    I've only watched Passion as a fundamentalist Christian. My main reaction then was OMG I really better stop sinning because its my fault they did all that to Jesus. rolleyes

    I'm curious to see what it would be like now that it no longer has that personal meaning to me.

    Sonically, this treatment of America comes across via a grouping of pedal steel guitars (instead of the usual string section), banging titanium and steel sculptures, and organizing "a who's who of drummers" in a 12-member drum circle, including Jason Bonham, Sheila E. and Pharrell Williams. "The great thing about Superman is that everybody loves Superman," Zimmer said with a laugh. "It's very easy making the call and saying, 'Hey, can you come?' I remember phoning Pharrell and him saying, 'I'm right in the middle of producing the Beyonce album in Miami.' 'Jason Bonham's in Miami, and he's getting on a plane!' Next morning, there's Pharrell, looking a little bleary-eyed."

    Hmm, this description doesn't excite me all too much yet... sounds 'cold' and 'noisy'... but will check it out either way and love to be shown wrong on this imagination of mine after reading those lines.

  9. At the risk of attracting some wrath, I was listening to "The Battle" from Gladiator yesterday and I couldn't help thinking that it all sounded a bit dated.

    Cheap-sounding synths (by today's) standards and tired MV/RC sound means that it hasn't aged well IMO.

  10. I never thought that synth's sound "dated". Do you think that the Roland Jupiter 8 on Vangelis's scores around 1980 sounds dated?

    I'm not sure what that sounds like. If this synth is what Vangelis' "sound" actually is then, if it's just being an electronic tone type then, no, I wouldn't say it is dated. Just like I wouldn't say that the synths used in early (or later for that matter) Jean-Michel Jarre discs sound dated.

    I think that the use of technology whereby early versions of a synth seem to be less closely akin to the natural instruments that they are trying to represent tends to sound dated - because of the sound not being very natural. As technology develops the synthesised sounds become more "real" and therefore become more universal (natural instruments have that universal quality).

    However, electronic instruments such as theremin or ondes martenot don't sound dated to my ears as they are not trying to represent any particular musical instrument. Their use may be dated, but not the sound.

  13. When it comes to synths, my tolerance of them is entirely based on what they're trying to do. If electronics are used to create sounds that are impossible to create otherwise, then I usually like them, so Vangelis doesn't bother me in that regard. Percussion is fine too, since drums don't have an organic tone for the most part. But if it's just used in place of an orchestra or live instruments, that gets to me. Especially when it's Zimmer doing it, because I KNOW he has the budget to get a real orchestra (and he usually does - but what's the point when he covers it all up in samples), and yet the end result still sounds cheap. If you listen to the Gladiator Waltz on the More Music from Gladiator album, it's ridiculous how similar it sounds to "The Battle".

    That's one of the reasons why I like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End as much as I do, because it's one of the few scores where he doesn't use the tactic. I wish he'd just stop it.

    The way sounds are used, especially in mainsteam electropop, may date them (of course, that may also appeal to many, like myself). But when it comes to 'art' electronica, I feel the uniqueness of the sound makes it a universal expression. For example, I love the old, 'organic' sound of analogue synths -- back in the days of Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Jarre, TD etc. If they are dated, that is of a secondary concern to how it sounds and how it appeals to me.

  15. I think being dated is fine when it adds something to the whole experience of looking back on something. I am trying to think of an illustrative example but struggling!

    Maybe the use of specific instruments in film scoring when recording techniques were so limited that the use of specific instruments was pointless because they would not be picked up by the microphones.

    I am sure that this was done. Hearing them today dates them but adds to the experience.

    Oddly enough, it would seem that Lorne Balfe is one of those who isn't. Probably the first Zimmer score since about 2004 that he isn't involved with.
