By the way, as much as I'd have liked to hear a Jerry Goldsmith bond score ( so the legend/fact goes he was wanted for The Spy Who Loved Me ) the only composer I'd have really loved to have had a crack at a Bond score back in the day is Henry Mancini.

    Just finished my review.

One of the year's best scores for one of the year's very best films. Relentless, dark, downright brutal, yes. Not an easy listen at all. But I seriously appreciate the atmosphere and the functionality in the picture, a masterpiece in creating almost unbearable tension.

I really like this score and am looking forward to seeing the film on Monday.

You're right concerning Serra but Kamen and Newman wrote some blistering cues. And Kamen did some scintillating variations of the Bond theme. As for Newman, how can ANYONE not love "The Bloody Shot." Give your head a shake, man.

It's a fine track but other than the Bond theme reference it could be slotted into any action score ( Matrix and Bourne come to mind ), the only shaking of my head is how generic it is.

As for Kamen's score there are enjoyable moments but none of his own compositions stand out as Bond music.

Far from the Madding Crowd - Craig Armstrong

Gorgeous score that reaches dizzying heights with that magical opening cue. Nothing else that follows is quite as good, however it's a very classy effort overall.

Generic and whimsical? Sure, but surprisingly enjoyable.
    I am extremely serious.

Just got a Spotify notification that the new Varese Back to the Future III album is up so I took a listen. Lots of fun, this score. The train cues are especially very exciting.

NP: The Forbiddance - Yuri Poteyenko
Quite a bit more restrained than the rollicking fun of Fort Ross, this score is introspective, dark and moody and at times quite melancholy.

Nevertheless there are quite a few absolutely lovely cues here, interestingly offering quite a strong Schindler's List kind of vibe (probably due to the prominent highly lyrical violins). The Way To The Island is a particularly lovely track.

"The Bloody Shot" would stick out like a sore thumb in any of those Bourne movies.

There are elements in Skyfall that only could have been written by Newman. It helps that several of the tracks sound like outtakes from Lemony Snicket, WALL-E, and The Debt.

    NP: EVEREST - Dario Marianelli

Having watched the movie now, it does work quite well and there are some lovely moments but it doesn't really go anywhere. Not much development. Same on album.

What does Bond music sound like?
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

If it doesn't sound like John Barry then it's not James Bond music.

    A Time of Destiny - E Morricone

A lovely, noble theme in many variations, all beautiful. And some pretty hardcore dissonant suspense.
  5. NP: Dead Within - Joshua Bradford & Clayton Worbeck

I like it as an ambient piece as a stand-alone listen. But, it doesn't really give the feel of a horror score.

  6. NP: Puppet Master 4: The Demon - Richard Band

A pretty poor listen this one. Tinny synths carry the score and it all sounds very cheap - which I am sure it was back in 1993. There's a piano melody that is a shining light though, but it doesn't last long.

A home-made album of most of the pieces Kubrick chose for his film. Only an approximation of the actual OST, but it's enough to give a sense of the feel of the film.

I sampled it earlier. It sounds pretty stately, like Wlliams' score for Lincoln.

I loved the music for this long before I even heard of Bartok or Penderecki.

The series itself has evolved, not only the music. Arnold started out as a Barry-sound-alike but then developed very much his own tone as the franchise moved on. His "Casino Royal" is among my favourite scores of the series.

Yes, Bond has evolved, it won't be long before he's a tree-hugger.

Arnold did not start out as a Barry sound-alike but he did channel that Barryesque feel in all of his Bond scores and it is that DNA that makes Bond, Bond.

Odd description given that Craig's Bond is the least tree-hugging one of the lot. He'd win in a fight with all the previous Bonds, no question. Bourne is his only worthy rival.
