  1. New from Saimel Records:

Saimel Ediciones add to their catalogue a new title composed by Nino Rota never previously released: THE RELUCTANT SAINT. Available Now.

With an international cast of actors lead by Maximilian Schell –fresh from the Academy Award he had received for his role in Stanley Kramer’s wartime drama Judgment at Nuremberg– and with supporting actors like Ricardo Montalban, Akim Tamiroff and Lea Padovani, The Reluctant Saint was released in 1962. Produced and directed by Edward Dmytryk, is the story of the 17th century Franciscan friar Giuseppe da Copertino, who is honored as a Christian mystic and saint by the Catholic church and who was known for his ecstatic visions and miraculous levitations.
Although most Rota scores from the 60s have in the meantime become available either on LP or
on CD, the truly delightful music he composed for The Reluctant Saint till now has always been neglected so that we are especially proud to present the complete film score (Track 1 – 18) including even some bonus and alternate tracks (Track 19 – 31) for the very first time on this CD, with lines notes of Stefan Schlegel.

  3. Christmas is early this year:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new world premiere release for one of the most beloved and classic films of all time:

    IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE

Music Composed and Conducted by Dimitri Tiomkin

“STRANGE, ISN’T IT? EACH MAN’S LIFE TOUCHES SO MANY OTHER LIVES. WHEN HE ISN’T AROUND HE LEAVES AN AWFUL HOLE, DOESN’T HE?”

It is surprising to think that one of the most beloved movies of all time was a box-office disappointment during its original engagement. But, over the years, It’s a Wonderful Life found its audience – a huge and enduring audience ¬– and became one of the most beloved works in all of cinema. It’s a Wonderful Life is now seen as the classic it always was, revered by people all over the world, a staple at Christmas, and a movie people watch over and over again without ever tiring of its simple and beautiful message: how our lives touch others’ lives in profound and wonderful ways. It is one of director Frank Capra’s crowning achievements in a career filled with them.

Despite its somewhat less-than-stellar performance at the box-office, the film garnered some excellent reviews and was nominated for five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Recording. It won none of those but earned a Technical Achievement Award for Russell Shearman and the RKO Special Effects department (for its use of simulated falling snow). But in the end awards didn’t matter, for while it took a bit of time to happen, Wonderful Life entered the public consciousness and has never left it.

Dimitri Tiomkin wrote a wonderful score for Wonderful Life, interweaving original themes and quotes of popular music to great effect. But, as sometimes happens, Capra made lots of changes in the editing room. He cut several cues (letting those scenes play without music) and rearranged where certain cues appeared; he removed sections of cues, and even tracked in music written for other films. But the score as written is exquisite—as heartfelt and moving as the film. And even though the way in which it’s used in the movie works beautifully, hearing it complete (including unused cues) is a special treat. It is filled with Tiomkin’s wonderful sense of film and character and drama.

This is, surprisingly, the world premiere release of the original tracks for Tiomkin’s score. Tiomkin had a set of acetates for the film, some of which were in good condition and some of which weren’t. They were filled with partial takes, aborted takes and full takes. Through careful editing, we were able to piece together everything that was provided to us and Chris Malone, our restoration expert, did a breathtakingly great job on it. Once before he saved for Kritzerland a score many thought could never be released – A Place in the Sun – and his work here is even more astonishing, resulting in close to fifty minutes of pure Tiomkin heaven. While a handful of cues are still a little problematic in terms of acetate noise, the majority of them have been cleaned up without sacrificing any musical or recording qualities and are quite stunning to hear. We have also included several interesting bonus tracks.

And so, at long last, here are the wonderful original score tracks to It’s a Wonderful Life.

It’s a Wonderful Life is limited to 1200 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the last week of July, but we’ve been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

  4. It's funny but the OST has very recently been released digitally. It would be interesting to hear if there is any different in how each version sounds.

I'm also curious to know if the release of both these versions - there doesn't seem to be any connection with Kritzerland and the digital label - are related.

    EDIT:
That should make it a June 24 title.

    And...

