  1. A hint at something to come, and one thing being worked on, over at the Intrada forum:

    RM Eastman:

The next trick from Doug's hat will be the superb Polydor Rozsa series?

    Roger Feigelson:

Those ones are a little tricky but I am trying. However, in the meantime we have what you might look at as a volume 4 in that series coming!
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  2. An update today from Quartet Records, after some people in a thread (at FSM) about [b]Jerry Fielding[p/b] and wether there will be any titles from him in 2014:

We have two Fielding titles in the pipeline planned for 2014: one previously unreleased score in any form, and one expanded re-release.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  3. Two updates from LLLR's:

A set of "Enterprise" scores, should be out around the summer.

And after some folks wondered about "Liar" (the video game score), that a few years ago they said they were working on, MV said, "Patience".

  5. The next Kritzerland release is a three-fer by Victor Young.

So far only two of the titles have been guessed:

    "The Accused"
    "September Affair"
(this one is about 22 minutes of score, according to Kimmel)

  6. Johnny Guitar?
I have a stone old VS CD that was probably mastered from a worn acetat. Great score nontheless.

    Volker
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  7. Quantities update from LLLR's:

LOW STOCK ALERT: Less than 400 units remain of BLACK RAIN and less than 450 units remain of HOOK. Once they are gone, our Limited Edition run of these titles will be completely sold out!

  8. From Quartet's Facebook page, thanks to an FSM member who saw it:

To celebrate the Georges Delerue anniversary, we are pleased to announce the upcoming release of his lovely, surprising score for the 1982 Paramount movie PARTNERS.

Although the film only included about 12 minutes of Delerue music, the album includes the complete unused score by the French maestro, more than 50 minutes of original music in stunning stereo sound.

Available for order early next week at www.quartetrecords.com

And some updates from LLLR's, again thanks to another FSM member:

  9. New from Music Box Records:

    SHE-DEVIL (1989)
Music Composed and Conducted by Howard Shore

    Limited Edition of 1000 copies.
World premiere CD release. 42 minutes of music never released before.
8-page CD booklet with liner notes by Gergely Hubai.

    Ref: MBR-046
    Release Date: March 18, 2014

Music Box Records presents the original soundtrack from She-Devil by Howard Shore. Based on the novel The Life and Loves of a She-Devil by British author Fay Weldon, Susan Seidelman’s adaptation of the book tells the story of frumpy housewife Ruth (Roseanne Barr) who thinks she got it made with her handsome accountant husband, Bob (Ed Begley Jr.). When Bob meets bestselling romance novelist Mary Fisher (Meryl Streep), the couple quickly separates but the trauma unleashes great powers within Ruth. Once bored and lonesome, Ruth reinvents herself, gets a job, then starts her own enterprise in order to carry out an elaborate revenge against Bob…

Written by Howard Shore (composer of The Lord of the Rings and most of David Cronenberg’s films), the music for She-Devil is a brilliantly energetic score balancing between deliberately overblown romance and devilishly clever cues underscoring Ruth’s sudden urge for creative destruction. The key idea of the score is transformation as we can hear two sides of the most important musical ideas – one for Mary and one for Ruth. There’s also a rich tapestry of musical allusions, ranging from the evergreen song Strangers in the Night (the theme for Bob and Mary) to colorful references from Russian classical music, including Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain and The Gnome.

While there was a previous soundtrack release of She-Devil, it was a “songs from and inspired by“ type of compilation that featured nothing from Shore’s brilliant contributions to the film. Music Box Records corrects this omission by releasing all 42 minutes of the underscore, transferred from the original 24-track master tapes, with several reprises of the great romance theme, Ruth’s chilling vengeance music and a couple of other surprises for the attentive listener. The 8-page booklet features liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film and the score, plus includes quotes from Howard Shore on how he remembers the project.

    L'ÉTAT SAUVAGE (1978) • LE GRAND FRÈRE (1982)
    Music Composed by Pierre Jansen

    Limited Edition of 500 copies.
First time on CD. More than 65 minutes of music.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Laurent Perret.

    Ref: MBR-045
    Release Date: March 18, 2014

After releasing on CD René la Canne, Le Bon Plaisir and Descente aux Enfers, Music Box Records explores a new chapter in the career of Francis Girod, releasing the two original motion picture soundtracks composed by Pierre Jansen for this director. L’État Sauvage / The Savage State (1978), adapted from the novel of the same name by Georges Conchon (winner of the 1964 Prix Goncourt) deals with the initial period after decolonization of a fictional African state, centring on the tormented and chaotic destinies of five main characters. Le Grand Frère / The Big Brother (1982), a revamp set in Africa and Marseille of Sam Ross’s novel Ready for the Tiger (translated as part of the Série Noire collection), allows, through the conduit of a seedy story of revenge, for the head on tackling of a number of social problems, not least among which features the integration of the first generation of French of North African descent.

Pierre Jansen recalls his two exigent collaborations with Francis Girod:
“L’État Sauvage deliberately avoided any musical reference to Africa as it was my intent to avoid at all costs producing an illustrated postcard in sound. To resurrect the harsh savagery of racism – and even of the types of racism denounced in the film to the point where the viewer is led to wonder who it is exactly who is the savage! – I opted for a Westernized, jerkily rhythmic and dissonant score, which can be heard right from the main title, which is particularly jarring.”
“For Le Grand Frère, I let myself be inspired by the general climate of the film and I also wrote in a highly rigorous manner, image by image, out of which came a result approaching a more traditional type of film music. One can distinguish two principal streams running through what I contributed: on the one hand the symphonic tracks intended to enhance the dramatics of the screenplay and the psychology of the protagonists with impressionistic touches in places and on the other hand I created the majority of the source music myself.”

Music Box Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar and EMI Music Publishing, presents both scores for the first time on CD and transferred from the original stereo master tapes. The limited edition of 500 copies comes with an 8-page booklet with French and English commentary by Laurent Perret and an interview with Pierre Jansen.

  10. In a new Q&A with Don Peake, he has revealed Volumes 1, 2, and 3 of "Knight Rider", will be re-issued, but not on Hitchcock Media Records, but rather now Perserverance Records.

As well as Volumes 4, 5, 6, and 7 on the label, too.

He also says, unfortunately, at this time the studio cannot locate the music for the episode "Goliath", so that's on hold.

  12. Multiples new releases from Beat Records:

We continue our classic CR (Collector Releases) series with this first-ever release of Carlo Savina's score for the Western movie I TRE DEL COLORADO (1965, CANDADIAN WILDERNESS), directed by Amando de Ossorio and starring George Martin, Diana Lorys, Luis Martin and Santiago Rivero. The Italo-Western genre had just exploded, but some productions were still inspired by the Hollywood canon. For this production, we find ourselves on that trail with a distinctly spectacular film that tells a story involving Indians and kidnappings.

The score composed by M° Savina, a fine musician who has given so much to Italian cinema of the 20th century, is in line with the description above, exemplifying a style in which strings and spacious arrangements for full orchestra predominate. Surely a great rediscovery, it confirms once again how much this marvelous artist has contributed to the Eighth Art through his wonderful music.

The 34th release in the DDJ series is dedicated to a living icon in the film music world, M° Nico Fidenco, and his score for the movie ZOMBI HOLOCAUST (1980, DR. BUTCHER M.D.), directed by Marino Girolami and starring Ian McCulloch, Alexandra Delli Colli, Sherry Buchanan, Peter O'Neil and Donald O'Brien.

ZOMBI HOLOCAUST raised the stakes of zombie and cannibal exploitation by throwing both concepts into the same movie. It was one of the goriest splatter movies of its time and required the talent of a composer, chameleonic as few others can be, capable of going from cartoon main titles to scores for soft-core movies with agility and aplomb; fear of failure is easily dismissed.

Maestro Fidenco created an astonishing score, extremely effective considering the savage images full of the hungry undead. The soundtrack is based on electronic essentialism, with rhythms sometimes restored from prior works (such as those for the Black Emanuelle series) and an incredibly dry and operative use of synthesizers with great sonic yield.

A masterpiece dedicated to the visionary genius of this talented and foresighted artist, it's a righteous release in a series that gave life to other Fidenco scores such as PORNO HOLOCAUST and which is now finally available for your unsuspecting ears.

The 7th release in the series dedicated to the great scores composed by M° Piccioni features a cinematic meeting of the great Maestro with Alberto Lattuada, director of CUORE DI CANE (1976, DOG'S HEART), starring Max Von Sydow, Eleonora Giorgi, Mario Adorf and Cochi Ponzoni.

Set in the Soviet Union of the 1920s, the movie presented a new challenge for M° Piccioni, namely how to score the vicissitudes of a character engineered in a laboratory, half man, half dog. The eclecticism of this extraordinary artist, confronted with a difficult task, is the feature that will enable him to produce an amazing score, full of Russian classicism and the experimental styles typical of the composer. A real phenomenon, over the top, providing quality proof that, we are sure, will not delude anybody, from hardcore Piccioni fans to casual film music lovers.

Plus these collaborations with partner labels:

We continue the series dedicated to TV series with the great Maestro Bruno Nicolai's score for ELEONORA (1973), a two-part miniseries directed by Silverio Blasi and starring Giulietta Masina, Giulio Brogi and Roldano Lupi. Set in the middle of the 19th century, it's the story of a young Milanese girl, her unconventional boyfriend and her difficult relationship with her father.

Symphonic, romantic, and nostalgic, Nicolai's music is, as usual, of great quality and class, featuring one of the most evocative themes ever composed by the Maestro.

L'INDUSTRIALE is a movie directed in 2011 by Giuliano Montaldo and starring Pierfrancesco Favino and Carolina Crescentini. It tells the story of Nicola (Favino), whose social life is nearly bankrupt. The same can be said about his love life. He patches things up the best way he can and everything seems to return to normal, but there are secrets in Nicola's past…

The score composed by Andrea Morricone is one of the most involving scores of recent years, perfect in sustaining the movie, which was edited with great proficiency. Elegant in timbre and musically expressive, it was written with great symphonic, nostalgic and suggestive sensibility.
Surely a CD that sustains operatic valor, it enters the canon of great orchestral soundtracks for Italian cinema.

The movie, directed in 2010 by Gian Paolo Cugno with Raul Bova and Maria Grazia Cucinotta, follows the ups and downs of two Sicilian brothers from the ‘50s through the ‘80s, dealing with emigration, controversy and terrorism in a kaleidoscope of events with Italy in the background.

The score by M° Paolo Vivaldi, varied and orchestral, offers a beautiful array of themes that were often arranged to highlight a particular instrument or group of instruments. Suggestive and rich, it's a great addition to your discography dedicated to the music of cinema!

  14. New releases for April, on Digitmovies:

"Digitmovies is pleased to publish for the first time, complete and in full stereo, the OST by Riz Ortolani for the movie “The Dead are Alive”, directed in 1972 by Armando Crispino. For the realization of this project, which was left in a drawer for years, but only now is achieved, thanks to the approval of the author, have been used stereo master tapes first generation of the original recording session in perfect condition. Riz Ortolani wrote one of the most beautiful themes of his long and successful career."

"Digitmovies continues to explore the world of Totò by publishing, for the first time, the complete OST by Armando Trovajoli, taken from the movie "Totò e Peppino Divisi a Berlino" (aka "Toto and Peppino divided in Berlin") in 1962, directed by Giorgio Bianchi. For this, lasting 38:00 minutes, we used the master tapes in the original mono recording session. Armando Trovajoli has composed and conducted a delicious OST, based on a recurring theme, which the author introduces samba time in opening credits, after with different arrangements, and alternating to military marches that well describe the atmosphere of the iron curtain in which are involved the two protagonists."

"Digitmovies is proud to be able to release a long-held dream by issuing, on a triple CD set, for the first time, complete and in full stereo the OST by Fiorenzo Carpi for the TV drama, directed in 1972 by Luigi Comencini "Le Avventure di Pinocchio" (aka "The Adventures of Pinocchio"), based on the international novel by Carlo Collodi. For the production of our triple box set (total time 200:04 minutes) we were able to access the master tapes in full stereo of the recording sessions of the time which allowed us to use every note recorded in 1972, under the direction of the fabulous orchestra conductor Bruno Nicolai (who had also handled the arrangements)."

    CONCORDE AFFAIRE '79
    Chris' Soundtrack Corner CSC 012
    Music by Stelvio Cipriani

There was a time not that long ago when the film music of Stelvio Cipriani was seriously underrepresented on CD. The past decade has seen that error wonderfully resolved, and thankfully the flood of titles continues with this latest from Chris’ Soundtrack Corner. CONCORDE AFFAIRE ’79 is a 1979 film directed by Ruggero Deodato, the controversial auteur behind the infamous body-horrors precursor to today’s torture porn, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. And just as CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST elicited a distinguished and unforgettable score from Riz Ortolani so too did the same director’s CONCORDE AFFAIRE ’79 inspire Cipriani to give the world a quite exceptional soundtrack. Although primarily monothematic the complete score – here available for the first time – demonstrates just how fruitful and versatile the melodic / motif driven approach of the late Silver Age truly was. Cipriani’s foundation premise of a frenetic chase theme for full orchestra is impressively morphed into a dizzying array of ideas – a truly rich tapestry of textures, impressions and mood are presented in the 27 tracks of this CD. As Deodato’s CONCORDE is essentially the last of the so-called disaster epics it strays from the originating principle of the genre and is a hybrid; more of an investigative thriller than disaster film. Cipriani addresses this by boldly infusing his familiar, highly melodic and adult-pop driven demeanor with synth flourishes that border on tropes more common to science fiction. Because of this the various themes and variations create a brand new sensation for the seasoned film score connoisseur. CONCORDE AFFAIRE ’79 should be considered a rare treat and an exciting and successful experiment: an attractive, glamorous orchestral score with a fluent blending of paranoia and icy, hallucinogenic fear making for a delightfully idiosyncratic lounge-style cocktail! This particular CD release will most likely remind all of us of just how flagrantly entertaining and fun film music used to be.

    A PUGNI NUDI
    Chris' Soundtrack Corner CSC 013
    Music by Franco Bixio

The German label Chris' Soundtrack Corner continues its successful crusade to openly flaunt the exceptional precociousness of Italian film scores of the 1970s with A PUGNI NUDI - a stunningly appropriate follow-up to their 2010 release of the orchestral funk masterwork VAI GORILLA. Where that hot gem showcased the collaborative magic of Bixio, Frizzi and Tempera, this latest CD allows composer and music mogul Franco Bixio to strut his considerable stuff solo. Salvaged (and expanded) from a top-rare Cinevox LP - and a practically lost 1974 film - Bixio's effort is an example of an artist finding just the right assignment and at just the right time; clearly the composer is here at the peak of his powers! Much like his peer Franco Micalzzi, Bixio was an Italian musician with an intense affinity for the sounds of modern Black American music, and as with VAI GORILLA this too is prime-cut R&B and funk, fused with jazz and voiced through the sophisticated palette of a full studio orchestra. For all lovers of high end blaxploitation film music A PUGNI NUDI is going to be a revelation. Tracks such as A Fist In The Thought, Underworld and Dog's Heart call to mind names behind the very best of the 1970s interface of Afro-American funk with the then prevalent Hollywood/big-band procedurals: Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield and even Marvin Gayes' with his legendary TROUBLE MAN. While these acutely swinging elements of the score are what Bixio used to put an overtly expressive face to the narrative, he also skillfully fleshed out the body with a series of more traditional orchestral themes in a familiar and intensely satisfying Silver Age modality. The story, rumored to be loosely based on screenwriter Enzo Pulcrano's experiences as a professional boxer, is a rich drama in the vein of classic pugilist films such as ROCKY and Bixio crafted mature, cultivated articulations of tragedy, nobility, sacrifice and finally remorse. Perhaps more importantly than anything else A PUGNI NUDI should forever shift Franco Bixio's status from being a second-tier Italian film composer to the ranks of the A-list. It's about time. The original recording of A PUGNI NUDI was scrupulously directed by Bixio's long-time partner Vince Tempera, and this digital remastering offers four previously unheard bonus cuts.

ORGASMO NERO (SEX AND BLACK MAGIC / VOODOO BABY / BLACK ORGASM)
    Chris' Soundtrack Corner CSC 014
    Music by Stelvio Cipriani

Chris' Soundtrack Corner strikes gold yet again by proudly presenting the premiere release of Stelvio Cipriani's captivating score for infamous exploitation auteur Joe D'Amato's ORGASMO NERO (SEX AND BLACK MAGIC / VOODOO BABY / BLACK ORGASM).

This CD follows neatly on the heels of the Soundtrack Corner's previous release of Cipriani's PAPAYA DEI CARAIBI. Both scores are prime examples of classic Silver Age mondo-exotica/erotica film music, a staple of 1970's Italian soundtracks, and both films are exponents of the unique adult sub-genre of Euro Cult Cinema that put focus to the escapades of beautiful young black women conquering the modern world with the sensual powers of their gender.

This artist is world renowned for gifting listeners with always accessible, enjoyable music, and for ORGASMO NERO Cipriani delivered a tasty intermingling of Bossa-based ideas. The score was carefully layered with a deep, rich ambiance and this dramatic personality is frequently enlivened by the inclusion of exotic percussion and tropical colors. Where many composers would have merely draped ORGASMO NERO with either a horror-based or erotica-based palette, Cipriani instead bothered to work-up a much more satisfying mix that seamlessly blends, morphs and contrasts sensuality, glamour and passion with vibrant primitivism and evocative suspense. All fans of melody, mood, rhythms and romance are going to love this latest from Chris' Soundtrack Corner and the always charismatic oeuvre of Maestro Stelvio Cipriani.

    L'ULTIMO CACCIATORE (THE LAST HUNTER)
    Chris' Soundtrack Corner CSC 015
    Music by Franco Micalizzi

Chris' Soundtrack Corner brings to all Retro Euro Cult film score aficionados a previously unavailable title by a still living champion of the great Italian Silver Age – Franco Micalizzi.

L'ULTIMO CACCIATORE (THE LAST HUNTER) was a 1980 production {meant to capitalize on the success of APOCOLYPSE NOW and THE DEER HUNTER} from acclaimed genre director Antonio Margheriti (WILD WILD PLANET, CASTLE OF BLOOD, THE VIRGIN OF NUREMBERG). Micalizzi brought to the project a sharp, dynamic edge predicated upon his own famous and seminal inventions for the violent Italian urban crime thrillers of the 1970's – the poliziotteschi. L'ULTIMO CACCIATORE is boldly animated by a series of uncompromising themes in the idioms of funk, jazz and R&B.

Micalizzi also uses his full orchestra to supply two dramatic song-forms, one of which, "Shining Shadow", serves as the memorable end titles ballad while the second piece is a delightfully sexy, sleazy exercise in soulful fusion. Fleshing out this comprehensive CD (every note of the score is included) are numerous and highly addictive elements: synth-based suspense cues, instrumental lounge and pop source cues, and expansive, explosive action set-pieces such as one would expect from a blood-soaked Vietnam era war film.

Currently, and for the past several years, Maestro Micalizzi has been having great success touring Italy with his Big Bubbling Band as he conducts sold-out live performances of his 70's film music. L'ULTIMO CACCIATORE is a perfect example of why these concert venues are doing so well – Micalizzi wrote scores that exist to do one thing above all else: give pleasure!

