    NP: QUO VADIS (Miklos Rozsa)

The Tadlow rerecording. Excellent, of course, but much, much too long and what is excellent eventually gives way to 'grating'. If anyone has a neat 50-60 minute program lying around, give me a holler!

    You're welcome.

    I'm confused.

At first I thought you had linked to an album with a shorter program that I could use to program my own set. But then I see that you ALSO linked to a massive 2CD set. Or am I missing something?

    Yes.
The fact that it's very, VERY far from "massive": had you looked properly (he said with mild reproach) you would have seen it's a 40-odd minute recording of Quo Vadis (on disc 1), coupled with a 40-odd minute rendition of Ben-Hur (on disc 2).
Both suite rerecordings (released on LP originally) by Rozsa himself feature outstanding sound quality, and offer nothing but the most exquisite highlights.

Incidentally, it's a shitload cheaper on DuttonVocalion's own site (just a tenner! You're MAD if you don't get this.)

It's the very best version of either score EVER to see the light of day, bar none.
Both albums are roughly sixteen stars out of four.

To be sure: I certainly greatly appreciate the love and effort gone into the Tadlow rerecording...but I never played it after the first spin. I find its worth to be more archival than enjoyable).

Yup. I cannot sing its praises enough!
If you own just one Rozsa album, this should be it.

The Imitation Game - Alexandre Desplat

Maybe because it doesn't scream out for attention, but does a simply marvelous job at capturing the loneliness of Turing, the majesty of his accomplishments, and the workings of both a human and an artificial brain and how they work together in perfect harmony, this may, indeed, be Desplat's best score yet.
  1. The Last Starfighter - Craig Safan

I have the sweetest spot for both the movie and the score, but while I'm happy that a complete version is now available, I don't think that it offers something spectacularly new, just more of the same. Nice new moments with that same old theme, and a lot more Mickey-Mousing in other scenes. This is one of the few occasions where I think that the very first and much shorter release had nearly everything I'd want. The most beautiful tracks were already there.

But I will say that this new release is a very nice way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this classic and memorable score and movie. If you don't know and love it already, give it a try. I suggest "Into the Starscape".

NP : SCREEN THEMES - John Scott & Various artists

I had the LP once and am now listening to this on Spotify. I can't remember now which tracks are taken from the original scores and which ones were newly recorded by John Scott except for John Barry's MASQUERADE which at that time had never been released, other composers represented here include Scott, Bernstein, Conti, Kamen, Silvestri, Horner and more.

Right now is Jerry Goldsmith's CRIMINAL LAW ( definitely from the original score ), a score I've never liked.

Yes it is! cool The briefest track on the album is Nile Rogers COMING TO AMERICA which is a superb 1 minute and 35 seconds long.

    NP: SAMPLER (Mike Verta)

This guy knows his pastiche! I love the BATMAN - THE SIMULATOR RIDE track, for example, which sounds like Danny Elfman (obviously, since it's using the original theme) if it had been channeled through John Williams' style.

Never heard of that compilation. Just bought a used copy for next to nothing.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  3. NP - TARZAN - David Newman

This is good. It's great to hear David Newman scoring on this scale again.
  4. I just listened to that the other day, not sure how it managed to slip by me this year...Very enjoyable indeed (it's my first David Newman score, actually). It reminds me in a lot of places of Andrew Lockington, in that it has the feel of a 90s adventure score but with a few more modern touches. Like Lockington, Newman acquits himself with those "modern touches" quite well, though, better than many other composers in that situation.

The one thing I think Tarzan could benefit from is a stronger main theme, though.

It has a main theme? I didn't realize that. I listened to most of the tracks probably 10+ times and it all just drifted by, pleasantly but anonymously.

You compare it to Lockington and I'm not saying you're wrong but one thing Lockington scores always seem to have is a solid, obviously identifiable main theme. Even if certain people hate them.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

    PORNO GROOVES | the upstroke

Funky beats, groovy shaky music! Tracks with names like Greatful Head, Two is Better than One and In My El Camino heavily breath explosive pieces of joy! Excellent music during work.

The main theme gets a good reading right at the outset of "Take Me to the Meteor" (well, about 15 seconds in). It doesn't quite stick in the head the way a Lockington theme does, though, I agree.

I'm shuttering at the Lockington comparisons so I'll just forgot you said that. Anyway, pick up THE PHANTOM immediately. It's just one of the finest comic book film scores of all time!

Good God man. The theme is AWESOME! Are you one of those people who can't hear the themes in Elfman's Spider-Man?

    On that we agree.

While TARZAN came in 5th in the animation category, that was more because of my lack of exposure to animated films last year than high praise. Mostly, I found it too bombastic and busy. But with the occasional highlight.

    Paper Planes Nigel Westlake

Although not quite as good as Mica Levi's score to Under The Skin, this has quickly become a last-minute top score of 2014.

I'm considering it a 2015 score since all it played was film festivals in 2014. It's official premiere was January 15th.
