Can anyone remember any other popular authors in that time frame?

Truman Capote; Arthur Miller; Maigret; Tennessee Williams, and the ones Timmer already mentioned come to mind...

We-e-e-e-e-l-l-l-l...Thor has a point, in that Shakespeare has been a best-read/bestselling author throughout the centuries (i.e. also in the 1950s)!

(Though I'm of course not sure that actually was his point. wink )

The answer is false. Erle Stanley Gardner, at least back in that era, was the #1 selling writer. As a side note he wrote over 150 books.

Of COURSE I know the man.
Had no idea he was that much of a bestseller, though.
I'd have given odds Spillane would have outsold him ten to one.

He didn't and neither did Harold "Carpetbagger" Robbins at the time. Raymond Burr at one point was a huge deal, at least in the US. Perhaps this show never had the popularity in Europe?
