Hey Stavroula, I didn't reply earlier because you were away, but I'd like to know how this works with your job then? You will be assigned to a school by the government or something? You can't just go and apply for a job wherever you like?

What do you think of teaching 13-18 year olds?
I'll be trained to teach that age in the next two years and I think it's really exciting. Right now it's sometimes even hard for me to deal with 11-12 year olds so I still have to learn a lot I guess.

I went there when I was 5! I only remember it now you mention the name! Do they still have the pedal train ride?? That was AWESOME! They closed it before all the other rides when I went and after complaining they gave me a free keyring. biggrin

It has changed a lot since then but it's still a beautiful park. It's almost too big to visit in one day so on crowded days you really have to decide where to go and what to skip. What I like about it is that it's in the woods. Lots of parks, lawns, flowers and water and of course the whole fairy tale-ish theme of it all. There's an album of last years visit in my Facebook photos, if you take a look I think many things in them are post 1990...

Well, every two years exams are held for the people who wish to teach in the public education. The Ministry of Education announces how many people are going to be hired in each domain and the ones who have the proper degrees can compete. As you understand the people competing are more than the positions. In my case we were 5,000 for 312 positions. When you succed you wait to apply for the areas the Ministry says they need teachers of your major. They decide according to your score in the exam and other parameters (if you are married,if you have children, previous work experience and so on) where they are going to send you.I'm going to Lakonia. It's in Peloponissos and I will be teaching high school and Lyceum children somewhere near Sparta.Yes, the "300" Sparta. smile
Teaching older children is more exciting to me too.You see when I'm teaching older children I have the opportunity to expand in what I'm saying.I can teach culture and literature as well, not only the bases of the language, that is grammar and vocabulary.Of course it is difficult some times to keep them calm and under control.Especially the boys...and I seem quite young so you can imagine what I'm going through... wave

That's what our frame of reference has come to. sad
A movie based on a graphic novel.

It's good to see you active in the area that has defined the Athenian-Spartan conflict, and lives on in Thucydides'groundbreaking History. It appeals to my sense of living history and continuity (erm...not that you're supposed to go to war, obviously. spin ).

    Good luck with everything, lass.
And don't feel too bad: that idiotic lottery (hmmm..very Athenian as well, that wink ) is the same in most western countries, most notably France and Germany, I think. On the one hand it may prove an interesting challenge, on the other hand, you simply can't regulate your life for the next few years! VERY awkward!

Wow, that's really tough, to take personal stuff into account as well. I know they do it with jobs all the time, but they can't really do that, can they?

The good thing is you made it of all those people who applied, that's great! cheesy

    Yes, the "300" Sparta. smile

Hm, like Martijn I was kind of surprised that you might think that people don't know Sparta!? confused

Yeah, that's what I like right now about the older groups, age 9-12. You can really have a conversation on a more adult level. I think I'm going to enjoy that as well in high school. I often make my lessons too difficult for the young children, because I'm too busy with my own needs to think about and discuss interesting questions on life! I really have to learn how to translate to children's everyday life.

And that's exactly what is nice about the younger groups, if I manage to translate it well, keep it close to their life and experiences. It's beautiful how you can discuss subjects about life and the world with young children through kids books, games and exercises that makes them recognize the subjects in their life. On a smaller scale so to speak.

I think I'm lucky to be able to teach different ages each year.
On the other hand that means that I'm not a specialist in any age, so I still need to learn a lot.
Phew, next week around this time I've had my first new groups! Exciting.
I was a bit worried to go back to work again because things weren't going too well at the end of june but I can't wait to get started now!

Good luck with the job Stavroula and with the move! spin
