Well, I did say that I seemed to be at odds with the consensus! But, yes. I think The Avengers is much better.

  2. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Goldsmith

Inspired to listen to this wonderful La La Land release after the exact same package has been re-released by Intrada, and I'm very glad that it has been. Film music seems to be moving past being a rich man's sport of buying something before it disappears and heading towards the labels trying to get the music out there for all who want it instead, as it should be! From memory I think you missed out on this didn't you Timmer? Now you can pick it up for $5 less!

  3. THE LORD OF THE RINGS SYMPHONY IN 6 MOVEMENTS - HOWARD SHORE

There's something about this recording that doesn't quite make me go crazy for it, even though I love the original scores as much as the next guy. I prefer the Prague Philharmonic recording over this in all honesty, it had much more power and passion from the orchestra and choir IMO.

There's also something about these long tracks that makes it a bit cumbersome to listen to. I'd rather have them all separated.

I agree. The tracks could have been separated but kept the listening experience the same?

NP: Prometheus - Marc Streitenfeld / Harry Gregson-Williams

I quite like what I am hearing so far. Definitely not in the same league as what's gone before with the Alien franchise - though I think that Scott isn't seeing this as part of that franchise.

Has overtones of Goldenthal and (to a lesser extent) Frizzell's Alien universe. I need to have a good listen to this to really get to grips with what's been composed for this film.

[EDIT] - And, I forgot to mention that there is a big Goldsmith quote from Alien in there somewhere.

Looking forward to seeing the film...

  8. Jerry Goldsmith - Rambo III

Yes, it's here finally! Great score to wrap the series. Very varied with the romantic material (Afghanistan theme) being some of the best romantic themes Jerry has ever written, so yeah. Great wrap to some of the most amazing musical trilogies to ever come from Hollywood. Glad to own them all.

NP : THE ROCK - Hans Smith Williams Etc

It's been a long time since I've listened to this and I'm afraid it still does very little for me. I know a lot of you here love it and good on ya all, it's just not for me.

    p.s. it's a CDR, I never bought the album.

"Cumbersome" is an excellent word for this. I just can't make it through it.

I love The Rock. It's one of those game changing scores. Whether you like it or not The Rock changed film music forever! I recently revisited the film as well and just as entertained as when I first saw it in 1996. The whole story is ludicrous but it's just so much fun! And the Zimmer and co. score fit the film to a tee. The opening number is one of the greatest cues Zimmer and his team has ever written.

    NP: Prometheus - Marc Streitenfeld

First listen... I just pressed play!

"whether you like it or not" I don't like it but yes, I'm well aware of that, VERY well aware! Anyway, The Rock Schmock, I'm much more interested in your views on the PROMETHEUS score which I've not heard any of yet.

Prometheus... very bleak. Lots of atmosphere... more Goldenthal in nature than Goldsmith and Horner. Gregson-Williams wrote a very noble and memorable theme. Lots of electronic and sound design. There's a choir, which is something new to the Alien saga.... at least I think it is. I can't remember. There are hints to Goldsmith's Alien theme. Streitenfeld also has his own motif, which he utilized throughout the score as well and is featured right off the top of the album.

Well, you have me intrigued, I'm not surprised to hear there is electronic and sound design, I'm sure it'll work well in the film which is THE film I want to see this year more than any other.

I'm 16 tracks in (about 40 minutes) and I already want to turn Prometheus off. It's not bad it's just there is zero variation. Same bleak sound design, choir, lower growling strings, a few Goldsnethalesque action cues... oh hum. I have about 16 minutes left but I'm not sure how much more of this I can take.

Man, does Streitenfeld have a huge hard-on for Goldenthal's Alien3. Wow! "Hello Mommy" is pretty much "Bait and Chase."

Wait a minute... there's Jerry's theme. "Friend from the Past." Neat arrangement.

I'll let this play out so see if there are any more surprises or just more of the same.

I thought that, although it's quite faithful to Jerry's theme, the arrangement used here strips away a lot of the power the original.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Ennio Morricone

The emphasis is very much on the first of the three.
