I'm glad that you're listening to a little Smetana. "Ma Vlast" is on some peoples top 100 classical lists.

Fitting at least in my opinion that L. Bernstein's final concert included Britten's "Four Sea Interludes."

The last selection on the final concert is Beethoven's 7th. Bernstein conducted the Boston Symphony.

  1. Tannhäuser Without Words (1991) - Richard Wagner (Lorin Maazel, arr. + cond.)
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra & Medelssohn Choir (Sony)

I had and loved Maazel's The Ring Without Words album for some years now but became aware of this album only a few weeks ago. I love symphonc Wagner, I am not so keen on the singing, on CD anyway. So these albums are a real treat for me. Sadly the Tannhäuser recording sounds a bit muffled. It does not reach the stellar sound Telarc achieved with the Berlin Symphony on the Ring album.

  2. NP: Pop Art: The Hits - Pet Shop Boys

Amazing! Totally amazing! One of the defining acts of the 80s. "West End Girls" seems like the decade's final verdict.

NP: AMERICAN COMPOSERS FESTIVAL 2014: FROM SCREEN TO SCORE (Various)

Audio of the May 8th 2014 concert by the Pacific Symphony & Carl St. Clair performing concert works of John Williams, Howard Shore, James Horner and Elliot Goldenthal. Williams' piece, "For Sejii"', I've had in a shoddy-sounding bootleg format for years, but this has much better sound. Great piece too! The Shore piece, "Mythic Gardens - Concerto for Cello & Orchestra" is more lacklustre. It's nice and tonal and everything, but it's a bit too "mid-range" throughout. Lacks some dynamic depth, IMO. Horner's piece, "Flight", is about as classic Horner as it gets, complete with crashing percussion, soaring, long melody lines and agitated action music a la STAR TREK 2. The Goldenthal piece, the world premiere of his "Symphony in G Sharp Minor", is gorgeous -- the slightly undulating first 15 minutes, then the last aggressive 10 minutes or so which sound like an outtake from the action music of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE.
    I am extremely serious.

Still into my Fibich cycle this time listening to his first symphony. The #1 is well constructed and reminds me of Dvorak.

Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Elvis Presley ( though this is debatable as someone spotted him working on a deep-fried peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich food stall. Someone else said he was working on a veggie burger stall but that's obviously nonsense )...
    wink

There's a MASSIVE list of artists and bands I'd love to see there...

PINK FLOYD ( A Waters/Gilmore reunion would be magic! )
    STANLEY CLARKE
    PAT METHENY GROUP
    CARLOS SANTANA
PRINCE ( who's promised multiple times and pulled out come the last minute )
    MIKE OLDFIELD
KATE BUSH ( probably no chance EVER! )
BLACK SABBATH ( with Ozzy of course )
QUINCY JONES ( oh man, to have him come and do a big band set )
    JOE SATRIANI
    JEFF BECK
    PHILIP GLASS
    MICHAEL NYMAN
    FLEETWOOD MAC
    JONI MITCHELL

....and many many more including some of your favourites like Alan Parsons, Supertramp etc!

Also HANS ZIMMER would go down very well too.

  4. I'm sure they're going to channel Elvis, John Lennon and Michael Jackson through Glastonbury Tor next year. There's a whole lot of people there who would not find such an occurrence extraordinary at all. wink

  5. NP: Casino (2001) Alcazar

This album thrilled me back then when it helped to launch the synthpop revival of the last fin de siècle. It still is a great album in the best tradition of Swedish pop music.

  7. NP: Quasar 2C631 (1977) - Neuronium

On YouTube. I never bought anything by those Spanish guys on CD.
Very ambient electronica. Comparable to what Klaus Schultze or Tangerine Dream did back in the day. They famously worked with Vangelis once in 1982.

my final review of the Fibich series. I think that James, Martijn, Pawel, Volker, and especially Tim would find his work very satisfying. Go the Naxos site and listen to the clips of all three CD's. He was quite a talent.
