So who should be writing the epic fantasy scores of our day, Joep? Pino Donaggio? Zbigniew Preisner?

No, Eleni Karaindrou after a few bottles of wine.
They're are plenty of good composers for that type of film, but it just wasn't a very interesting score by Desplat for me. Nor was Shore for for the Lord of the Rings, even though it is not a real bad bunch of scores, just not really ''it'' . I remember Kilar was considered and that would have been smashing! -

I absolutely love Shore's LOTR scores but yeah, Kilar would have been damned good and I was very disappointed when the rumour that he was going to score it turned out to be negative. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Watching WE OWN THE NIGHT the other night reminded me of how much gravitas Kilar can add to a film. Whether it would have been better is not the contention, but there's no question to me that it would have been equally strong.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Kilar is a superb composer, proof positive that the true classical composer can in many cases produce a superior score.listen to more classical music! -

"thinks" being the key word. Kilar would have definitely given a worthwhile score. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Available-ish... an album with loads of very brief (< 2 minutes) score cues and some songs.
Not the very best representation I have ever seen.

Length is not the issue with WE OWN THE NIGHT. It strikes at just the right moments of the film.
Which suggests to me a reason why he might not have been the best composer for the LOTR. The way Kilar tends to approach a project is to write a series of themes, and then apply them in numerous variations to the film. It could produce a very repetitive score over 9 hours of film time if there weren't enough themes to sustain the enterprise. Coppola spoke of some of the issues involved in scoring a whole film in this way on the commentary of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. Mind you, it wasn't an issue for THE NINTH GATE and PAN TADEUSZ, both of which have loads of underscore, so maybe it wouldn't have been an issue for LOTR.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Thanks for the link, Bregt. Apart from the interviewer's fawning introduction and questioning style, it's a very worthwhile read for those who like the score.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Kilar would have been given the same generous amount of time as Shore on the score too.
Regardless, it didn't happen and Shore's scores to me are the very best of this century so far.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

I hope he doesn't win the Oscar because Desplat's score was an absolute floater in the film. Didn't enhance anything, IMHO. Actually, the film would have worked with out music. Like I said in the Now Playing thread I found the source material to be stronger.

I agree completely. The score was just a wallpaper of sound. There weren't many instances in the movie where the score actually helped the drama of the story. -

As usual I'm wrong. It instead went to a score that I had to cover my ears a couple of times it was so loud, and gave my date a headache due to the relentess pounding percussion. I would have asked for a refund except the film itself had some merit. Certainly not the greatest film I saw in 2008 but a good one nevertheless.
