    When we released the online album Marcus: The Film Music of George Shaw last year, it was met with some truly enthusiastic reviews. According to soundtrack.net, Shaw’s music “recalls some of the best moments in [John] Williams’ and [Jerry] Goldsmith’s careers”.

    Continuing to recognize the George Shaw’s talent, we are now releasing his score for the US-Mexican horror film J-ok’el, co-inciding with the US DVD release on June 24. The score won a Gold Medal for Excellence at the Park City Film Music Festival and was nominated to the 2007 Film and TV Music Award for Best Score for an Indie Feature Film. It is Shaw’s most ambitious project to date. Recorded with the Hollywood Studio Symphony, the orchestral score contrasts beautiful thematic writing with subtle suspense and pounding action. As a bonus, our CD reprises George’s inventive score from Marcus, previously only avaiable as a download.

    J-ok’el means “The Crying Woman” in Tzotzil dialect, but is based on the Mexican myth legend of La Llorona. Starring Tom Parker, Ana Patricia Rojo and Dee Wallace, the film tells the story about the J-ok’el legend (La Llorona); a woman who drowned her own babies centuries ago and whose spirit has returned to claim more children as her own.

    Anyone else gave the SOUND CLIPS a spin? What do you think? I really liked what i heard in J-OK’EL's opening titles but what the fudge kind of title is that anyway?

    I've listened to the clips, watched the YouTube videos and placed an order over at SAE...then the pre-order notice went up for the She re-recording!! rolleyes

    As for the title...read Mikael's promotional comments above! wink

    you bet ya, great score, I really recommend it and it would be foolish to believe a great score such as J-ok'el could be available while a mediocre score such as Treasure Island is long sold out. Make this a sold out score too guys, it really is a great score smile

    There's always more music coming from me!!! And thank you all for the wonderful compliments. I grew up loving film scores, and have always tried to write melodic music that I would enjoy listening to, and I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only that enjoys it!

    Several people have asked me how to pronounce "J-ok'el". Well, the "J" in spanish sounds like "Y". So it's pronounced "Yo-kel".

    I noticed that Shaw needs funds to score the ultra low-budget Indiana Jones fan film. How much have you received in donations and how many players does the project need? (Assuming he's recording it with the Hollywood Studio Symphony.)

    George is really a pretty nice man from the different times I've dealt with him. Considering the really low budget that Marcus had the music he produced was well above the expectations of anyone involved.

    Indeed, J-ok'el is one very passionate and sentimental score; Prayers for the Missing is one of the most beautiful cues i've heard this year. Deeply recommended to those who like melancholic, melodic and at places-sweeping string-driven scores with theme-driven action material.

    I really like this cd a lot too and echo the sentiments here. And as fine a score as J'Ok-el is, I'd have to say I enjoyed Marcus even more - the main music-box theme and its variations are nothing short of brilliant, like something Christopher Young might have written - and almost as good!

    This Saturday, a trio will be performing an original composition of mine that features themes from my score to a romantic drama called PURITY.

    The concert features major motion picture oboist Tom Boyd (who has played first oboe on countless favorite film scores of mine: Forest Gump, Castaway, Back to the Future, Titanic, Jurassic Park just to name a few) and pianist Marcelo Cesena join forces with the wonderfully talented cellist Maksim Velichkin and a double bassist flying in from Brazil.

    They will be performing an evening of film music. Including well known themes from Forest Gump, Beauty and the Beast, The Mission, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Rudy, and much more. They will also be performing a John Williams medley that I arranged, which includes:
    Marion's Theme from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark
    If We Were in Love from Yes Giorgio
    Anakin's Theme from Star Wars
    Love Theme from Superman.

    If you want to enjoy an evening of intimate and beautifully performed film music, check it out:
