I like the kids in the first Jurassic Park. The girl in part two was TERRIBLE. And the kid in three was rather forgettable but he didn't bother me. Having more kids in the fourth film is just tiring. And more rampaging dinos in the park is about as unoriginal of a story line that you could come up with. Was really hoping for some armed dinos. You know, running around with missiles and laser guns terrorizing the world. Pterodactyls piloted by raptors dive bombing cities. That would kick ass!

    Wow.

Well, while I admit to sometimes be annoyed by child actors as well (especially of the American variant where they try to act oh-so-grownup), I didn't think this was the case in the JP films at all. I think they all acted fine.

Guess we all have different 'trigger points' on this issue.

Yup! The scene where the kids mother slaps Brody is incredibly powerful.

Unfortunately, old Spielberg would never put anything like that in his films these days.

Anyway, there are a few films I like that star kids. ET being an obvious example. What I don't like is when they portray kids as exaggerations. They're either supersmart, super brave or super cute. Fuck that. This is what Spielberg got so right with ET, the kids are fucking believable.
  4. One of the things that Super 8 managed to do best in its Spielberg imitation attempt was get a really solid cast of kids.

Yeah, Super 8 was great for that. Very impressed by the kids in that one.
  5. Actually I think kids in Spielberg's films are almost always impeccably perfect. One of the major elements of a director's skill is getting good child performances. Spielberg's great at that, Shyamalan got some amazing performances (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable... don't remember Signs).

Well, I agree with that. You need a director like Spielberg or Truffaut or Celine Sciamma to get children to act naturally. One of the best examples in recent years is Sciamma's TOMBOY. Haven't seen her GIRLHOOD yet.

    Yes, more hit than miss.

I was trying to think of other great naturalistic child actor performances? Bryan Forbes WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND comes to mind, that, my friends, is how it's done.

And let us not forget the true face of childhood that has been accurately portrayed.

  7. I made the mistake of trying to watch even a little of a 1964 film called "Magic Christmas Tree".

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0195039/combined

    The reviews say it all.

However, the full-sounding delightful Christmas-y score, is a real highlight. too bad it's never been released. Also, this is the the only credit for the composer.

^ Nah! E.T., To Kill A Mockingbird, Moonrise Kingdom, and Stand By Me all outshine Super 8. I'll even take The Goonies and the kids from The Explorers over Super 8.
