Tarantino, in other news, said he's quiting cinema after Django. I highly doubt he will. But he said he's sick of digital cinema, digital projectors and cameras; film is what he signed for originally and now the industry wants it dead.

He could go to Europe as Woody Allen did. He is more in line with Eurpean writer/director cinema anyway.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

Did anyone take any pictures -- either sneakingly during the concert or in terms of fan gatherings?

I know there were some pictures taken by SST members Masked_Platypus and Girlfriend.
Girlfriend has them posted on facebook as far as I know. But then you would have probably seen them
    already.

This was my third Morricone concert (Gent and Verona preceeded) and although I want to spread my money into more concerts and SST-events at festivals I surely would go if the occasion arised again.
Did Williams 3 times now too, I think I'll skip that one for a while.
Rumours go that Horner is aiming for more concerts, that would be awesome.

Morricone's new score for Giuseppe Tornatore, La Migliore Offerta, has just been released as a download-only in Italy. No CD and so far no release in any other territory (just searched iTunes and Amazon and it's not available in this country).

Three other new projects - one film and two tv series - featuring new music by him are to be released in Italy in the next month and so far no announcement of any soundtrack releases for any of them.

    Unbelievable!

Time for another series of new reviews of Morricone scores, this time focusing on more obscure ones.

First up, 1975's L'Ultimo Trena della Notte: http://www.movie-wave.net/?p=3112

  2. I haven't listened to a lot of Morricone, but I really like the piece he wrote for the Django Unchained soundtrack.

Can't find Nostromo on Spotify, except for some selections on a compilation here and there. That one track is stunning!

Here's a bizarre little oddity... Morricone's official theme for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. It's not quite "Summon the Heroes"...

Very catchy and kinda silly piece. Morricone also recorded a slow version with Edda dell'Orso that I like 10 times more than the official version.

I've uploaded it here, for anyone interested-> http://www2.zshare.ma/do5fha0bvb5b

Great stuff, James! I've really been enjoying these reviews and hope that the Morricone review party isn't over yet.

Una stanza vuota is indeed a brilliant and super cool song. Here it is being performed in the movie.

Anyway, it's always strange when I see you liking some of his scores more than I do. It's a bit like Einstein meeting someone better at physics than he is; a unique event. This score I'd probably rate ***½. Sure, the song is great, the main theme is cool, and Una tromba a Dallas is a fantastic track, but other than that I don't really find much to enjoy.

Likewise, I don't feel as strongly as you about La migliore offerta. But perhaps I will warm to it.

Or...or....he has truth in his sayings? I, for one, thought the rapping was completely hideous and out of place in Django. Great movie though.

He, he...I disagree with Morricone in this case, but he's earned his right to his opinion. You would think it was a generation thing, but the French New Wavers used music in much the same way. Film music isn't always about creating coherence.

Personally, I'm very happy that we have people like Tarantino who uses music in a non-Hollywood way -- INSIDE Hollywood!
    I am extremely serious.

My Italian is limited, but I doubt he is badmouthing Tarantino here biggrin

That's a bizarre piece. I suppose the things in quotation marks were probably actually said by Morricone but none of the rest of it is true. They categorically did not "actively work together" on any of those films cited.

...and while I don't always agree with his choices, I do think Tarantino's use of music is generally excellent. It's never easy even as a fan of film scores to accept that a perfectly good score can be cobbled together from previously-existing music - so for a film composer it must be an absolutely wretched thought, so it's easy to understand where Morricone would be coming from (if he really said it).

I hope Tarantino doesn't see it. He was very excited to get a new Morricone song in his movie, and he has great respect and admiration for the guy, so he'd probably take the criticism to heart.

Morricone has aired this opinion about consistency before. It's also why he doesn't want classical pieces in the movies he scores, because he cares a lot about consistency and wants the same composer to do all the music. I'm of the opposite opinion. I couldn't care less about consistency. When judging music in a movie I just want it to work well in the scene in question, and if the music is catchy, that's a bonus I warmly welcome. Tarantino likes to share the music he loves, but he also has a talent of using it to great effect, and I like that the music often plays a key role instead of simply being hidden in the background.
