Please tell me you've seen and heard both the Giacchino ones?

How amazingly good was the new episode?!
WARNING: 5X10 SPOILER ALERT!!!
First of all, it was a classical episode of Lost, with the flashbacks taking turns with the present scenes. Second of all, it was centred around one of my favourite characters: Sayid.
I got a bit worried towards the end, when I thought that Sayid was going to let them kill him (since he perhaps thought this is what he deserved?). Especially when he said "I am on my own", Jack's "Live together, die alone" echoed in my head and I thought that would be Sayid's end. I always knew that Sayid was more clever than that and would be saddened to see his character end up like that. But one plot twist let to another. Just as we thought that he was feeling sorry for Ben, he turns around and shoots him! Clever man! He is not Daniel of course, he cannot know that things cannot change no matter what he does, but overall it was a descent attempt from his behalf!
Some loose ends were tied up, such as how Sayid ended up at the mental institute where Hurley was. We found out about Illana's true identity. And we got a little more insight into the Dharma people - though the question remains: Who do they answer to? Remember when Horace said he would make a call?
As for Kate, Sawyer, Juliet, Jack - Glad to see it's all out in the open. I hope that we are truly past the whole Kate-Sawyer animalistic instincts. Just look at the way Sawyer touched Juliet's face. I never liked her, but I hate to admit now that thanks to her Sawyer is a changed, settled man. Kate's thoughts were left unfinished, implying that she might have come back for Sawyer, but I want to believe that it's something more than that (quite possibly linked to Aaron?). It's good to see Jack so relaxed for a change, although I'm certain this will go back to same old pretty soon.
Poor Hurley btw, everyone is acting so "serious" around him. Him and Charlie made a perfect duo, now everyone else seems to have Hurley as a kick-over (despite proving to be the hero more than once!).
As for Ben: Well, we all know that Ben is not going to die. Maybe the Others find him and take care of him, maybe the island heals or resurrects him, just like it happened with Locke. We do know though that Ben won't be joining the Others at this stage.
Also, this whole episode even though seen from Sayid's point of view and even though Sayid acted based on what he knows, since he just got an understanding of Ben's life, the bigger picture here is why Ben treated Sayid like that all this time. And now we know. Ben has been using all this time the man who killed or attempted to kill him. The certainty in Ben's words when he told Sayid he enjoys killing, proves that he remembers. And this is why Ben has always spoken roughly to Sayid. Perhaps he also the one to have killed his wife, Nadia? -

It was the biggest and most shocking pile of shit I've ever seen. I don't even want to discuss it. It was terrible.
On the upside we got confirmation of 3 more motifs. -

Yup. That motif that we heard in season 4 when Faraday was setting up the rocket experiment was heard again while Sayid was in Russia, the action motif from the Freighter evacuation was used again, and we heard Ethan's motif from last episode again.
TFT is still being updated weekly.

Back to the roots? Loads of people have said that but it just felt like a bunch of random scenes tied together. No coherency, just jumping all over the place. -

This description perfectly fits the flashbacks we used to be getting the first 3 seasons!!
I personally felt that some loose ends around Sayid's story were tied up but most importantly we got a descent understanding of Ben's backstory. So far we thought it was just a kid mistreated by his dad (something briefly reminded to us in this episode), who retaliated when he got the chance. But now we see it's a lot more than that. Sayid is probably the first person that Ben cared for and trusted. And look how he paid him back. -

I gave up after about the fourth episode of this season. Is it actually worth me watching the rest? I never like giving up on a tv show after investing so much time watching it, but the season started out beyond-awful. If it gets no better, then that's it - I'm out. Any advice? -

If you feel that disappointed from it, then stop watching. I did that with 24.
I personally don't think you should give up on Lost. But why do you consider it that awful though? Are you not happy with the new layout, ie. no more flashbacks? Or are you disappointed with the explanations given? Did you expect something more down to earth (eg. everything takes place in Hurley's mind?). Or did you expect something more sci-fi (eg. watch the island fly or something?). -

If you hated the first 4 episodes, you can't even imagine how much more downhill this season has gone.