  16. Chris Soundtrack Corner is my domestic vendor of choice here in Germany. I get almost all score CDs there that I don't get through amazon. CSC do a couple of releases by themseves each year and it seems that is an activity they want to expand. It's mostly Italian scores and some obscure German ones.

  21. New from KeepMoving Records:

KeepMoving Records presents two new CDs by Eckart Seeber

KeepMoving Records proudly presents two new CDs by composer Eckart Seeber. Our first release is To the Ends of Time which marks the directorial debut of former Hollywood prop master Markus Rothkranz, the film tells the story of a mystical kingdom where an evil witch takes over the control of time. Generations fade away within days and when a young lad is suddenly forced to grow up, he takes it upon himself to break the curse. Starring Tom Schultz, Christine Taylor, Joss Ackland and Sarah Douglas, To the Ends of Time is memorable for its nostalgic fantasy setting that involves giant castles, flying ships and trained animals – all achieved through practical visual effects as opposed to CGI.

Our second release is Shadowbuilder which marks the directorial debut of special FX specialist James Dixon, Shadowbuilder takes its name from a Bram Stoker short-story about a mysterious creature who served as the key inspiration for this film. Following in the footsteps of a gun-toting priest played by Michael Rooker, the story takes place in a small Canadian town where the impending solar eclipse awakens a malevolent being unleashed by a mysterious cult. Shadowbuilder feasts on the soul of the innocent and with a few minutes of total darkness coming within a matter of days, his reign may begin…

A bit of background about the composer: Eckart Seeber was born in the Austrian town of Innsbruck in 1963. He studied at the State Conservatory of Music in his home town, receiving a BA degree from the Simon Fraser University and MA degree from the University of Victoria. His teachers in composition and orchestration include such renowned names as Rudolph Komorous and Dr. John Celona. Seeber made the most out of his European heritage by building up on these traditions in his own music as well. Citing composers like Rimski-Korsakov and Igor Stravinsky as his main influences, Seeber’s most critically revered score for Shadowbuilder was voted the 8th best score of Film Score Monthly in 1998.

Both scores have been previously issued by Seeber’s own Sonovide label as promotional items, but these new releases by KeepMoving Records contain the complete scores with about 20 minutes of previously unreleased music on each disc (not to mention the superior sound, mastered by Doug Schwartz and mixed by Peter Fuchs). Both CDs come in a handsome packaging with 12-page booklet featuring liner notes by Gergely Hubai, discussing the creation of the films and the scores based on interviews with the directors and the composer.

  22. An update from LLLR's on various things:

OK is doing great. Maybe 300 left.

We had at least one Tiomkin ready to come out this spring but we hit a snag. Its working itself out slowly between the studio and the the other rights holder (ancient contracts). We hope to have it out this summer. We do have a couple of great classic tv shows we are currently working on. Later this year we hope to have out one incredible release that has been in the works for quite some time.

In 2015 we will be exploring the WB catalog further with some wonderful golden age scores.

Kritzerland pretty much has the monopoly on Golden Age scores from Fox and Paramount (the two fastest studios to work with regarding approvals) and they are doing a pretty good job on releasing those gems.

Intrada is doing a wonderful job exploring the Disney and Universal catalogs.

Our release schedule is constantly in flux so you never know what might be coming out.

  23. New releases from Quartet:

Quartet Records is proud to present its three new releases…

    SUMMIT
    Music Composed by Mario Nascimbene
    World Premire Release
    Limited Edition of 500 units

Quartet Records presents the premiere release of the tuneful score by Mario Nascimbene (La ragazza con la valigia, The Vikings, Solomon and Sheba, I Mongoli) for an obscure French/Italian co-production.

Written and directed by former journalist Giorgio Bontempi, Summit was a 1968 film starring Gian Maria Volonté and Mireille Darc as star-crossed lovers caught up in the spirit of 1968 revolutions. Although they are supposedly finished with each other, the exciting atmosphere and the exotic trans-continental trip ignites the old flame with erotically-charged consequences... The film wasn't particularly successful in its original release, but when both main actors became actual stars a few years later, Summit was re-released as One Body, One Night and was advertized as an erotic film.

