    Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade

It will never seize to enchant me!

    The finest orchestration ever.

    I'm sure that's arguable....but not by me.

There were many great orchestrators, Maurice Ravel immediately springs to mind and, of course, he was very influenced by Rimsky-Korsakov.

  1. I feel like posting some tracks I am randomly listening to. First up:

"You To Me Are Everything" - The Real Thing

    A good start!

  2. Now...

"Ode To My Family" - The Cranberries

This band has done some great tunes but the singer's style of changing pitch at the end of a line and in the middle of a sustained note can get a bit annoying quite quickly.

    I wonder what's next?

  3. "Sandy" - John Travolta

A window into parts of my personality that I may have wanted to keep to myself?

    Anyway, moving on!

Cranberries used to be all the rave in the 90's. Find them a bit boring myself, but I have a friend who's a huge fan.
    I am extremely serious.
  4. "Coz I Luv You" - Slade

Not heard this in years! The great thing about random plays!

There are only a handful of tracks of theirs I actually like. Being able to buy downloads rather than albums would have been useful back then.

  6. "Small Blue Thing" - Suzanne Vega

Following convention at the time I went through a phase of liking female singer/songwriters. And songs such as this bring back such vivid feelings of a time in my life.

  7. "Waulking Songs" - Blazin' Fiddles

Scottish music for the masses? Maybe, but they are such a good listen in the car to remind me of the Highlands.

  8. "I'll Never Turn My Back On You" - Terence Trent d'Arby

Another track that fills me with memories from my past. A bit of a one-album wonder. But a great album this track is from.

  9. I think I'll sign off with:

"Run With The Wolf" - Rainbow

Looking back at those random tracks I may have lost any remaining respect I may have had. The bands may not grace any Hall of Fames but they certainly are a snapshot of my likes from my past.

    And just started?

"No One Knows" - Queens of the Stone Age

NP: EN CONCERT - HOUSTON/LYON (Jean Michel Jarre)

Great live album from two classic concerts in the 80's...maybe my alltime favourite Jarre album too.
    I am extremely serious.
  10. Favourite Jarre album? Goodness. I have this CD somewhere but I prefer his studio albums. I usually find it difficult to get past "the original is the best" mentality. "Original" being, in this case, the version I hear first.

    Don't fret too much, Tom!

Most of the stuff is UK-centric and from the 1970s/1980s. And most people would point out that it's not too good either! Surely you've come across the John Travolta number out of Grease?

  12. I may do another 10-in-a-row later just to cement everyone's opinions on my tastes in music!

It's funny. Most people tell me I have no taste in music. confused

I remember back in the day not being able to get away from GREASE, at work, at home, it seemed to be permanently in the charts and on radio and TV.

  13. Yes, it was blanket coverage. I don't like the film but some of the songs I do like. It all came flooding back when David took an interest in the songs a few years back (it became a popular show to do at schools then for some reason.)

Yes, my friends children were involved in a school production of Grease.

I must admit 'You're The One That I Want' and 'Summer Nights' are both incredibly catchy though I'd not miss either if I never heard them again.

Edit : Just looked up Wiki and 'You're The One That I Want' was #1 in the UK from 17th June to 12th August 1978. Combined with Summer Nights they spent 16 weeks at # 1, no wonder it felt like forever to me.

  15. Here is another insight into my musical tastes:

    "Hello" - Oasis

I can take or leave Oasis. But some of their songs are excellent. This is not one of their best, but it is a good start...

  16. "Thunderball" - Tom Jones

A great Bond song from someone who can belt out a good tune!

These early Bond songs knock the pants off more recent efforts.

  17. "Bat Out of Hell" - Meat Loaf

The first time I heard this was in my biology teacher's car on the way from Falkirk to Bettyhill on the norh coast of Scotland. It must have been on repeat for the whole journey that must have taken most of the day.

At the start of the day I did not know anything about this track or album but by the time we reached our destination I loved the whole album.

Anne hates his voice but this track/album is etched as a life milestone.

    Great stuff!

  18. "Private Investigations" - Dire Straits

I think that this must be my favourite track from them. I am not so bothered about the vocals but the instrumentals are just great. Not conforming to the traditional song format and the sadness feel to it just strikes a chord.

  19. "Passing Strangers" - Ultravox

Another song born of the time.

Some of my choices may be a bit ropey, but they all have a decent tune!