A user at the Intrada forum asked if there are any Horner titles in the pipeline, to which a vague but answered reply from Roger was given: "Yeah"

    http://www1.screenarchives.com/title_de … LOW-VIPER/

FBI OPERAZIONE VIPERA GIALLA (FBI OPERATION YELLOW VIPER; Francesco de Masi) is as Euro Spy movie directed in 1966 by Alfredo Medori and starring Hellmut Lange, Adeline Wagner and Peer Schmidt. The story follows an FBI agent who’s up against a dangerous criminal gang that takes its name from the yellow viper's deadly poison which they use for their lethal poison-tipped arrows.
It's a title of great interest to Beat Records since it’s completely unreleased and was composed in one of the most creative periods of Maestro de Masi's career (during which he composed some of the most beautiful Spy-Jazz scores ever, including Troppo per vivere… poco per morire, Colpo maestro al servizio di Sua Maestà Britannica, FBI operazione Pakistan, Le spie uccidono in silenzio, Agente Z55 missione disperata, Sinfonia per due spie, etc.).
For this excellently-orchestrated and emotionally-expressive score, the Maestro availed himself of the best soloists (as usual) which he conducted with his typical mastery.

The CD is presented in a jewel case with a 12-page booklet designed by Alessio Iannuzzi, mastering by Claudio Fuiano and liner notes (in Italian and English) by Filippo de Masi. A stylish and classy score...surely 24-karat!

    http://www1.screenarchives.com/title_de … EXY-SUSAN/

I DOLCI VIZI DELLA CASTA SUSANNA (THE SWEET SINS OF SEXY SUSAN) belongs to a genre that can only be called “decamerotic.” The Italian-Austrian-Hungarian co-production was directed in 1967 by Franz Antel and starred Teri Tordai, Mike Marshall and Pascal Petit.
The most memorable aspect of this humorous comedy with blushing cheeks is surely the beautiful score by the late Maestro Gianni Ferrio. Cheerful, lively and baroque-flavored sounds explode in unchained shakes and beat cues that will make fans of the genre, the maestro and film music in general go crazy.
Thanks to the discovery of the original master tapes, preserved in a wonderful stereo, it was possible to prepare a CD lasting more than 70 minutes that outclasses the quality and quantity of the original LP program. An expanded edition of a beautiful score in a presentation that truly does it justice!

The CD is presented in a jewel case with a 12-page booklet illustrated by Alessio Iannuzzi, mastering by Claudio Fuiano and liner notes (in Italian and English) by Fabio Babini.

    http://www1.screenarchives.com/title_de … CIOTTENNE/

VITA SEGRETA DI UNA DICIOTTENN (THE EYES) gives us an opportunity to bring to light another great score by the eclectic Italian composer Gianni Marchetti, a fine musician with profound artistic vision.
In an ongoing effort to rediscover his work for cinema, we’ve dedicated a lot of releases to the Maestro in the past few years, including MILANO: IL CLAN DEI CALABRESI, LE NOTTI PORNO NEL MONDO N. 2, IL SOLE NELLA PELLE, NIPOTI MIEI DILETTI and CICCIOLINA AMORE MIO. Creating unforgettable sounds of great symphonic depth—sometimes in the fashion of the period, others infused with great lyricism—he is an artist surely destined to be remembered and celebrated through productions dedicated to his genius, such as this little gem.
VITA SEGRETA DI UNA DICIOTTENNE, a drama with morbid, sexy veins, presented the ideal conditions for the inventive Maestro to display his talents, and he doesn’t delude our expectations. It’s a diverse and vibrant score with amazing twists and turns that continue to surprise us throughout the listening experience. Pleasantly unsuspected!

