    Yeah, avg is the best free antivirus around. Pretty good and lightweight on computer's resources.

    I use the also free Avira Antivir and is pretty good too. No problems until now.
    Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you

    I usually found that the best way to test your antivirus system is with portable usb flash memory thingies you KNOW to be infected with viruses. Or with known infected warez or porn sites. THEN you can either say your antivirus is good, or cry while formatting wink

  4. I'm using AVG Free Edition, ZoneAlarm and I sweep my system regularly with Spybot and Ad-Aware. May be a bit OTT but it seems to work.

    I believe that my Windows Firewall is disarmed (I think that ZoneAlarm is set to automatically disable it) but I think that WIndows Defender is working in the background.

    You can disable that junk. Windows defender.

    Go to "start"
    type "services" and run it
    Go to windows defender --> properties --> startup type: select DISABLED --> apply --> ok

    then press the windows icon on the keyboard + r (or start-run)
    type 'msconfig', enter
    go to startup, find windows defender and UNTICK it. Along with some other junk that is surely automatically starting up with your windows and which you don't need.

    Also, a crucial tool is ccleaner, free and the best. http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

    It does absolutely nothing than eating pc resources. You don't need it if you have a third party anti virus system that is good. Same goes for windows firewall and other vista junks you don't really need. I spent countless hours of tweaking windows vista ultimate through own experimentation and online forums and believe me, i came up with the fast and stable system i need. Out of the box, they simply suck.

    I thought so. If you go to control panel --> administrative tools (if i remember correctly) and then services, you'll find the windows defender service in there too.

    The rest (start-run-"msconfig") is also valid for win xp sp3

  12. I've taken care of Defender - though I am a little unsure about it.

    I suppose that keeping AVG updated daily and automatic updates set for ZoneAlarm and the regular checks using the two antispyware apps should be enough...

    Yeap. You can always experiment and see what you like and what not, and you can always re-enable something you previously halted. But not everyone uses their pc in the same way. However, there are stuff that are known to do nothing but draw back the pc performance. smile

    Norton now quietly deletes keygens and other java programs without the option of excluding them or getting them back.
    I will NEVER use Norton again.

    Why did you use it in the first place? Srsly, it's plain idiotic.

    OH AND WARNING: AVAST ANTIVIRUS (free and pro) do this as well.

    Nobody needs an antivirus if he / she really KNOWS internet. I am confident that BREGT is one of those people. And on the other hand, even if you HAVE an antivirus and you're a total noob, amateur or stupid, you'll still get a virus.

    Nah, i've been using windows without anti-virus and firewall for about 2 years with no problems. Problems began when i started bringing work at home with clients putting the virus-infected usb flash sticks in my pc and thus i reinstalled eset internet security suite. No problems since. But how is Windows more prone to spyware if you're not going right INTO them?

    I played Battlefield Bad Company for such a long time at the weekend that the HUD (the health, ammo and radar bars) have burnt themself onto my screen.

    Is there anything I can do? confused *worried*

    Is that a plasma screen you have Anthony? Because I can't recall hearing about this phenomenon on LCD / TFT displays. In any case it sucks and if your TV is one of the older models you're basically screwed. My dad has a newer model plasma and uses the teletext system quite intensively, lucky for him burn-in is a thing of the past.

    What I found is:

    Q: What can I do to remove a burn-in image on my plasma?

    A: If the burn-in is mild, find the white screen setting in the menu (2004 models: FEATURES -> OTHERS -> WHITE SCREEN) and activate it. If the burn-in is severe, it may take a long time to go away; or it may be permanent.

    Not very helpful I know... shame
