It's never occured to me before. I know iTunes keeps an automatic backup but it hasn't done that in over a month.

Where do you check this is being done and/or how do you back-up your library file? From within iTunes?

I imagine Erik means clicking File > Export Library and saving it as an xml (?) file.

If you look at the iTunes folder in My Documents it will contain a folder called Previous iTunes Libraries.

I'm not sure how often it backs it up or if it is possible to control the frequency it does this.

I can't remember the file structure on the PC but there is an iTunes folder in your My Documents folder that contains all of your iTunes information in the form of a iTunes Library.itl file and an iTunes Music Library.xml file. You need to back up that folder, especially those files, regularly. Since I'm on a Mac, Time Machine does this for me every hour.

I back up the folder, but the backup only contained the backup. wink
  3. Thanks guys. I found the appropriate folder and this contained "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" files that were created this afternoon.

Since this folder is in my My Documents it will be being backed up when I do my regular backups.

Does anyone have recommendations of iTunes-only releases worth looking into. For example, I came across Bear McCreary's game score to SOCOM 4 that, as far as I know, is an iTunes-only release.

See, this sort of thing is really beginning to annoy me: I've just noticed that La-La Land Records are due to release a 2-CD release of SOCOM 4 later this month.

    crazy

  5. I'm sure there's not going to be a helpful answer to this - because it is about searching in iTunes.

Is it possible to find new releases the last week in iTunes? I go to music>soundtrack and scroll down to select "new releases" and then re-order them by release date and the most recent hit is almost a month ago. And it looks like it's a featured album rather than the most recent.

For example, I know that Mikael's most recent Screamworks Records release, Dawning, is released today. And searching in iTunes I find it no problem. But trying to find it as a title that is released today is almost impossible.

It looks like that, if you know something is released and you know all the details then it is relatively easy to find. But if you are not looking for something specific, and only looking for an overview of what's new on offer then forget it.

Is this a fair assessment of searching on iTunes?

  6. On my Home page of my iTunes Store there is a "Purchased" link which, if I select it, takes me to a list of albums I have purchased.

When I view an artist I am presented with a list of the tracks I have purchased of the selected album. On the right-hand side of the list of tracks (in the final column) there is either a "Downloaded" button (which I can't do anything with) or there is a symbol - a cloud within which there is a downward-pointing arrow.

What does this mean? As far as I understand it, I have purchased these and I already have them on my PC. And why are some apparently downloaded and some not?

    Thanks.

Concerning the cloud... this is probably the info you are seeking.
    http://www.apple.com/ca/icloud/features … tunescloud

As for the download button... maybe it's to upgrade your purchases to a higher bit rate... which will still cost you money to do so.

  7. Thanks Erik, that's helpful.

For me, I only have one Apple device - iPod - and so my tracks are just bought, downloaded to my PC and I transfer them to my iPod (all manually).

But what I don't understand is that some of the tracks are marked as "downloaded" and I can't do anything with them. It is as if iTunes thinks that I have already downloaded it from iCloud. Which is weird because I haven't treated these tracks any differently from the others.

Maybe I need to delve into Apple's iCloud iForum?

  8. I have all my favourite tracks listed in iTunes but whenever I want to listen to entire scores I tend to use MediaMonkey. I know that I could easily add my entire collection to iTunes by (I assume) asking iTunes to monitor the specific part of the hard disk where these files are.

I have a couple of questions:

    1) If I have all my CDs on an external hard disk, will iTunes "throw a wobbly" if the hard disk is not connected? Would iTunes list all the tracks it found on the disk at a previous scan of the disc but would just not be able to play them if asked and if the disk is not connected?

    2) If I wanted to make a "smart playlist" of all these complete CDs could I set up a rule for the smart playlist purely on the grounds of the location? The reason I ask this is that my favourites are collected in a smart playlist using the genre "soundtrack". If I added all my CDs to iTunes and, if they are all genred as "soundtrack", would they be added to my current favourites smart playlist?

  9. Hot on the heels of the help I received for my previous questions I have come back to ask another!

My "iTunes Media Location Folder" is set as "**musiciTunesiTunes Media", so I assume that everything in there is included in my iTunes library that I can choose from to play?

Can I add another location of my own choosing to be included in the iTunes library to sit alongside the current location? Or do all the files need to be in the same folder?

  10. Doing a bit of research, I think that the answer to my question is "no".

And I think that I would be loathe to change anything in my iTunes set-up because it's all working fine at the moment.

Weird problem I'm having. I bought three albums from iTunes yesterday. Listened to the first - and then about half way through the opening track, it suddenly skipped to the second. The second played fine - but then the third did the same as the first. If I manually skip through to the point at which the track skips, I just get silence.

Then I tried out the other two albums and exactly the same thing had happened.

I have deleted the tracks and re-downloaded and now the same thing has happened again, but this time on different tracks. Very oddly, the file sizes are identical between the two downloads (even though it is different tracks that appear to have this silence).

    Anyone got any ideas?!
  11. Hmmm. I originally thought that it could have been with a problem with the files themselves until you said that the problem is the same after re-downloading but at different points.

In my experience, the files themselves may be the problem.

I bought an album off iTunes and all the tracks had skips, clicks, etc 3-4 times in each track. I contacted iTunes about it. They refunded my purchase.

I then contacted the composer himself to alert him of the problem. He was kind enough to send me "good" tracks and he said he would contact iTunes about it. I just checked that album and it still has the clicks and hisses on the clips. So, nothing seems to have been done.

Perhaps I would contact iTunes, get refunds and look somewhere else for the album(s).

Thanks - it's very odd. I can't really believe it's a problem with the files at the Apple end, since the problems were on three different albums and on different tracks the second time I downloaded them compared with the first.

Anyway, I contacted them and they've promised refunds within 28 days (odd that they can charge a card so efficiently on purchase but it seems to take a lot longer to pay a refund, but still).

Sadly all three albums were only available at iTunes and not Amazon MP3, though maybe I could find the physical CDs somewhere (haven't looked yet).
  12. What are the albums? Maybe someone has encountered the same issue.

I note that it's not just me who experienced these issues - lots of people reporting similar problems at various forums. Apple, as usual, completely silent on the issue.

Does your track time show the proper time on your media player and then just jumps part way through? Or are the tracks themselves shorter than they are advertised?

I recommend opening the tracks in Audacity. Look at the wave forms. Are they complete?

Is it common for iTunes to just "forget" a huge portion of your library?

I was a little confused today when I noticed it only contained music from 2006 onwards.

All my files still existed in the iTunes folder and I just had to import them again. Maybe the library file became corrupt.

This is the most logical answer. I backup my library file weekly just in case something like this happens.

  14. Erik, sorry to be a bit of an idiot - but I want to make sure that I have this right - but if I go

File > Library > Export Library and then save the *.xml file, is this backing up the library file?

And the library file is just some sort of file that holds the location of all the tracks which can be used (somehow) to "bring back" all the iTunes tracks?

I was a "late adopter" to iTunes and so a few of my tracks are not in the default iTunes folder but are in a couple of other folders. I direct iTunes to those folders and have them added alongside the tracks that are automatically added to iTunes (and therefore added to the default folder where iTunes puts all the media files.)

This sounds correct. I don't think iTunes can delete files by accident, simply forget where they are.

Anyway, if you can, back up your entire hard disk.

When you re-imported the tracks did they have the old stats as before; e.g., play counts, etc? Or were they showing "0"?

  16. I'm trying to think ahead to when my laptop hard disk is getting too full with all my iTunes library tracks. I want to move my files to an external hard drive and have iTunes know where they have all gone. I am assuming that this is going to be tricky and would like some advice on how best to do it.

For all the files I have in my iTunes library about 50% are in the default "users/username/My Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music" folder. However, the remaining (early tracks) are in three different folders in the "users/username/My Music" folder and iTunes is linked to these folders via the settings in iTunes itself.

    Is the way to go:
    1) try to migrate the files over "as is" to the new drive and re-associate music in iTunes
    2) move over the files to the external hard drive and create a new library with all files in the same place
    3) use the opportunity to dump iTunes as my media player (& only for iTunes store access) and use a different media player?
