    Known to everyone only as the composer of the marvelous Pan's Labyrinth.
    But I'm creating a thread for him because I just finished my first listen of his score to a foreign film I know nothing about (though it appears to be some sort of strange fantasy) called His Majesty Minor, and its stunningly, strangely pleasant. The whole score is carried by an upbeat, almost jig-like theme that's taken through many variations, mostly on woodwinds. I'm rarely as surprised and impressed by a first listen as I was with this one?

    So...anyone else heard it?

    Yep, I heard Sa Majesté Minor a while ago. It's a French fantasyfilm from the director of Seven Years in Tibet and Enemy at the Gates. At first I was stunned and pleasantly surprised... then indifferent... then annoyed. To me, it's a marvelous and fun score, but I don't really listen to it as a whole that often. The final panflute track, Satyre, is incredible, though! You can even hear the performer trip over the notes biggrin

    El Laberinto del Fauno is brilliant though; easily among the best scores of last year punk Hopefully we'll hear a lot more from him in the future!

    MIRRORS (2008)

    A man is head of security at a department store plagued by unexplained deaths The store is also the target of demonstrators wanting compensation for an earlier staff fire tragedy. The man becomes intrigued by a disturbed woman. She claims her sister, who died in the fire, is exacting revenge, using mirrors as a gateway back into the living world.

    The Film looks good, at least the original korean version was. And Alexandre Aja never disappoints! Oh, and Kiefer Sutherland starring punk Surprised to see Navarrete in this project though.
    Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you

    I'm interested in seeing the Inkheart film (opens Jan. 23rd in the U.S.) since I read the series. I saw the TV ads the other day and was reminded to search for the score.

    I recently heard Fireflies in the Garden, and I can tell you it's really, very good! It's soft and quiet, yet also thoughtful and dreamlike in its intimacy, and if you're into that, it's a definite recommendation!

    Since I'm really impressed with what I'm hearing of Javier Navarrete recently, I ordered his earlier work Naufragos online, since it's easily available here and I know it's out of print and rare in the rest of the world, so I knew I had to act quick. However, I haven't heard a thing of it! (except that I read somewhere it's "somber and quiet but rich with texture" and "imploring the use of several less-popular instruments to great effect", which sounds good).

    So, does anyone know anything about it? :P

    Honestly, I've only heard Mirrors and that didn't really do anything for me. I need to check out Pan's Labyrinth.

    Pan's Labyrinth is nothing like Mirrors. It's lyrical, wholly melodic and very sentimental. The lullaby especially is one of the most heartfelt compositions in the genre during the last 10 years or so.

    CRACKS

    CRACKS is the dazzling debut film from director Jordan Scott (daughter of legendary director Ridley Scott), starring Eva Green as the mesmerizing Miss G, a liberating force in a staid but idyllic British boarding school. The story follows a clique of six girls whose dynamic is thrown off kilter by the arrival of Fiamma, a beautiful new Spanish student. The hazy summer days by the lake provide the perfect setting for Fiamma’s wild and intriguing tales of her travels in India with her father. Miss G is captivated but it's not long before ripples appear on the surface and the cracks beneath emerge in the relationship between teacher and pupil.

    Interesting. I didn't even know Scott's daughter was a budding filmmaker. It should be interesting to see if her style is inspired by her father in some way.

    CRACKS is beautiful. It lags a bit in the first half as presented on CD, but after that it unleashes its beauty with sentimental piano-led pieces and orchestral graces that have nothing to envy from PAN'S LABYRINTH.

    Any views?

    According to the IMDB, Navarrete's next film is The Warrior's Way, an action-fantasy film written and directed by Sngmoo Lee. Rogue Pictures will release it Stateside on December 3rd.

    The film looks pretty, but that's about it. But a nice change of pace from Navarrete's previous drama and fantasy films.

    WAIT A MINUTE.

    Just saw the trailer on Apple for FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN, a film that mainly interests me because of the haunting and quite brilliant score by Spanish composer Javier Navarrete. And although the DVD has been in the sales bin of stores for over a few year now here in the Netherlands, it's finally being released in the states.

    HOWEVER, after a horrendous sappy trailer with sappy music which sells the film in a way I thought doesn't depict the mood of the film itself AT ALL, based upon what I know of the music, the trailer ends with credits to a certain Jane Cornish as the "composer". Also, IMDb now lists him as being the composer of the 'international version'.

    Now, WHAT HAPPENED HERE? Did Navarrete just got one of his most brilliant scores replaced for a States release, to make it less 'arty' and more 'corny'? It all feels like a completely different film than the intimate, non-sappy one I had in my head when listening to the score. Anyone with more information on this?

    It only worked when they replaced Bruno Coulai's score for Harisson's Flowers with a much better one from Cliff Eidelman.
