Kudos to everyone involved with this final part. The female narrator did a great job with the presentation. It was something of a departure from the big booming voice of Erik. tongue

Learned some details I didn't know about Horner personally and his scores, and even though the period which followed The Perfect Storm isn't my favorite of the man, he had the gift to touch my heart right up until his final projects, most notably with For Greater Glory.

    Great program dude ! punk

  5. Kunzel's albums were a significant guideline when I started to dive into film music. I rank his anthology with that of Charles Gerhardt. So I'm definitely going to listen to this program.

    Volker
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  6. Halve through the show I find myself marvelling at the utter quality of these recordings. I have most of the here featured albums in my own collection. The carefully assembled playlist and Erik's commentary makes it a fun ride.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

Recording quality did dip in the end, especially on one of your favourite releases, Tom, THREE CHORAL SUITES. I didn't include any music from any of the albums where I deemed the recording quality to be diminished!

Beautiful Hollywood and Chiller sound great, IMO. It's was in 2000 when the albums started to sound muddy and distant. Scary Music and Three Choral Suites don't sound like the rest of the early catalogue. And they got worse as time went on with Masters & Commanders and Vintage Cinema being the worst sounding Kunzel albums. Flat and lifeless.

But as you said, the rest of the collection, especially those 80's and early to mid 90's recordings - THE GREAT FANTASY ADVENTURE ALBUM being the best of the best - are essential for any serious film music fan and audiophile.

  7. I also think that Beautiful Hollywood (or respectively The Fantasy Dream Album) sounds great. It's one of my personal favourites.

    Volker
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  8. Yeah it's mostly personal preference about the tracks used on the albums. I find Beautiful Hollywood a bit too 'soft' overall, I like some of the interpretations, others less. About Chiller, sounds great definitely with Night on Bald Mountain a highlight, but not too many tracks of that caliber on there.

But still 2 fine albums which I like to listen to once in a while, just not as often as the rest. I will always go for the more 'adventurous' of the bunch. cool

What I've always liked with Kunzel re-recordings... it wasn't always the overture, or the main theme that is on so many compilations already. He often arranged cues that were just part of the score, but not a center piece. Like with Star Trek III or Last Crusade.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  9. I meant Star Trek V (A Busy Man) in stead of Star Trek III. wink

THE ARCHIVE WITH JASON DRURY: EPISODE TWO

    http://www.cinematicsound.net/the-archi … isode-two/

Welcome to episode two of THE ARCHIVE WITH JASON DRURY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO.

This episode features an exclusive suite of music from Tadlow Records' brand new recording of BEN-HUR by Miklos Rozsa.

BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES turns 25 years old this month and to commemorate that momentous occasion you'll hear selections from the various scores composed by Shirley Walker.

Jason takes a trip back to 1983 and plays for you selections from John Barry's score to HIGH ROAD CHINA.

Composer Roy Budd was born on March 14, 1947. Sadly and suddenly, he passed away at the age of 46 from a brain hemorrhage on August 7th, 1993. Jason celebrates Budd's 70th anniversary with music from FEAR IS THE KEY and his final score for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

Back in 2009 Intrada Records released Jerry Goldsmith score to ONE LITTLE INDIAN by Jerry Goldsmith. You'll hear a suite from that score which was initially released in 1973.

Afterwards, Jason treats you with music from David Arnold's forgotten classic to LAST OF THE DOGMEN and then rounds off the program with a flourish with music from Tadlow Records' re-recording of TARAS BULBA by Franz Waxman.