The CD is presented in a jewel case with a 12-page booklet designed by Alessio Iannuzzi, mastering by Claudio Fuiano and liner notes (in Italian and English) by Fabio Babini.

    http://www1.screenarchives.com/title_de … IN-SUMMER/

LA MAFIA UCCIDE SOLO D’ESTATE (THE MAFIA ONLY KILLS IN SUMMER) was directed and written by Pierfrancesco Diliberto, who also played a starring role alongside Cristiana Capotondi, Claudio Gioè and Antonio Bruschetta. It’s the story of a young journalist, Alberto, coming of age in the period of the mafia massacres that exploded with particular ferocity from the ‘80s up to 1992.
The movie deals with the subject in an original way that is at once sarcastic, incisive and touching. With poignant narration and direction, Dilberto’s surprising debut earns great success, garnering various nominations and awards.
Santi Pulvirenti composed a chilling score that brilliantly channels the emotional charge of the images on screen and that, among the other things, features a beautiful end title song in Sicilian dialect, the cherry on the cake of a fine production.
Born in Catania, Sicily, Pulvirenti has collaborated with important artists in both the national (Carmen Consoli, Tiro Mancino, Max Gazzè) and international music scenes (Patti Smith, Angèlique Kidjo), and having formerly collaborated with Paolo Buonvino, he’s no newcomer to composing for cinema.

    http://www1.screenarchives.com/title_de … -THE-WIND/

COME IL VENTO (LIKE THE WIND) was directed in 2013 by Marco Puccioni and starred Valeria Golino, Filippo Timi and Francesco Scianna. It’s inspired by the story of Armida Miserere, a controversial figure in Italy recent history. Among the first women to direct a prison, she committed suicide in Sulmona on April 19, 2003, after enduring 13 years of anguish and loneliness following the murder of her man Umberto Mornile by the Camorra, and underground Italian crime syndicate.
Shigeru Umebayashi, a Japanese composer with great artistic qualities (and the favorite of director Wong Kar-Wai), was enlisted to write the score. Given his masterful ability to transcribe emotions into sound, it wasn’t by sheer chance that he was added to the movie’s creative cast. Subtle and fine in his execution, no one but he could have illustrated this deep and complex story so adequately through music.

A score of great emotional impact, it’s surely among the highlights of an important movie that earned many awards and great praise from critics and audiences alike.

LES PASSAGERS / THE INTRUDER (1977)
Original Music Composed and Conducted by Claude Bolling
Including The Unused Music Composed and Conducted by Éric Demarsan

Limited Edition of 500 copies. First time on CD.
70 minutes of music never released before.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Gilles Loison.

    Ref: MBR-051
    Release Date: July 8, 2014

Adapted from a novel by Dean Koontz (who wrote under the name K.R. Dwyer), Les Passagers / The Intruder (1977) depicts a breathless pursuit taking place between Italy and France starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mireille Darc and Bernard Fresson.

Music Box Records presents for the first time ever on CD two unreleased scores written for Serge Leroy's Les Passagers that of Claude Bolling which came to replace the music originally composed by Éric Demarsan. Though this phenomenon of replacing scores is common in the United States, it is rarer in Europe. The music that is unused is not necessarily of poor quality, but simply does not correspond to the expectations of a given director or producer. Indeed, instead of asking the musician to revisit his work, the person in charge of the film prefers to solicit a fresh eye. In France, for example, well-known is the case of Jean-Pierre Melville rejecting the music of Michel Legrand for Le Cercle rouge, this latter being replaced by… Éric Demarsan.

Regarding Les Passagers, Éric Demarsan composed his music around the child, an essential character in the story, and of his relationship with his new father “pretty hip to his style.” Piano, glockenspiel, vibraphone and xylophone combine to infuse a melancholic and mysterious lightness right before the opening titles. The second strong theme of the film, that of the menace represented by the black van, is more dissonant based on brass and woodwinds, with touches of piano and xylophone.
With Claude Bolling, the main theme of the film became a jazz lullaby on piano to a nonchalant tempo, supplemented by simple bass and guitar, then relayed to a dynamic string ensemble underlying the cheerful and tranquil stretches of their trip. By contrast, the scenes of suspense generated by the chase with the van are represented by oppressive string movements and saxophone.

Music Box Records, in collaboration with Warner Chappell Music France, Claude Bolling and Éric Demarsan, presents both scores for the first time on CD and transferred from the original master tapes. The limited edition of 500 units comes with an 8-page booklet with French and English commentary by Gilles Loison.

