  1. Moonrise Kingdom = in the direction of Gustavo Santaolalla?!

Let's just meditate on that for a while.

But yeah, I know what you mean about RUST AND BONE... very subdued, Santaolalla-like. I'm not against that, but I hope it's a one off too. I'm not sure I can quite say that's the direction he's going in though because that's just one score, and in contrast CLOCLO is really lovely. MOONRISE is a different sort of thing -- like FANTASTIC MR FOX, it's a lark, and I like it when Desplat tap dances. If only for his little introduction to orchestration, I'd be happy that score was done.

Perhaps he has confused "writing gay* film music" with "writing music for films about gays"?

*you know, in the happy frolicky sense....

I think the problem with Hans Zimmer is that he isn't as good a composer or dramatist as Alexandre Desplat.

    Yes.

  4. Hans Zimmer has no formal education. Alexandre Desplat has formal education. But I don't really get the point of that particular post.

    Moonrise is boring.

Rust and bone has some good parts in it now that i hear it even more. But not on the level of CLOCLO, maybe i need to watch the movie to get it.

Yeah Rust and Bone certainly isn't as good as Cloclo, the latter is very nearly a masterpiece in its suite form, one of my favorite and most beautiful Desplat pieces, in fact I'm going to queue it up right now smile

I'm guessing you don't mean the utterly fantastic score of that name by Philippe Sarde?

Also "stephanie". The other day i was playing this to my wife and asked her who he is without telling him prior, she told me at once: "Santaolalla" and i can assure you she is very well trained to modern film composers. She's a musicologist too and a piano teacher and has a very good ear wink

I have it on good authoraty that that non-existant track isn't as good as Philippe Sarde's score.

  6. You can add my authority to that. Most cues called 'le train' aren't as good as Philippe Sarde's score. wink

  7. Shame this one this didn't happen after all (now credited to Alex Heffes):

Originally Desplat had the gig. Would have been interesting to hear how he channeled the Japanese side of the story.

While John Williams is doing LINCOLN and Shore does THE HOBBIT? I'm not so sure about that.
  11. I reckon Desplat will win the year after Thomas Newman does.
He hasn't actually collected that many nominations over the years, particularly for the scores most appreciated in these circles.

CONRAD POPE on Desplat's RISE OF THE GUARDIANS score

    Conrad Pope
Off to AIR Lyndhurst for the last two sessions of percussion overdubs for Alexandre Desplat's score to "Rise of the Guardians". It's been an extraordinary 10 days recording with the incomparable LSO AD's emotional, melodic epic score. The music harkens back to the animation scores I worked on some 20 years ago: melodic, harmonic, witty and moving. I can't recall a score that I've worked on( recently at least) where all involved-from musicians to filmmakers-were so thrilled and moved. Kudos to the creative team at Dreamworks for unleashing a new "musical Guardian" in Alexandre Desplat! Grateful to have been a part. Back to L.A. tomorrow.
