Shostakovich comment of yours and shove it!

Exactly. Which is why Erik suggested some other game scores you might like.
However, everything you've said in this thread since Erik's initial post has been totally baffling. You seem to be reacting negatively and over-aggressively to things which haven't actually been said to you, and worse still you seem to be having an argument with people for no apparent reason.Movie Music UK http://www.moviemusicuk.us -

I thought he just asked a simple question - what did you expect video game music to sound like? I know your answer is in your review, but would it have been so difficult for you to expand on your thoughts here?
I have absolutely no clue why you took this to be an attack from Erik.Movie Music UK http://www.moviemusicuk.us -

That's exactly what is was. A simple question. I would assume, Tom, that when you read the word London Philharmonc Orchestra on the front cover of the album that you would expect to hear a fully symphonic album and not 8-bit computerized bleeps and bloops.

If you read the review and understand I'm reaching people who are into classical music the whole thing makes sense. And yes I do write material exclusively for them and no one else. Other material I do publish on my blog so in that respect they are treated the same. I just didn't appreciate the comment about what is video music suppose to sound like. Well, I explained what I thought in my review if either of you took the time to read it.

I think it's great that you branch out and review video game music, Tom. Hopefully, you've discovered that it has lots to offer that isn't THAT far removed from your love of classical and orchestral film music. Keep discovering! And I hope you don't mind other recommendations of similar video game scores either.I am extremely serious. -
