I was wondering if Steven or Lee would have rumbled by question ( had they participated ) as I'd taken it from an episode of QI a couple weeks back.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

And Martijn, what is your contribution? On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -
- CommentTimeJan 3rd 2012
Well, here's the thing.
As I recall, another American athlete won an event the day *before* Owens were to run.
At this win, Hitler indeed upped and left.
German High Command later cited a 'previous engagement' for the sudden departure, but it was generally understood Hitler indeed wanted to avoid having to congratulate an 'inferior race'. The next day, when Owens would run and was tipped as a favourite, Hitler wasn't actually in attendance at all!
Again common wisdom has it that Hitler skipped the event to avoid a possible repeat embarassing diplomatic pickle.
So the answer FALSE is true in an absolute sense (Hitler was not present, so could not walk out), but my answer was grounded in the understanding that he almost certainly would have walked out, had he been there!
...and now I'm gonna look up whether I recall correctly or just made a fool of myself.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

Common wisdom is not common fact, much as I believe that to be right. Anyway, have a look at the wiki entry which pretty much follows the same version as I heard on QI.
What comes over as exceptionally sad is how appallingly he was treated on his return to the USA.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -
