    NP: MADE IN FRANCE (Rob)

I wasn't aware that Rob had a new score out (I'm totally in love with his MANIAC)! This quickly rocketed up to one of my top 3 favourites of the year so far.
    I am extremely serious.

You're too young to appreciate it! wink

(I'm 38, so my five "extra years" on you gives me the necessary 80s connection!).

Maybe I am too old but I just found it an amalgam of all things annoying from that style.

    Guess it's a love-hate thing.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. DRIVE - Cliff Martinez and other artists

There's at least two songs on the CD that made me buy the CD. The Martinez soundscapes aren't exactly my thing but they're strangely soothing when my mood wants to be soothed (which does not happen that often, because most of the time I want melodies, rhythm, singing, or some kick-ass guitar solo's). The songs that truly set my world on fire are 1. Nightcall and 3. A Real Hero. I love them because they have a sort of 80's vibe to them, but very much modern in sound. So I set my playlist to start at track 4 and play it all the way through and starting again from the beginning, thus ending with my favorite tracks. It's the only way to get some sort of satisfaction out of this otherwise very dull album.

This is just a hunch and provided nothing happens to me, I'll probably be listening to Drive in 7.5 years and perchance I may even appreciate the Martinez portion by then. But this is all speculation and it could turn out to be even longer than 7.5 years. It all depends on what will happen to me in between now and the end of 2023, which may very well be a lot. Just a random thought. smile

By the way, I have now reached the end of CD, so now the good but short part begins. cool

Who knows? certainly when one was born and when did they grow up surely plays a part, but i truly can't connect with the 80's. I mostly and generally - with very few exceptions, find it one of modern humanity's most wacko periods wink

Ash vs. Evil Dead - Joseph LoDuca

Ridiculously good fun. Starts off in orchestral frenzy mode before a couple of great Mexican themes. Then the rock kit comes out before a return to some brilliant frenzied action.

C'mon you just say wacko because the 80's makes you think of the king of pop... Right ???? wink

A superb album really; can't think of many more perfect fusions of an orchestra and jazz.

I don't know, everything. The awful hair, the terrible clothes, all that color-porn everywhere etc etc. Only in the rock and heavy metal musical area and some classic movies that the ear gave us, yes, there we had strong highlights and classics. But people, their looks, their habits, not for me wink

No comment on hair and fashion, but the 80s is -- alongside the 70s -- my favourite decade in music, ever. I'm not necessarily talking about the factory-produced stuff like Stock, Aitken and Waterman (although it has a certain nostalgic value), but the more sophisticated stuff -- like the art pop or prog rock things by Supertramp, 10CC, Alan Parsons, Pink Floyd etc. or the high class electropop like a-ha, Yazoo, Depeche Mode etc.

And of course some of my favourite scores are in this decade, whether electronic or symphonic.

Since the decade contains my entire childhood (I was 13 in 1990), I obviously feel very connected to it -- more, I think, than those who are a few years younger or older.
    I am extremely serious.

There was so much damned good music in the 80's, for me a lot of this wasn't in the mainstream ( jazz, funk, electronica etc ) and film scores were, arguably, at an all time peak. I completely agree that the "fashions" left an awful lot to be desired.

I might have to have a think about my top 20 non-score albums of the 80's wink

Thor, Steven, Lee, Martijn, Alan etc etc I'd love to hear of your favourite 80's albums ( doesn't have to be 20 if you can't stretch that far which will only show that you haven't listened to enough to form any valid opinion on 80's music tongue wink )

Me too, with ease. Still, Volker's put up a thread for this, I'll add there.

NP : NIXON - John Williams

Brilliant, the best of his presidential trilogy IMO.

The rerecording or the original? I'd be interested to hear your 'virgin listen' opinion on a score I think is one of the greatest ever written.

Listening to the Philharmonia Orchestra re-recording. Crystal clear!
I love the color of the orchestrations throughout. Great movement. Boisterous gestures. It's great!
