Alan, did you try my suggestions?
That would *really* offer a good baseline!
I played about with the security stuff.
I disabled the "real time" monitoring parts of AVG but that didn't seem to help. I can't seem to temporarily switch off AVG and would need to completely uninstall it to switch it off. I've not done this yet.
I've disabled ZoneAlarm and switched on Windows' own firewall and that seems to have improved it (the loading of this site) for the time being. I'll see how this goes.
As for the Amazon issue, I'm at a loss to know what's going on. As well as the ordering problems, Amazon doesn't seem to be able to recognise that I already have their downloader installed - even when I download it afresh. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Right-clicking the icon and choosing "exit" doesn't do it?

Disabling ZoneAlarm didn't seem to help - I'm having to refresh the page after I've added comments in order to get the post to appear.
I spoke to an IT guy at work about this problem and he suggested that the site may not be optimised for browsers such as Opera and Chrome. But Bregt says that it works fine when he uses the likes of Opera.

Switch off Windows Firewall as well for the test: it's wreaking havoc with LOADS of things, internally and externally in my experience.
The "optimization" remark would make sense ...but only if everyone else's Opera and Chrome would be having problems, and I have NO issues with Chrome and MainTitles whatsoever.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

That's very true.
It's funny but the problem seems to be an intermittent one. But there doesn't seem to be a pattern. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

What would be a really good test is to use another PC/laptop through your personal connection.

I may just have to lay off the likes of Opera and Chrome here.

You might try IE7 instead of IE8. I had trouble with 8 but 7 runs pretty good.

Now I'm looking to get some sort of anti-virus software for some protection. I've read that Avira AntiVir Personal is a good option in terms of protection. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Browsing here using Chrome with no AVG and ZoneAlarm gave me no problems the couple of times that I tried to post comments (above).
So it seems that my antivirus/firewall combo may have been the problem. I've just downloaded Avira AntiVir and I'm just going to install this to see if this has an effect. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

you don't need avg nor zonealarm.
Just avira, uninstall everything else.
uninstall unwanted programs and registry leftovers with your uninstaller or something similarLove Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Cheers, Demetris.
I've done away with AVG and ZoneAlarm (as well as Photoshop) using Revo Uninstaller. Rebooted and then cleared registry leftovers using CCleaner. Downloaded and installed Avira AntiVir. And I'm just about to reboot my PC and then update Avira.
Will report back later! The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Alan, also go to start-run-type "msconfig" press enter.
go to "Startup" and UNCHECK everything that you don't need to start up with the computer, i.e. everything that it's NOT an anti-virus program.
press "aply" - ok, restart.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
