    Steven - and all interested,

You should never start lifting weights on your own, without the advice of a professional trainer FIRST. Even if you warm up, the largest possibility is that you'll perform the exercise incorrectly and thus placing more and more "man" weights on wrong amounts and on wrong analogy / wrong places of your body resulting to either nerves twisting or muscle screw up. Now that you've already past that it seems, GO VISIT A FRIGGIN DOCTOR ASAP and do as little movements as necessary 'till then; man, i really hate it when people play with their health, do you really need someone to tell you to STOP EVERYTHING AND VISIT A DOCTOR when under chronic pain?

Steven. I'll be at your hose in about 2 hours to take you to the doctor.

If we could take your car that would be great. If you could pay for my taxi that would be better. And paying for my crossing of the atlantic would make you the coolest dude on earth. I hope you have health insurance, and I'm bringing some advil with me just for you. wink

Do you have any cubans that you could help me smuggle into the states? slant
If you did that would be a major bonus for the trip...
If you feel obliged to pay me any extra I'll leave that up to you. smile

You'll thank me later for taking you to the doctor. cool

As some of you know I don't drive nearly as much as I use to. Last night I did drive and gave a friend a ride somewhere. My first mistake was to comment that I felt it was a moron move for the city of San Diego to close up 7 libraries. Of course he agreed with the cost cutting move 100% and proceeded to tell me how well run our city is. I should have kept quiet as what should I expect from an ex marine but I didn't. Big mistake.

Very good points, correct technique is very important.

I've taught many friends about weight lifting and nutrition.....unfortunately I learnt all my mistakes in my youth the hard way.

When did you feel your back go Steven, was it immediate or something else, Was it very heavy weights, did you warm up properly?

All of the above. I was in a lot of pain this morning! slant

20KG weights is pushing it I think, 15KG should be enough... I fear there's going to be a lecture.

What excercise were you performing? In fact, could you give me a rundown of your training regime?

I have one dumbbell at 20kg which I do 30 for each arm while I place my other arm on a wall so it doesn't strain my back (clearly it's working). Then 30 press ups and 30 sit ups. It's not a particularly hardcore workout, but it's definitely made a difference since I started doing them about a year ago (with much lighter weights). I'm only really interested in building muscle rather than toning it for fitness sake. You know, pure vanity.

I try to do that twice a day, but not always do I get a chance (aka laziness).

I would like to know the excercises more specifically.

Are you using the one dumbbell to do curls, shoulder press, lateral raises etc??? I see problems already.

    1. 10 individual 20kg curls on each arm
    2. 10 press ups
    3. 10 sit ups
    4. 10 individual 20kg curls on each arm
    5. 10 press ups
    6. 10 sit ups
    7. 10 individual 20kg curls on each arm
    8. 10 press ups
    9. 10 sit ups

What do suggest would be a more suitable weight?

I wish I could be there with you to be more 'hands on'.

There's nothing wrong with the weight you use ( most people, i.e. untrained, would find curling 20kg on one arm difficult if not impossible ) but I'd love to see your technique, I could show you progressive ways with 10kg that would be very efficient which involves super strict style using very s-l-o-w repetitions.

To me press ups are nothing more than part of warming up ( unless you can get progressively bigger children to sit on your back wink ), to get eye popping arms you need to use weight resistance for the triceps and shoulders plus forearm work, though to be honest nothing beats a balanced full body workout.

And Steven, get another dumbbell, training with just the one is, IMO, what caused you're back problem.

Interested in why you think so, Tim?

Incidentally (just to emphasise and not as any reflection on Tim's expertise which is most humbling and envy-inducing): GET THEE TO A PHYSICIAN IN THE MORN.
Whether or not you change your technique now, already some damage has occured, and you DON'T want complications.
Your back is one area you DON'T want to take risks with.

I did, and now I'm chronically herniated, which will never, ever go away. sad

Absolutely! no more weight lifting till you take this advice Steven.

As for the 'one' dumbbell thang, using one side of the body puts a lot of unecessary stress on the other, most of the time we use both arms to lift a heavy object though I do know of one person who put his back out at the airport lifting a heavy suitcase. Two dumbbells will create balance.

p.s. from what I see Steven doesn't seem to be doing any warm up routine, with press ups and sit ups as part of his workout it's not balanced at all.

The simple answer would be to say 'join a gym', for insurance purposes all gyms have an induction course before you are allowed to go it alone.

No warm up, too many repetitions, not the correct technique; the errors everyone can easily do and which will easily result to disaster.

Steven is doing nothing wrong on repetitions, higher reps and lesser weight for definition, lower reps and heavier weight for muscle mass.

Also we don't know that Steven isn't using correct technique? As I said, I'd like to actually be able to see what he's doing.

My gym never did, though I wish they did. Technique is definitely the most important thing. I was lucky enough to work out with friends they gave me great advice on technique.

    Go to the doctor mate!

    I hear ya.
I joined a gym that's (seemingly) run by temping students. There is an induction course, but it wasn't very re-assuring, especially when I saw the looks of badly disguised panic when I mentioned my hernia and asked what kind of excercises I should avoid or do. slant
I'm just taking it really easy, reading a lot about it an trying things out...but I'm sure I'd get a lot better a lot sooner with some professional help.

Exercise annoys the hell out of me. Why can't we be perfectly healthy by just sitting around and watching TV? sad

I really feel for you on that score Martijn, I know more ( except the odd up-date ) than any gym instructor who's had to teach me ( I'm kindly patient and let the 20 something get on with his / her job....no one likes a smart arse wink ) but I honestly wouldn't know how to work with your problem?

And yeah, serious professional help costs! slant

Last month I found out I was apparently using the wrong technique for push ups because it was exerting rather too much pressure on my spine. So I immediately stopped it and will wait till I consult an expert about how to do it. I don't really get time for weight lifting either so currently I'm only jogging around a nearby park for an hour, doing some basic fitness exercises and sit ups (we were taught in school). I'll look into weight lifting and others after I get into college smile

Exercise is good of course. But I hate it too. I'm very lazy.
I always hope that travelling with public transport, by bike and by foot, some cleaning in the house (excellent physical exercise by the way) and other physical stuff is enough. Alltogether that should be the daily 30 minutes?

The only thing I can force myself to do is yoga. It's very relaxing as well.
And to get really tired and do some 'cardio' whatever, I'd prefer dancing over sports by far!
As long as it involves some music, makes it much easier.
