I said the following in a previous now playing thread...

Enemy at the Gates isn't a bad score... but unlike you the four-note danger motif is a irritation which limits my interest in the score. But now that I've created a suite I find myself wanting to hear the score... well, at least that suite... more often. Great recording by Simon Rhodes and I too second more large choral music from Horner!

Don't know ... Love this score.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

ENEMY AT THE GATES - JAMES HORNER

Not one of his enjoyable ones. The opening track is the highlight, after that there's a sense of boredom that sets in, mainly because Horner's inability to write anything remotely fresh or interesting. The very overused four-note motif is another example of why I can't like this one. I'm thinking of selling it, and coming from a Horner fan like myself, that must sound like a shock.

Aw shit maybe I'm just not in the mood to listen to it now. sad

Funny...I think it's one of his best. He does not write enough choral music.

Apart from the opening track, I've never enjoyed it to be honest, not even back when the score was released, and the months after that. I will listen to something like Deep Impact and The Four Feathers and enjoy them tons more.

Enemy at the Gates is a difficult score to a difficult to watch film. Dreary is the word. It's about setting up a hopeless atmosphere for a hopeless battle. The Russian influences (the score is ridden with Prokofiev and Shostakovich influences, also with their bitter sense of irony) set up the place and emotions very well.

NP : Medal of Honor : Frontline - Michael Giacchino

This is the Giacchino that I love !
He did an awesome job on the MoH games .

I'm wondering why Hollywood hasn't picked up the franchise yet ?
It would make an awesome movie with the right people at the helm .
And with Mr. Giacchino composing off course ! wink

I did cool I actually heard this when it originally broadcast but it was great to hear it again ( plus I barely remembered it ), very interesting to hear what music a film composer would take to a desert Island with him, does anyone here know if any other film composers have been guests on Desert Island Discs?

I've had a quick look back over the last few years (back as far as 1986) and I noted the following:

    Randy Newman: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/des … 1019.shtml
    George Fenton: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/des … 0511.shtml

    Richard Rodney Bennett: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00943zz
    André Previn: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0093979

    Not that many.

It's actually the other way around. Spielberg wanted a game series based on Saving Private Ryan, and MOH was conceived.

  8. ULTRAMAN GREAT - SINSUKE KAZATO

Tremendously rousing, with memorable themes and epic moments. This was a blind buy after reading a review of it on Jon Broxton's old Movie Music UK site. The review is now taken off-line, sadly, but it was a glowing one.

  9. A lot of the years have not been filled in on Wikipedia so this isn't a complete list but I would not expect there to be many more. It would be interesting to do a breakdown of what type of people have been featured on the show over the years.

I used to listen regularly when I was younger, anybody who was anybody appeared on that show ( originally hoasted by Roy Plumley ) from Rock n' Roll royalty to great directors, Hollywood legends to minor part soap stars.

  10. KILLZONE 2 - JORIS DE MAN

The orchestral cues... Joris is the man! punk

The mix of a splendid theme, emotional fanfares and choir is something I can really appreciate. I'm sincerely hoping Killzone 3 will have the same dramatic / exciting impact as this.

Have you ever watched any Ultraman series or films Gilles ?

I was big into tokusatsu some time ago , but the lack of time
to watch all those series mellowed it down a bit .
Of the newer Ultraman series my favourite was Ultraman Nexus .
Too bad the series was cut short ... sad

NP: Constantine and The Cross - Mario Nascimbene

I was listening to this little-known Nascimbene score (from a film I've never heard of) when I was surprised to hear a theme that would be used again 4 years later for his better-known film One Million Years B.C. - take a listen:

Constantine and The Cross (about 19 seconds into clip)

One Million Years B.C. (about 55 seconds into clip)

It's not unusual for composers to reuse material but I'm so familiar with the Raquel Welch film and its score that it was a bit of a shocked moment to hear it again. Nascimbene expands the theme for the dinosaur picture.

  11. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events - Thomas Newman

This CD is pretty eclectic, and not at all my favorite Newman album, but I love "The Letter that Never Came" of course. I also really like the simple piano of "Resilience". Newman is a master of simple piano (see also Meet Joe Black). I will also say that the track titles of this album are brilliant.

I used to think like this, but then I realized that David's scores were pitch perfect accompaniment to the kind of Bond that was in those movies.

NP: The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: Joel McNeely

This is a CD I edited together using just McNeely's episodes.
Really fun music by a very clever composer.
I know there's a lot of temp track love going on here with his "tip of the hat" (shall we say) to other composers including Williams, Horner, Goldsmith, Broughton, Morricone etc. But he re-orchestrates it so well!
    Great stuff! cool
  12. NP: Abrazo Bajo La Lluvia - Sin Fin (Ángel Illarramendi)

    Gorgeous.

Very quirky. Reminds me a little bit of Sherlock Holmes. By the way, it's very cool to hear woodwinds in this cue.
