Khan in a song by Spock about a brave little Hobbit.
    There's something epic here.
But I'll be damned if I know what it is.

I might post my playlist by Monday, I'm not sure yet whether I feel confident to make one after only 3 listens, or if I need a 4th one to be sure... *OCD*
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
  2. I am seriously losing the enthusiasm to listen to the second CD once I have finished this first one. Shore is certainly perfecting an apparent talent of saying little with as many instruments as possible.

It doesn't really feel much like I am in Middle Earth much save for a few references to the original trilogy.

  3. Following on from Tim's comment over on the Thomas Newman topic, I didn't get to the second disc yesterday. I want to love this - Howard Shore back in Middle Earth - but it just goes on and on and on. An unexpected journey indeed.

I was listening to disc one last night on CD and at one point I was wondering when the next track was due. When I checked the next track had come and gone and it was on to the next one. The score just seems to meander on and on with very little to differentiate between tracks.

Which is weird as I assume something exciting must be happening in the film at this point? I am hoping that disc 2 will be more memorable.

I've listened to both CD's and I love it. I do think it could do with some serious trimming though.

You listened to the special edition I assume? That one is too long despite all the love I have for this score. I don't know how much trimming you would do - under 80 minutes / 1 CD? Otherwise the standard edition might be what you are looking for. It works for me.

Ok, here is my super-trimmed highlight reel of the best tracks. Its 55 minutes using the Special Edition and 51 minutes using the Standard Edition. I'm not sure what the extra 4 minutes contain but its probably nothing important. This playlist covers almost all of the significant themes in the score, with the notable exceptions of Beorn's Theme, for which I recommend "Wilderland" (the second half) and the Arkenstone theme, for which I recommend "On The Doorstep" (at the very end). Those are both nice tracks but I wanted to keep this under an hour and they're a bit too meandering. So here goes:

    1) Smaug (Main Theme from The Desolation of Smaug)
    2) Flies and Spiders
    3) Feast of Starlight
    4) The Forest River
    5) Thrice Welcome
    6) Girion, Lord of Dale
    7) Kingsfoil
    8) The Hunters
    9) My Armor Is Iron
    10) Beyond The Forest (Love Theme from The Desolation of Smaug)
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!
