An interesting snippet from this interview. http://www.empireonline.com/interviews/ … p?IID=1532
"I kept thinking and talking to Chris about what I thought the Batman character was. If there was an arc to be had, it was that he sees his parents getting killed – that’s the defining moment of his life – and he feels guilty for it. The theme is interrupted at essentially two notes: it’s never completed, because he never gets past this point. I spent three weeks removing notes from the main Batman theme until I got it down to just two notes. I am very proud of it."
Congratulations. You wrote a theme and then chose two notes from it. Fantastic. Over three weeks. -

I disagree with his assertions about Batman's character.
And it seems when the first film came out that he was saying it was a two-note theme because this was just the beginning of the story and Batman hadn't "earned" his full theme yet, which implied that he was going to add notes to his theme in later films. Anyone else remember that? -

I don't think even Zimmer remembers that. It's all verbal diarrhea.

Well, he did say in his interview that "it’s never completed, because he never gets past this point.". The whole parents dead-dark character thingy. I don't think it's anything illogical, as an approach.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

It’s always the beginning of a theme. It promises that he can become a hero or a complete man, but none of that ever happens, because he can’t get past that moment. If you listen really carefully in the first film, there’s this little choir boy at one point, and what the choir boy does, through electronic trickery and too much time spent in the studio, his note actually freezes and goes on for about four minutes. I know that’s really dodgy symbolism, but we literally froze him in time.
I think whether we like it or not, he justifies his choice pretty well.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

I agree. Everything he says about these scores make them sound like they should be brilliant. Sadly words can only get you so far. -

I think that was just an apology, not a justification.

Why, isn't it true that he's a pretty dark character, almost never convinced about his own motives and actions? and always concerned on how he affects his surroundings, his loved ones and the city?Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Two
Notes.
The ONLY composer EVER in film history to have ever gotten away with that is John Williams....and he wasn't going on and on about the shark being a tableau vivant in a metaphorical ocean of literal sea, undeserving of the fullness of a full THREE-note theme just yet due to being haunted by the dark and murky traumas of shark fin soup.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

It works for me. I hear those two notes and I instantly think of Nolan's films. As much as I'd like to hear a more traditional type of score for the films, I'm also happy with what Zimmer (and JNH) have written. Seems to work very well with Nolan's style.

Oh and here's another man to blame:
" I brought in Mel Wesson to become a bridge between sound effects and music. He does a lot of the ambient sound design, and you can’t quite put your finger on if it’s a sound effect or if it’s music."
.........or NOT to blame
In fact, i am with Steven. I am enjoying it too, but only as a continuation of The Dark Knight. But i am disappointed that they left out the 2 excellent compositions from trailer 3 and 4.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -
