Oh, I liked Licence to Kill. I think all the Brosnan films other than Goldeneye are execrable.

What a shame that Brosnan's best Bond film has such an awful Bond score.

I was just thinking about memorable Bond villians and, unbelievably, I have to go back to 1985 to find the last half way decent and memorable Bond villain with Christopher Walken as Max Zorin, since then it's been a procession of lame charisma-less nobodies.

For most people this depends on which Bond you were brought up with.

  1. I was lucky enough to have seen literally all Bond movies many times. Sean Connery wins, I'd say Craig is next to me. Then would be Roger Moore, then Brosnan, then Lazenby and Dalton together.

With all this actor discussion there is something I'd like to delve more into, aside of the actor discussions. Has anyone noticed how Bond movies basically change according to the changes in action movie trends? They were always - filming-wise - state of the art. Watching all the Bond movies chronologically shows how action cinema changed. I think that's pretty interesting.

The difference is that Bond was once the leader when it came to action, now he merely follows.

  2. Yes, the series don't define action anymore. Bourne does.

Here's Ian Fleming's image of Bond for an early cartoon newspaper strip

    JAMES BOND

Apparently it was based on Fleming himself and Hoagy Carmichael.

    HOAGY CARMICHAEL

I agree with you though D, SEAN CONNERY it is! I believe that Fleming wasn't too taken with the idea of Connery as Bond but after seeing Dr No was so won over that he even gave Bond some Scottish heritage in his next book.

Because I didn't grow up with these films like apparently everyone else, and I saw most of them for the first time only a few years ago. I've always found them very cheesy (except certain particular moments) and not my cup of tea. So more about the films than the actors portraying Bond, I guess.

I've grown up with them, and although I do have some nostalgia towards them due to that, I'm still not a Bond fan. I'm a fan of Barry's themes, most of David Arnold's scores and Casino Royale - but I'm not a Bond fan at all.

I'd agree about QOS there, since the action was an unwatchable version of BOURNE. But CASINO ROYALE is much closer to the classical shooting style of the Bond second unit over the last few films.

On Bond villains... I liked the idea of Sean Bean as 006. Mads Mikaelson (or however his name is spelt) was good in CR, because, a bit like Bond himself in that film, he was finding his way in a world where people actually try to kill him.

I do agree about ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE though. Fine film. But for whatever popcorn's worth, I'd still go with CR personally.

  4. I asked David on Twitter if he had been signed on for the new Bond but he was non-comittal, "They've not announced anything yet" was his reply.

    He, he....it would seem so.

I don't know why, but I never really connected to these films. I remember them being on tv during my childhood, but after having seen bits and pieces of them, my attention drew elsewhere. I think the only Bond film I saw in full was in the early 90's or so when I saw all of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. That was ok, but it didn't spur me to check out more of the old ones, only the Brosnan ones that were going on at the time.

Then in the mid 2000's, I decided to go through them all (since it was embarassing not to at least have seen this pop cultural phenomenon), chronicled in this FSM thread:

    http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/p … ;archive=1

However, having no nostalgia connection to them, and judged against more contemporary, serious action films that are more to my liking (BOURNE etc.), they just came off as cheesy, campy etc.

I know I'm the odd one out on this, but there you go.
    I am extremely serious.

I go by how much fun they are to watch which is why I have no problem with most of the Roger Moore films.

Licence To Kill is miserable and isn't helped by Michael Kamen's gloomy and dense score.