LE TÉMOIN / IL TESTIMONE (1978)
Music Composed and Conducted by Piero Piccioni

    Limited Edition of 500 copies.
First time on CD. 45 minutes of music. Remastered edition supervised by Claudio Fuiano.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Nicolas Magenham.

    Ref: MBR-052
    Release Date: July 8, 2014

In 1978, Jean-Pierre Mocky directed Le Témoin, one of his most daring movies of his career. The film’s subject touches on the question of abolition of the death penalty, a burning topic during the end of the 1970s in France. The film tells the story of Robert Maurisson (Philippe Noiret), a banker and industrialist from Reims who brings his friend Antonio (Alberto Sordi) to restore the frescoe paintings in that city’s famous cathedral. Antonio’s model is a little girl who is later found strangled. The author of the crime is Maurisson, but little by little the suspicion falls on Antonio who will be finally condemned to death.

Le Témoin can be seen as a number of references to Italian comedy, principally through the character played by Sordi. The actor personifies the perfect petit-bourgeois type commonly found in Rome, simultaneously a whinge and a lech. But he will be finally deemed to have suffered a miscarriage of justice.
The director made his choice on Italian composer Piero Piccioni who worked almost exclusively for the cinema, writing original soundtracks for a very large number of films in which Alberto Sordi featured. He composed a very light score which accentuates the ambiguity of the film. This new remastered edition presents the two catchy main themes, originally issued on 45 RPM single by General Music France and their variations, which perfectly match for comic scenes and create unease in the darkest scenes.

The first theme (Le Témoin) appears principally in the form of a Gloria performed by a children’s choir accompanied by a church organ and mixes at times a rhythmic disco/pop with a religious choral, that is both joyous and somewhat sacrilegious, so typical of the spirit of Mocky himself. Some variations are simply performed on piano by the composer himself. The second theme (Le Faux Pas) perfectly personifies Antonio thanks to his Italianness and his naive cheerfulness sides. Piccioni shows his talent of orchestrator mixing brilliantly pizzicato strings, flute and sometimes a trumpet sometimes recalling Nino Rota's scores for Fellini.

The limited edition of 500 units, supervised and mastered by Claudio Fuiano, comes with an 8-page booklet with French and English commentary by Nicolas Magenham.

There will be at least 7 or 8 CDs in this box, if not more.

Jam packed with fantastic heroic themes, action packed, heart pounding tunes and sultry, sexy film noir cop thriller music circa 1978, Mr. Newborn’s diversified score is right up there with AIRPLANE! and TOP SECRET as some of the best music this genre has ever offered. While only some of the first 2 films scores were previously released, the third film in the series is making its world debut in this set! Also featured in this collection are songs from the various films, including “I’m Into Something Good,” “I Guess I’m Just Screwed,” the Academy Award’s show-stopping number “This Could Be the Start of Something” performed by Pia Zadora, and, arguably the greatest rendition of “The Star Spangle Banner” ever sung, performed by the great Enrico Pallazzo (a never-before-heard prerecorded performance)!

Naked Gun and it’s sequel, 2 ½, have been completely remastered and expanded greatly. Mike Matessino had the opportunity to go back and remix the first film’s score to its original glory! The 36 page booklet features extensive liner notes by Daniel Schweiger that take you behind the scenes of the funny films and their magnificent scores. Composer Ira Newborn and the magical film making team of ZAZ (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker) also lend some insight into these comedy classics. Dan Goldwasser’s art direction bring the zaniness altogether in one attractive looking package.

This 3 cd set goes on sale next week July 15, 2014 at 12 pm pst. This is our only new release for this week.

PLEASE NOTE: We MIGHT have a limited amount of signed copies autographed by Ira Newborn available at the time of the release. There is a 50/50 chance of us having them, though, there's only a 10 percent chance of that.

Keep watching our facebook page for updates.

  17. Big sale going on over at Quartet Records:

This month is very special for us because it has been five years since we started a new label dedicated to film music. In other words, we are celebrating our 5th anniversary!

