  1. NP: Maleficent (2014) - James Newton Howard

Using this running order, Jay provided over at JWFan:
    http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?s … try1012176

However I canceled the song and moved the suite to the end.

Seriously though; the score, esp. in the movie, isn't even half as bad as some of you people make it to be.

I did the same. Why the suite was put at the beginning is just baffling.

This is a 5-Star score if ever I've listened to one. Intoxicating!

It is nice. Doesn't last long with time I think, in contrast to the gorgeous Snowwhite.

Overall it's much MUCH better than Snow White. But Maleficant rarely comes close to a cue like Sactuary, in my not-so-humble opinion.
  4. I don't know, if it's much better than SNOW WHITE which I rate a 4-Star score. I'm really thilled by MALIFECENT. In some passaged I have that STAR WARS feeling in my guts. I did not experiance that in a long while.

In what aspects would you say it's much better than Snowwhite? I found Snowwhite's main theme and general thematic integrity and the whole score's unity the best he's done for several years.

Indeed. I was just about to point it out.

    It's MALEFICENT, dammit!

M-a-l-e-f-i-c-e-n-t (just to make sure I spelt that right) has a far more "traditional" feel to it than Snow White, and is perhaps a little more, dare I say, coherent (meaning you don't have to wade through cue after cue to find the highlights, it's a more satisfying listen on the whole). Not that "traditional" automatically means it better, but compared to some of the more generic 'RC'isms' of Snow White, I think it wins. But like I said, I think Snow White wins for having the best themes.

If Maleficent used Snow White's themes, I would happily give it 5 stars.

Battle Beyond The Stars James Horner

This would be my favourite 80s Horner score along side Wrath of Khan, if only it had a slightly better recording (had it been performed by the LSO for example). The less-than-stellar (pun intended) performance does have a certain charm, but I would love to hear a full-blooded rerecording.

Yes, I like this more than the famed Krull.

Snow White went in one ear and out the other for me. I'd forgotten it while it was still playing. Perhaps I should give it another go.

Southall's Film Music Playlist - various composers; compiled by James Southall (male, 36, GSOH)

It has been a week of painting the nursery for the impending Jr Southall (under the close supervision of my father in law, since I'm utterly useless at everything like that) and I prepared a bit of a film music playlist to shuffle through while doing it (fortunately he likes film music too). I just added all the tracks on my iPod that I really like. It ended up being over 24 hours long. (For the record, three of the tracks - totally eleven minutes - are by James Newton Howard.)

    NP: MIRACLE APPLES (Joe Hisaishi)

Never heard of the film. Looks weird from the cover. But Hisaishi's music is typically lovely and wistful. He's done far better than this, though.

Hisaishi... one of those composers everyone raves about but he's never quite done it for me, for some reason. I really want to like him as much as everyone else seems to and keep meaning to go through the albums of his that I have one more time.

Most of it had that effect on me, but 'Snow White', 'Sanctuary' and 'White Hart' are great tracks. The rest I can do without.

I'm the same, actually. There's something....I don't know..."happy-go-lucky" about his melodic material that I don't connect to very well. But I've enjoyed quite a few of his scores, mostly Miyazaki stuff.

I gueeeeess. But I rather like having the highlight of the album to look forward to at the end, much the same as with the Last Airbender suite.

Would you only have two? I just realised there are actually four - from Maleficent (obviously), Dinosaur, Lady in the Water and Wyatt Earp.

Yeah, add to that a surprisingly-entertaining-once-you-get-over-how-modern-it-sounds action cue "Warriors on the Beach" (and take away the last two minutes of "White Hart") and you've got a great 15-minute suite that I enjoy more than pretty much anything in Maleficent. However, Maleficent is a more consistent listen and has stronger, more "classical" orchestrations. I think they complement each other quite nicely, actually.

Again, some good tracks, some a bit boring. But Trapanese is always worth looking out for. I love his general ideology of incorporating lovely synthpop elements into his scores.
