  1. The film critics, although I do hesitate to call an ex-AICN reporter than, do love Desplat. From a review of NEW MOON:

    Ultimately, the film commits the biggest sin any film can commit: it's boring. It's poorly structured, there's little or no tension to the film's "drama," and even the big moments like Bella racing to Italy to stop Edward's suicide or Graham Greene facing a vampire attack in the woods only to be saved by a werewolf are so poorly staged and so oddly cut that there is no energy to any of them. Javier Aguirresarobe's work as cinematographer is okay, but considering what a cultural phenomenon this series is, there are no iconic images, nothing that visually defines the "Twilight" series. Aguirresarobe has shot films like "The Sea Inside" and "Vicky Christina Barcelona," and he's definitely a guy with a great, elegant visual signature, but this film underutilizes him almost as criminally as it misuses the fantastic Alexandre Desplat. Again... there's nothing about his score that seems to brand the "Twilight" series. Walking away from the film, the audience will remember the non-stop barrage of pop songs, but they'll be hard-pressed to identify a note of the score, and considering it's Desplat, that seems positively negligent.

    Most of interest to me there is that the film features Graham Greene. Perhaps it's not as vacuous as I had thought. It will be interesting to hear Desplat's take on Greene - no doubt some noble English horn passage, perhaps some slightly liturgical hint of his catholicism or some ethnic element to represent his travels. Yes, this film has definitely gone up in my estimation.

    I totally disagree with Desplat's opinion on Tarantino, but he's got every right to say it.
    I am extremely serious.
  3. I think he does have a point about arthouse filmmakers wanting sole authorship. If they use the music of another person, it's with their own intent, and that's a lot of things, including a show of respect, but it isn't a collaboration. They don't seem to be interested in collaboration, it's their own intent that interests them. It does seem to happen once a filmmaker has a certain credibility, they go out in search of film composers less (Kubrick, Bergman, Tarkovsky, etc).

    Unfortunately i was teaching one of my classes at that time and the date couldn't be changed for nothing...damn damn damn, indeed. But if he was playing, live, in a concert or something, i admit i'd try harder. wink

    I agree, and so does he actually. He starts off by saying that directors are free to do what they want. The whole business about some directors not being collaborative is his speculation as to why Tarantino isn't interested in collaborating in producing original music. It's the introductory paragraph which interprets this perfectly valid opinion as an artistic bitchslap, which makes it seem more provocative than it is.
    I mean, the guy's working with Terence Malick of all people at the moment. I'm sure he's made his peace with the fact that some directors draw from many different pools.

    I did see New Moon last night (only for the score). Again, I'll reiterate that Desplat did a lot of heavy lifting because his score did transform the movie from a hilarious B-movie soap into something close to entertaining. The score is indeed lush and it got to the point where I said to myself, "That's it. I'm buying this score."

    Those who didn't like Desplat's Golden Compass will probably like it, while those who did like GC will like it too. It has that quiet delicacy of his earlier scores (a beautiful piano solo in one area) but also has some of the best characteristics of GC.

    Having been very active lately, with scores for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Fantastic Mr.Fox, Julie & Julia, L'armée du crime, Un prophète, Coco avant Chanel and Chéri, all in just one year, 2009, his music - always graceful, delicate, elegant and deeply melodic, evokes sentiments and feelings from musical eras past.

    Having recently visited the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece in a honorary reception that was given for his excellence in the genre, Desplat's future looks bold and written in big letters, and very deserving.

    The more i am listening to the NEW MOON, the more i feel in love with it. Seriously, the slower, emotional material he wrote for this film is beautiful. Some sentiments it evokes are so personal and truly beyond words.