Since then, we have released 155 albums and believe that with them we have achieved our goal: to create a niche label with eclectic taste where new and old films—some very-well known and some pretty obscure—can co-exist, representing composers and films of all nationalities, all produced with the same commitment and serious dedication.

Throughout these five years we have earned the confidence of several composers, studios and companies around the world, establishing excellent relationships with them and making it possible to continue our work of releasing their scores. We would like to thank MGM, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal, Studio Canal, Lionsgate, Gruppo Sugar, Beat Records, GDM, EMI General Music, Cinevox, Pathé, Gaumont, Hori Prod, Mercury Films, Telecinco Cinema, Apaches Entertainment, El Deseo, UMG, Capitol Records and Sony Music (not to mention some new companies with whom we will begin working in the future) for the opportunity to collaborate with them.

The list of titles in our pipeline for the remainder of 2014 and 2015 is, we think, impressive. Some will be reissues and some will be expansions of previous albums, but most of them will be world premiere releases. So, rest assured, Quartet Records will be here! Our number of releases will continue to be between three and five CDs each month—typically two releases every two weeks. And if you want to know about them, please regularly check the "Upcoming Releases" button on our website and our Facebook page. We will be much more forthcoming from now on, giving specific information and dates with fewer clues and games.

Obviously, we did not do this work alone. There are many great professionals who have been and are involved in every project, and they have helped us advance to where we are today. We want to give special thanks to all the record producers that have worked with us (Claudio Fuiano, Lukas Kendall, Stéphane Lerouge, Nick Redman, James Fitzpatrick), writers (Frank K. DeWald, John Takis, Daniel Schweiger, Randall D. Larson, Tim Greiving, Andy Dursin, Jeff Bond, Bruce Kimmel, Gergely Hubai, Miguel A. Barroso, Roberto Cueto, Óscar Salas), sound and transfer engineers (José Luis Crespo, José Vinader, Marc Blanes, J.M. Rosillo, Raúl Ros, Quique Roldán, Daniel Hersch, Johnny Dee Davis, Doug Johnson, Dániel Winkler, Enrico De Gemini, Christophe Henault, Jean Pierre Chalbos), our designer Nacho B. Govantes for our wonderful packaging, and all the retailers and distributors—both physical and digital—that sell our albums worldwide. And of course, we can’t forget the most important component of our success: our loyal customers.

Therefore, to celebrate our 5th anniversary, during the next two weeks we are offering a 35% DISCOUNT on all our products. Simply place your order online and 35% of your overall price will be automatically deducted at checkout. Temporality out of stock titles are not included in the offer.

In addition, with the purchase of 6 CDs or more, we will add FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING—with a registered track number!

Please be aware that for many titles we have only very limited quantities (for some, less than 10 copies!). And our licenses for some titles expire in September and they will be unavailable for purchase after the summer is over.

Sale starts right now at www.quartetrecords.com and runs through 7/27.

Thank you all very much—and long live film music!

  20. New from Buysoundtrax release; I cleaned up the announcement a little bit:

    WARRIORS OF VIRTUE
    By: Don Davis

Starts Shipping the week of July 21,2014

    http://buysoundtrax.stores.yahoo.net/rejuorsobych.html

BUYSOUNDTRAX Records will be releasing the soundtrack for WARRIORS OF VIRTUE, featuring music composed by Don Davis (BOUND, The MATRIX trilogy, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, JURASSIC PARK III) for the 1997 fantasy film directed by Ronny Yu (THE BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR), written by Michael Vickerman, Hugh Kelley and the Law brothers, starring Mario Yedidia, Marley Shelton, Chao Li Chi, Dale Wilson, Kathleen Barr, Doug Parker, Scott McNeil, Doug Jones, Lee Arenberg, Dennis Dun and Angus MacFadyen as Komodo.

