Hooptiedooptie.
I noticed that we had a nice 2500 posts in the other NP thread, exactly two months after the launch. That's enough for one thread. Lets continue here now and promise to not overhead these too much.

NP: Kingdom of Heaven 3CD recording sessions
Some of the cues have three alternative versions ("Battle of Karek"). Harry Gregson-Williams must have had a really hard time trying to satisfy Ridley Scott ! ...And then eventually had his score butchered and replaced by Goldsmith, Beltrami, etc... poor Harry ! -

NP:Xmen 3 (powell)
2 years ago I was crazy about this score, but now I think it's not so good like we thought.
When the action stuff, too loud in some way, is not present the scores loses his weight.
Still a good score, but far from Cuthroat, Id4 or lair. -

X-Men 3 was still last years best score, IMHO. And it still holds up!

Yeah, don't compare X-Men to these. I remember how bored I was when I first listened to it. The first 40 minutes of the CD just send me to sleep. ID4 = win. Cutthroat = Mega win.
Speaking of Lair...NP Lair - John Debney
It brings back memories of the Ubeda concert at 1.30am (even thought it was like the second thing that was played). And the fake choir had me fooled. -

I'm guessing by elenewton's post we are allowed to talk about Bootlegs/Recording Sessions/Complete scores etc here. OK, then can I say Sniper - Border post from the Tears of the Sun expanded score is amazing. Seriously, 16 minutes of action, mystery, suspense, action again, it has everything. Beautiful.
On another note, i'm really starting to feel like Transformers is one of my favourite ever scores. Almost all the tracks I love which is rare for me, that has only happened a few times before, The Last Samurai springs to mind. I now am obsessed with track 19, Optimus vs Megatron, and this coming from someone who isn't a great fan of action tracks in soundtracks. I love the cue that goes from 1:35 to 1:50. Anyone know any other tracks like this from a soundtrack? -

NP: Munich (John Williams)
If there wasn't a new Indiana Jones score coming, and (God-forbid) this was the last Williams film score, it's certainly a worthy final work. A haunting and tense mirror to the film I regard as Spielberg's best.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Can't agree that it's Spielberg's best but I did watch it again over the weekend and after each viewing I like the film more and more. But, IMHO, it will never beat the likes of Raiders, E.T., Close Encounters, Jaws, or Schindler's List.

Understandably, since they're all very good films. (And I think EMPIRE OF THE SUN would be pretty safe there too.)
What I like about MUNICH in particular:
(i) the way Spielberg gets to apply his skill at crafting setpieces to each of the killing attempts. As a result, he keeps the film more interesting, with more variety than it would have had in the hands of a lesser craftsman. Michael Kahn deserved an Oscar for the editing on this film.
(ii) he gets to relate a really interesting story about what one owes to oneself vs what one owes to one's country - and does so in a pretty unsentimental fashion. The idea of breaking with your homeland in the end is a very moving one - he hasn't moved to the land of opportunity, it's simply the safest place for him to hide and raise a family;
(iii) I love gritty espionage films like the Bourne films, CASINO ROYALE, and MUNICH. Films that go into the underbelly of politics, even on a fictional level. This film also crosses path with a really interesting time in the history of terrorism, when it was moving from left-wing European movements to the truly desperate Third World peoples.
(iv) Eric Bana has not done better work.
Particularly (i) and (ii) - (i) takes the perfection of cinematic craft that he shows in so many films, and (ii) gives it real depth, the craft being applied to a story that feels very true for our time.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

NP: Hitman (Geoff Zanelli)
I agree with James on this score. It's an enjoyable listen but it riffs too much from Powell's infinitely superior Bourne scores -- choppy strings woven through electronics and synths, the works. The album doesn't exactly rip the melodies from the other scores, but it's a close brother to the Bourne scores. The new thing Zanelli brings to the table is the integration of a male choir in tracks like "Righteous", nice touch.http://unsungfilmscores.blogspot.com/ -- My film/TV/game score review blog -

Michael... I agree with you. Munich is a damn good film. I look forward to viewing it again soon. It keeps calling my name every time I look at my DVD collection.

PS - Yes... how could I forget about Empire of the Sun. Easily, Spielberg's most under appreciated work.host and executive producer of THE CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST | www.cinematicsound.net | www.facebook.com/cinematicsound | I HAVE TINNITUS! -

Don't agree either (although Michael made some good points) but the score is surely in my most favorite John Williams' works.

And the complete is essential to see the theme devolopments...sadly it's not for a movie! so we can't match this music with the images!

Being a very different genre of film I think it's unfair to compare Munich to the likes of 'Raiders', E.T. etc, or do you mean compared to his craftsmanship in those other film?
I would separate Munich into Spielberg's canon of "serious" films such as Schindler's List, Empire Of The Sun, Amistad, The Color Purple etc.
JAWS, IMO, is in a class of brilliance all of it's own
Michael, I think Eric Bana is a superbly talented actor, I think my favourite role of his was as Mark 'Chopper' Read in CHOPPER, totally unrecognisable compared to any role I've seen him in since; he was scarily brilliant! On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

True... but when someone says it's his BEST FILM OVERALL then you have to bring in all the other films, no matter what genre.