The score by Mario Nascimbene is quite atypical of the composer who is best-known for his more experimental scores, Biblical and historical epics or his Hammer scores for caveman adventures. Summit is in fact a very tuneful, spy jazz flavored scores with two major recurring themes and a bilingual theme song performed by Jula De Palma. These songs were originally issued on 45 RPM singles by Parade, but most fans got to hear them on the compilations like “Women in Lounge” or “The Best of the Italian Film Music”. Although the French versions of the songs became quite well-known among collectors, Nascimbene’s score hasn’t been released – until now.

Quartet Records is proud to present the CD premiere of this score which contains the usual assortment of bonuses, including a very special extra: a demo recording of the alternate main theme with lyricist Duilio Del Prete performing a politically-charged theme song for the film. Mastered by Claudio Fuiano from the first generation stereo master tapes, the richly-illustrated, 12-page booklet features liner notes by Gergely Hubai, who discuss the film, the composer and the score alongside many beautiful stills.

    NEL NOME DEL PADRE
    Music Composed by Nicola Piovani
Complete Edition, first time from the original master tapes
    Limited Edition of 500 units

Expanded CD release of the religiously-charged score by Nicola Piovani (La notte di San Lorenzo, Fellini’s Intervista, Caro Diario, La vita é bella) for the film by Marco Bellocchio.

Marco Bellocchio's Nel nome del Padre is among the director's most controversial works which is quite a statement considering his filmography. The film tells the story of Angelo Transeunti, a mean-spirited boy who had just been sent to a strict religious boarding school. Using his personal charisma in gaining leadership of the boys, Angelo starts a chaotic reign in the institution with no regards of whom or what he may hurt in the process...

The film marked the first collaboration between Bellocchio and composer Nicola Piovani who worked with the director on many other films like Sbatti il mostro in prima pagina (1972), Il gabbiano (1977) or Marcia trionfale (1976) - also released by Quartet Records.- Piovani's score for Nel nome del Padre tries to be as delightfully sacrilegious as the film itself, featuring Baroque and Classical tunes laid out against the horrific scenes of Angelo's rampage, not to mention the haunting choral and organ passages for the religious setting.

The score was previously issued on LP and the same program received its CD premiere in 1996 by Point Records. Quartet Records presents the complete program of the score, mastered by Claudio Fuiano from the first generation stereo master tapes, featuring new cues and alternate takes of music that was already featured on the original soundtrack, though in an abbreviated form. The 8-page booklet featured liner notes by Gergely Hubai.

    CHE FARE?
    Music Composed by Luis Bacalov
    World Premiere Release
    Limited Edition of 500 units

World premiere release of the enchanting television score by Luis Bacalov (Summertime Killer, Il Grande Duello, Il Postino), one of the composers few ventures into the medium.

Directed by Gianni Serra, Che fare? is a five-part Italian mini-series based on the influential utopistic novel by Russian author Nikolay Chernyshevsky. Listed as one of Lenin's own personal favorites, “What Is to Be Done?” told the story of Vera Pavlovna, an enlightened woman who sets out to marry an unlikely suitor just to realize that happiness can be found with another man as well... In the meantime she sets up her own business and associates herself with a number of weird characters, all preserved in the television adaptation as well.

The score by Bacalov is one of the composers few entries in the medium of television. Characterized by an immensely catchy theme tune (often performed by a small choir as well), the music of Che fare? is as spunky and loveable as the main heroine. Covering Vera's whole life from her early missteps to her establishment of her business, the main program of this CD presents many wonderful variations on her theme, not to mention the three of four secondary melodies with a few alternate takes of their own.

Quartet Records is proud to present the complete, premiere release of this long-forgotten masterpiece by Luis Bacalov. Only the first two tracks have been previously issued on a very rare 45 RPM single, released by General Music. This CD premiere, mastered by Claudio Fuiano from the original session tapes recorded in mono (the series was recorded in mono) contains all the music available from the five episodes - the liner notes in the 8-page booklet by Gergely Hubai will guide you through the program and get you familiarized with a score that should be much better known in the first place!

