  1. An update on Kamen's score to "X-Men" which LLLR had vaguely hinted at a year or two ago:

    It's coming hopefully in 2017.

So, we'll finally get to hear Kamen's score as intended before it was changed.

La-La Land Records, 20th Century Fox and Fox Music proudly present the world premiere release of orchestral score from the legendary animated FOX television series FAMILY GUY. Composers Walter Murphy (TED 2, TED, AMERICAN DAD!) and Ron Jones (AMERICAN DAD!, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, DUCK TALES) have fashioned some of the most exciting and complex orchestral music ever composed and recorded for television. Swing, Jazz, Broadway, Big Band and Film Score genres collide in expressive, colorful bursts that have become a hallmark of this long-running and classic comedy series.

Show creator and performer Seth MacFarlane explains, “Both Ron and Walter played the show as if it were a completely sincere ‘Leave It to Beaver’ or ‘Donna Reed-style’ wholesome comedy. And it just worked really well… (The music) was always the most fun part of the process for me.”

“Seth is really a collaborator,” says composer Walter Murphy. “Most producers and directors really are not that musically astute. Seth is completely up on everything, and reads and writes music himself… We like the same kind of music in film scores.”

“It is always the greatest pleasure and honor to create scores for Seth, Fox and the huge world audience that enjoys ‘Family Guy!’” remarks composer Ron Jones, who hopes fans will find new appreciation for the music on this release. “I think it will be like a fun scavenger hunt. It’s loaded with motifs and little licks and things that are connected.”

Produced by Dan Goldwasser, Walter Murphy and Ron Jones, and mastered by James Nelson, this special, limited edition release showcases suites of some of the finest Family Guy score cues from seasons 1-4, including such long-sought after tracks as the Chicken Fight music from “Da Boom” and the Sperm Wars cue from “Emission Impossible,” among many, many others. Exclusive, in-depth liner notes by writer John Takis include new interview comments from the composers and Seth MacFarlane, and the joyful art design by Jim Titus boasts a front cover with original art by one of the show’s animators - commissioned especially for this CD release! This is a limited edition release of 5000 units – and a must for FAMILY GUY fans and any film/TV music enthusiast!

  6. New from Kritzerland:

Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere release – an important and great score that’s never been heard until now:

    THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK

Composed and Conducted by Ned Rorem

Based on the novel by James Mills, which itself was inspired by the author’s pictorial essay published in two issues of Life magazine, The Panic in Needle Park was, at the time, one of the most shocking film portrayals of the New York drug subculture. The film was also notable for the star-making turn of a very young Al Pacino just a year prior to his great breakthrough in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. Also starring is Kitty Winn. The director was Jerry Schatzberg, who uses the precision of a documentarist to turn this fictional tale into a gritty depiction of reality. It was and remains an astonishing piece of filmmaking and a time capsule of what it was like in that location (Sheridan Square aka Needle Park) during that era.

Although the film plays entirely without music, The Panic in Needle Park did, in fact, have a score that had been recorded, provided by noted avant-garde composer Ned Rorem. The American-born Rorem was a versatile force in contemporary music: he wrote operas, symphonies, chamber music, many celebrated choral pieces and songs, as well as publishing his marvelously entertaining journal The Paris Diary of Ned Rorem (1966) which was followed by several other published journals that highlight the composer's day-to-day life and creative process.

But when Schatzberg heard the score, he made the decision to not use it, letting the film’s documentary-like reality play with only the sounds of the dialogue and the natural sounds of the streets and other locations. Very few people even knew about the existence of the Rorem score. Enter Gergely Hubai, who’d written a book on rejected scores called Torn Music. When he finally heard about The Panic in Needle Park, he went on the hunt and found that a copy of the tapes had been sent to the Library of Congress, and that a CD-R of those tapes was in New York. He managed to get it, and then worked with Twilight Time’s Nick Redman to include it on the Blu-ray release of the film.

It’s a short score, but a potent one. It is, at times, dissonant and jangling, like an exposed nerve, but it’s also lyrical and quite beautiful, and also has several really great dramatic cues. Watching it against the film, it gives everything a completely different feel – while one can understand why Schatzberg ended up going without it, it does add some unexpected layers, especially poignancy, to the scenes it accompanies. Hearing it apart from the film is a great listening experience and it’s a shame Rorem never did another film score.

