HOUSE OF CARDS - Jeff Beal
This is music for the Netflix original series, which I haven't seen any of. I've just started the second disc of music here and it has been an absolute bore. My nature compels me to finish it all the way through, but it's mostly quiet, atmospheric, and completely unmemorable. There's really nothing going on here, and hasn't been for the last 90 minutes that I've listened to. It's performed by live musicians, and Beal's compositional ability isn't a problem - I'm sure it works fine in the series - it's just not interesting to listen to on its own. At all. -

I've moved on to THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES by Mike Patton.
I'm six tracks in, but this is so far no more enjoyable than HOUSE OF CARDS. It's a little more unsettling, and not a bit more interesting. -

NP: Now You See Me - Brian Tyler
It's like an alternate take on John Powell's Italian Job styling but updated slightly. Very enjoyable, but derivative. There's some Tower Heist in there too, but it's meshed in quite well. -

NP: THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (Alfred Newman)
The first CD in the 3CD set (which is all I ever play). Such a great score....which I just sold!
Have to release shelf space, you know, but I'm obviously keeping the digital copy.I am extremely serious. -

I was never the biggest fan of Alfred Newman. That probably tells more about me than about Newman's music. For example I needed some time to warm to "The Robe". Obviously I was looking for something Rozsa-like and so had no open mind for Newman. Well, that changed over time.
What I like a lot is the cantata "Man from Galilee" (on Silva), featuring elements from "The Robe" and "The greatest Story Ever told". Yet I can't help it: Those Newman / Darby songs always sound like western ballads.

N.p. two steps from hell - solaris
Better than their previous albums, at least the mixing isn't as chaotic and you can make out the instruments. Some very enjoyable pieces but certainly cannot be taken in large doses. For instance, 3-4 cues each time is maximum for me, granted that i'm in the mood for dynamic, loud music. When i am not, such stuff is unbearable. Damn, i am getting old, such a waste of a previous teenage metalhead

Do you listen to the Quartet edition? I passed on this one an stick to my old "Death on the Nile (Rota) / Murder on the Orient Express (Bennett)" combination by Silva Screen.

Mistake, Mistake: The omnisbus editon I own was not by Silva but by Cloud Nine Records. They did seperate releases of both titles before, a believe that's what you have.
Anyway, the content of the new release by Quartet has the exact same content, than the CNR one. I did not hear anyone rave about sound improvement so I didn't double dip.

I don't think it's even 10% Zimmer's fault, it's more to do with the general trends towards shittiness in pop music and directors wanting their films to sound like that.I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to! -