WARRIORS OF VIRTUE tells the story of Ryan Jeffers (Yedidia), a disabled middle school student who spends most of his time reading comic books and imagining other worlds where he might have great adventures. One day, he stops at his favorite Chinese restaurant and visits with Ming (Dun), the owner. Ming gives Ryan a manuscript of Tao, which is a representation of the five elements that make up the Tao mythology. Ming suggests that Ryan should read the manuscript and it might lead to his ‘true enlightenment’. During school, Ryan is the waterboy for the football team. One afternoon, Ryan is caught staring at the quarterback’s girlfriend and the team starts picking on Ryan and his friend, Chucky. After the girl stands up for Ryan, the quarterback invites Ryan and Chucky to a water treatment plant for an initiation ritual that involves them going across a flimsy pipe to graffiti their names on a wall. Ignoring Chucky’s warnings and feeling ashamed about his disability, Ryan tries to go across the pipe but is blasted into a water tank.

Awakening in the land of Tao, Ryan discovers his disability is gone and he has the use of his legs. Shortly thereafter, he is attacked by soldiers and in the process of escaping, he loses his backpack, which contains the Tao manuscript. Ryan encounters the dwarf-like Mudlap who brings him to Elysia (Shelton), a beautiful girl in white robes. Elysia takes him to Master Chung (Chi). Master Chung leads the Warriors Of Virtue, five anthropomorphic kangaroos who wield the power of the elements. The Warriors are in search of the Manuscript of Legend. They are opposed by the evil warlord Komodo (MacFadyen), who leads an army that has been terrorizing the Land of Tao while Komodo is on a quest to destroy all the lifesprings, the sources of balance and harmony in Tao. Ryan learns that Ming’s gift is in actuality the Manuscript Of Legend and the secrets contained within its pages will decide the outcome in the battle between the forces of good and evil. With the Manuscript now in Komodo’s hands, Ryan must unite the Warriors Of Virtue and recover the Manuscript so that he can decipher its secrets and save Tao.

Released in 1997, WARRIORS OF VIRTUE is a fantasy film filled with lofty ambitions that failed to find its audience. The film is the product of four wealthy brothers, transplanted from Hong Kong to settle in Colorado, the Law brothers. Surgeons by trade but with a creative and financial interest in cinema, they decided to make a Hollywood blockbuster. The brothers invested $35 million of their combined fortunes into developing and producing the film, a science fiction fantasy best described as a variation on THE WIZARD OF OZ meets KUNG-FU PANDA with a pouch-full of STAR WARS’ Force-full mysticism added for good measure. The brothers went on to personally finance another $20 million in marketing costs, with an eye on lucrative toy and other merchandise tie-ins. When the Law brothers were finished shooting the film, they were convinced their film deserved a fully orchestral, swashbuckling score to bring life to the world of Tao and assist its journey to acclaim and fortune. The brothers hoped to hire John Williams to score the film but his agent referred them to another composer by the name of Don Davis. He began work on scoring the film in 1995, two years prior to the film’s release. The producers told him they wanted a broad symphonic score, with a separate theme for each of the five Warriors and as one of the brothers was involved with the Colorado Opera Company, he wanted to commission a piece of concert music that involved these five themes, representing the virtues in the manner of an oratorio. This oratorio, called ‘Of The Illuminated’, received its premiere at the Breckenridge Music Festival in the summer of 1995. This unique (and lengthy) affiliation with the project allowed the composer to be a part of the creative team from the beginning of the project. The WARRIORS OF VIRTUE score was recorded with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and mixed by Armin Steiner.

Emmy winning composer Don Davis began playing trumpet and piano at the age of nine, and started writing music at twelve. As his affinity for music grew, so did his aspirations, and soon he was composing and arranging orchestral charts for local jazz ensembles that he also performed with. After graduation from high school, Davis furthered his study of music at UCLA, majoring in music theory and composition, playing trumpet in college jazz ensembles and orchestras. After graduation from UCLA, Davis continued to study composition with Henri Lazarof and orchestration under Albert Harris. Harris introduced the young Davis to film and television composer Joe Harnell, best known for his work on TV shows such as V and THE INCREDIBLE HULK. He was immediately impressed by Davis' attention to orchestral detail, especially as evidenced by a chamber symphony Davis was writing at the time. Harnell became a mentor to Davis and introduced him to the professional world of film and television scoring. His early compositional work caught the attention of composer Lee Holdridge, who had penned the theme music for the television series BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and he helped Davis land the job composing weekly scores for the show. Davis' rich orchestral style meshed perfectly with the tone of the show and he went on to win an Emmy for his work and achieve great acclaim as one of television's most gifted young composers.

After BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Davis found his career as a composer soaring and he was commissioned to compose scores for dozens of top television movies and series, including SEAQUEST DSV, HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, Peter Benchley’s THE BEAST, TINY TOON ADVENTURES and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In 1997, Davis composed the score for Larry and Andy Wachowski's off-beat thriller BOUND, and the directing brothers immediately formed a close working relationship with Davis. The Wachowskis and Davis again collaborated on the MATRIX Trilogy. Davis' work for the three scores incorporated elements of popular music, electronic synthesizer effects, and even a touch of the avant-garde. His full length three act opera "Río de Sangre" premiered in October, 2010 at the Florentine Opera Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The full production included 10 principals with a 40 voice choir and an 11-piece stage ensemble, accompanied by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra conducted by Joseph Rescigno.

WARRIORS OF VIRTUE was first released on compact disc by Kid Rhino with a short presentation of the score and nine songs at the time of the film’s release and later released again in a better presentation by Prometheus Records minus the songs and with more of Don Davis’ score restored. Buysoundtrax Records now presents a new release of WARRIORS OF VIRTUE, with liner notes written by author Randall Larson including new comments from the composer, along with new mastering by James Nelson of Digital Outland, allowing a new audience to discover Don Davis’ wonderful score.

  22. New from Digitmovies (posted a few days ago, but I missed it):

    Galileo (Ennio Morricone)

Digitmovies is pleased to release the original soundtrack by Ennio Morricone for the movie “Galileo.” (complete edition CD, full stereo,30:43min)

    Soundtrack information:

The eerie and mysterious atmosphere typical of Morricone’s style of music is based on careful study and research of earlier music while keeping avant-garde music styles in mind. The author’s experimental side emerges powerfully with dissonant horn sections accompanied by a choir (Tr.4). This alternates between chants and the hymn “Eresia defunta sia” with the words of the director Cavani (Tr. 2) set to delicate music that varies between romantic and mysterious (Tr. 5). For this CD we used every note recorded on the stereo master tapes of the recording session. We discovered six previously unreleased tracks approved by the composer himself. The result is a polished tribute to the great musical art of Ennio Morricone and the cinema of Liliana Cavani.

    Movie synopsis:

Directed in 1968 by Liliana Cavani, Galilei is the story of Galileo Galilei, the Italian physicist who played an important role in the scientific revolution.

    Story:

Galileo Galilei (Cusack) is working at the University of Padova as a physics teacher. In the meantime, the ideas of Giordano Bruno (Kaloiancev) and Copernico’s principles on the solar system start to become known and take hold. One day, Galileo receives a rudimentary Holland binocular. He perfects it to the point of being able to see the movement of the stars. Through extensive studies, he begins to understand that the Sun is at the centre of the solar system instead of the Earth. He is called to Rome to explain himself and demonstrate his research. Cardinal Bellarmino (Doicev) and the Pope himself (Vida) ask him to postpone his research because the claims it makes border on heresy. However he continues his research and even publishes a book. This brings a denunciation that leads to Galileo’s arrest and seizure of his works. The scientist is subjected to a series of interrogations before the Inquisition tribunal. Due to fear of torture he signs a solemn recantation of his claims.

    Starring:

Cyril Cusack, Gheorghi Kaloiancev, Giulio Brogi, Nevena Kokanova, Maia Dragomanska, Miroslav Mindov, Mila Dimitrova, Paolo Graziosi, Lou Castel, Gheorghi Cerkelov, Piero Vida, Gigi Ballista, Claudio Cassinelli, Nikolaj Doicev, Sergio Fincato, Vittorio Duse, Dante Cleri, Jean Rougel, Marcello Turilli, Giampiero Frondini, Antonio Nediani.