Good for you! You know what surprises me most? John Locke gets resurrected in Lost and everyone says the show jumped the shark (as if Lost wasn't weird all along!).
Jack Bauer escapes death zillions of times and Tony is brought back from the dead in 24, but it's the coolest show ever!

Yes but Jack Bauer wasn't dead for several days and was magically alive when he was invloved in a SECOND PLANE CRASH on THE SAME ISLAND. Jack Bauer was "dead" for several minutes and revived with a shot of epenefrine (sp!?) -

No, Tony Almeida was dead though for 2 whole seasons!
As for John Locke, how is that any more extraordinary than John Locke walking after his paralysis, the monster, people getting cured from cancer, a cabin with a "ghosty" guy appearing and disappearing, the island being moved to another location, 3 people surviving the hatch explosion, dead people showing up again (Christian, Ana Lucia, Boone, Eko, Charlie), a guy (Richard) not aging at all, the Others appearing and disappearing in the jungle, Walt showing up when not expected or 42 people surviving a crash like the Oceanic 815 with minor scratches?
If anything, I'm surprised people did NOT see John's resurrection coming! Everything was pointing towards that direction all along. -

If you're going to do a show like Lost then really, you have to plan it from the beginning. Otherwise you end up with great big plot twists that are actually just entirely random events, with no possible explanation in any logical sense; OK, so if you have a couple of those over the course of a series then it's not too bad, but it seems with Lost that it got to the stage where there are a couple every week.
Good writers will know where they're going with something and even if they do end up making it up as they go along, at least if they had that overall plan then it wouldn't be that big a deal. But being in the situation where you build things up to a certain point and then, because you have no idea how to advance beyond that point, you just invent some mumbo-jumbo to "explain" it (or simply leave it unexplained), you're just cheating any intelligent members of your audience.
Another point, not as a big a deal, but still a reasonably big deal for me - I realised that I didn't like any of the characters. Not a single one of them is somebody I care about. If they die, I don't care. And that removes a lot of the point of watching.
I don't want to stop anyone else watching and enjoying it, just giving the reasons why I don't think I can be bothered any more. For a show which had SO MUCH potential and which surely has the biggest budget of any tv series ever, it's a real shame it's ended up this way. -

Personally, I think that all this has been planned all along. And I believe by the end of the season, we are going to understand a lot more things. For example, the time issue or the Losties traveling back in time, has always been planned along I believe. Already we are getting an explanation on some things, such as how did the Others knew so much about the Losties? Maybe no-one has come out yet to confirm it or say it out loud, but at this stage I think that the 12-year old Ben has a lot to do with it.
As for the island and of its properties, again it has to be something planned from the beginning. The show began with a plane crashing on a mysterious island. The writers HAD to know what the island was. No-one can be certain that they just pulled out the "energy" card out of their pocket. If the explanation doesn't satisfy some viewers, it doesn't mean this wasn't their original plan all along.
Obviously, things like who Kate will kiss in this episode or what a new character will exactly look like, might be called at the last minute. But I doubt that the bigger picture is planned overnight.
I think that some past episodes (esp. from Season 3) were more time-wasting that Seasons 4 and 5. Think about it: pointless walks in the jungle, mind-games with the Others, endless moments of sexual tension between Kate-Jack-Sawyer-Juliet. We are finally progressing.
As for the characters: They are all with flaws. Something which I cannot say about all characters other shows. Which is why might be difficult for us to like most of them. But who cannot like Hurley for example? The rest, it's just a matter of what qualities you find most annoying I believe or not, ie. do you sympathise more with the hot chick, the drug-addict, the hot guy, the old guy or the pregnant lady? It's a personal matter there... -