  26. Three new releases from the Kronos Records/MovieScore Media line:

THE DARK SIDE OF LIGHT (EL LADO OSCURO DE LA LUZ)
    Music by GUS REYES
    MMS14007/KRONCD040

Powerful psychological thriller based on the true story of a serial killer who was sentenced to an electric chair execution and survived it. This criminal justifies his murderers in the belief he’s a God’s chosen that has fulfilled a liberation mission of his victims. Using a symbolic language, this story exposes “Actions that prove killing in God’s name is an excuse to cover atrocious crimes”.

Guys Reyes' music is a very insightful journey through Memo's state of mind. It is sad, dark and obscure, but sad above anything else. The composer choses the Harp and the Piano in this case to create an Ostinato that portrays the movement of the main character's thoughts in his voyage of becoming a religious serial killer. Sacred music has been a great inspiration and it culminates in the Requiem. A very sensible and emotional score and a name to remember, Gus Reyes.

    REAL HUMANS (ÄKTA MÄNNISKOR)
    Music by RIKARD BORGGÅRD
    MMS14003/KRONCD041

Critically acclaimed Swedish sci-fi TV series Real Humans (Äkta människor) just completed its second season in Sweden. A big success in France (under the title Real Humans: 100% Humain) and sold to over 50 countries, the intelligent series about a society where hubots (humanoid robots) are a part of everyday life, features a highly stylish electronica-driven score by Rikard Borggård.

Contrasting elements of bleak, electronic colors and low-fi, organic experimentalism with warm – perhaps real human? – themes for piano, the music is an important part of the series’ strikingly original style. MovieScore Media’s digital album will be followed by a MSM/Kronos CD release in March.

    ANNE & ALET
    Music by MARK R. CANDASAMY
    MMS13020/KRONCD042

In 2013, MovieScore Media released a score from a Nordic documentary feature, Tale of a Forest by Finnish composer Panu Aaltio, which subsequently won the ‘Best Documentary Score’ International Film Music Critics Award.

Our contribution to the race for the title this year comes from another Nordic composer, Mark R. Candasamy from Norway. His orchestral music for Anne & Alet, a theatrical documentary feature about the infamous poisonings carried out by two sisters in Øyestad in the 18th century, is an exercise in emotionally charged but extremely elegant and romantic orchestral writing where the composer’s knack for interesting harmony goes beyond what you’d expect from a period piece. The orchestrations are exquisite (the strings are very richly textured) and the themes highly engaging, and the dramatic highlights are scored with great maturity. As a bonus, the album features a concert setting based on the film score.

  27. The next Kritzerland release will be a three-fer, containing:

    "The Hustle" (Paul Glass)
    "Overlord" (Paul Glass)
    and "The Disappearance" (Robert Farnon)

    Some information:
"While there are moment of dissonance in Overlord, mostly it's tonal in the Vaughn Williams style - stunningly beautiful themes - if you've heard the score to Bunny Lake you know how good a melodist Glass can be. The other Glass score is also mostly tonal and it's really kind of fun.

And best of all and rather astonishingly, Overlord is in glorious stereophonic sound. At one point we thought we were going to have to go from the up and down mono tape we had - but thankfully Paul had a complete set of tapes - and we got them transferred just in time, they literally were falling apart after we did the transfer - it's in perfect sound. Gorgeous"

It appears the Craig Huxley rescore of "The Disappearance" will not be included.

  28. An important update on the Intrada message board, for those of you who may not have seen it:

A couple of changes because the mail room is still swamped from our last releases and I need to show some mercy. We're moving The Rescue to the 29th to be with the Muppets double header. Gets us back to our two every two weeks and won't overload the system. I know you guys get impatient when orders get backed up (and for those that refrain from sending an email asking where you order is, we greatly appreciate it!).