The unused score to The Panic in Needle Park is a major discovery, of interest not only to fans of great film music and to fans of rejected scores, but to fans of Ned Rorem’s music and 20th Century classical music, as well. The sound is mono, as recorded, but we are here to tell you that it is one of the best-sounding mono recordings ever – crisp and clear with incredible dynamic range. It has been lovingly mastered by Mike Matessino.

The Panic in Needle Park is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the first week of August, but we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

  17. An update today at the FSM board from PlantSounds on "Vahalla" (Ron Goodwin):

We do hope to release the album around October (to match the 30th anniversary of the film).
At the moment it looks like it'll be a double cd with Goodwins score on disc 1 and 60 minutes of extra material on disc 2.
Most of the material on disc two will not be by Goodwin, but the two composers who were on board to begin with, before Goodwin replaced them.
Many of their themes made it into the film though.

  22. New from Kritzerland:

Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere release of the score to one of the most beloved films of all time:

    THE RED BALLOON

Composed and Conducted by Maurice Le Roux

Upon its release in 1956, The Red Balloon, a thirty-five minute short film from France captured everyone’s hearts and imagination all around the world. It was a simple, tiny, perfect film about a young boy who finds a red balloon one fine day, and the relationship that ensues, a true and wonderful friendship between boy and balloon. And since its release it has certainly become one of the most beloved films of all time, each new generation discovering its beautiful story anew. Most amazingly, the film won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the first and only time a short film has won such a major award.

The Red Balloon is almost completely devoid of dialogue (the handful of lines are just throwaways), many scenes play with music only, and some play with natural sound only. Albert Lamorisse, the film’s writer/director, just tells his beautiful little tale as simply as he can. That he makes us believe that a balloon is a real character is a testament to the magic spell he weaves from beginning to end. In its thirty-five minutes it has everything – laughter, tears, and one of the most moving and beautiful finales in the history of the movies.

The Red Balloon featured Lamorisse’s son Pascal as Pascal and his daughter Sabine also appears. The gorgeous Technicolor photography was by the wonderful French cameraman Edmond Séchan, who would go on to photograph several of Philippe de Broca’s classics, including That Man from Rio and Up to His Ears. And the music, which gives the film so much of its heart, was by Maurice Le Roux. Le Roux’s score hits all of the film’s emotional bases and does so simply, effectively, and beautifully. The film begins with his gorgeous, lyrical main theme, and the rest of the score musically tells this wonderful story brilliantly, whether playful (the balloon tormenting the headmaster of the school, the magical sequence of the red balloon flirting with a little girl’s blue balloon), or tense when the bullies steal the balloon, and then the stunning sequence when all the balloons of Paris unite and find Pascal, and lift him into the skies for his joyous, exhilarating ride over the city.

The natural companion piece is, of course, Jean Prodromidès’ incredible score to Le Voyage en Ballon, which was the film Albert Lamorisse made after The Red Balloon – it was his first feature-length film. Prodromidès’ score for Le Voyage en Ballon is filled with beautiful themes that, like the film itself, take flight, and it takes the listener on a musical journey that is truly breathtaking.

The Red Balloon is taken from acetates and has been restored by Chris Malone, who did the unbelievable work on Kritzerland’s releases of A Place in the Sun, and more importantly, It’s a Wonderful Life. Acetates are never going to sound like tape and are never optimal, but Chris Malone did a great job and unless someone actually finds the tapes (if that hasn’t happened in sixty years it’s probably not going to happen anytime soon), this is as good as we’re going to get. The score to Le Voyage en Ballon has been on CD a couple of times, but for this release, Chris Malone has done major work on it and it now sounds better than it ever has.

The Red Balloon is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the second week of September, but we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Seems like I got TOM SAWYER in the nick of time (didn't buy it from Quartet, though).
    I am extremely serious.
  27. A comment from Quartet:

Sadly, we had received a return from one UK distributor of some titles (including a few units of some out-of-print titles as L'ingenua, The Light of the Edge of the World or L'atenzione). Fortunately from the around 80 units we had of "Fear" four months ago, we are sitting now in less of 25.

For obscure titles and, above all, Italian soundtracks, we will return to stricktly limited pressings of 300 units (in a few cases 500). The market is oversaturated and no longer works.
