I think the thing that accounts for the euphoric rhetorics more than anything is that more people rank him as the #1 than anyone else; not that they feel the need to compensate for lack of proper public recognition. Occam's razor and all that.

I think there's more to it than that. If it were only that, there would be no need for such strong rhetorics; they would be perfectly comfortable just having him as nr. 1 and that's that. But there's a prevalent sense of defensiveness -- even aggressive defensiveness at times -- that I've never seen with any other composer.
    I am extremely serious.

I've encountered a few, yes, and while some of them are in the same category (the 'fringe' elements I mentioned earlier), as a widespread group it doesn't even come close.

My experience suggests otherwise. Anyway, I still disagree with your basic assertion. There's just more noise about Goldsmith because he's the favourite of so many. There's more defensiveness because there are more people who like him. Etc.

At the risk of being obtuse, here's another way of putting Southall's argument that extends it to a common cognitive fallacy:

Apparently word on the street wink is that an expanded Hoosiers will be released by Intrada tomorrow; I'm glad I never got the existing album under the title "Best Shot" (was tempted to do so in the Fnac in Paris once). Can't wait to hear it remastered and expanded, love both the movie and score, the basketbal cues are a pure delight and another beautiful trumpet theme in the main title.

Never has my opinion of a film score changed so absolutely as it did with Hoosiers. Hated it when I first heard it (and sold the CD), love it now. It's a perfect album - not sure how much more music there is in the film than what's on it, but I very much doubt whatever they do with it will improve on the existing release. I guess we'll find out tomorrow!

I played it numerous times ( I bought it on LP under the title Hoosiers ) and tried to get into it, never could, a rare JG title that I really don't like.

Well, it's said there will be an hour of music so maybe the unreleased cues are the quieter ones. Goldsmith had a habit of loading his shorter albums with mostly action cues.

Nice to finally have the main title and the 'first workout' cue, "the gym" is also a great moment in the movie and I love Hackman measuring up the huge arena basketball court to show it's exactly the same size as back home. Nice to see they've preserved the album cues. Great release and my final order for the year smile
  7. I'm actually bummed they've preserved the album cues ("The Finals" especially could use some judicious editing, especially with the double dipping of the main title cue), but I'm happy the score is more or less being presented as in the film. I love the way Goldsmith builds and uses the disparate elements as it moves along.

By contrast I'm really pleased to see how they've released this, keeping the (more musically-sensible) album arrangements but also adding in the additional music in a sensible sequence. I was expecting another warts-and-all "everything as heard in the film" (even if what's heard in the film isn't as good as what was recorded for the album) release and for once didn't get it. Excellent!

    Have a very Jerry Christmas!

I've got a few Goldsmith 2012 releases to catch up with at Movie Wave and will be reviewing them all over the next few days, up to Christmas, starting today with The Shadow:

  8. Nice review as always, JS. Gah, I've had this on the shelf for a while and haven't had time to listen. Need to remedy that.

Received "Hoosiers" couple of days ago and it sounds and plays wonderfully. I personally can't get enough of the Rambo'esque synth loops and to hear their first entry in the score with "First Workout" is just too cool. The balance between orchestra and synth works and I still get goosebumps from that transition in "The Coach Stays" around 1:15. There are many standout moments like that in this score.

Takes a special man to dribble a basketball and conduct at the same time, he was a genius after all! biggrin

Same here. I admit I never saw the film. That's because American-sports-films almost never air on TV in Germany. When I get to see the film I am sure I will admire the technical mertis of the score in context. Also one certain sports related movie's synth dominated score is one of my all time favourites and I won't have anything else walk in that territory. biggrin
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  10. Chariots of Fire?

I still have to see that film!
