Like many of Powell's scores, it's not immediately apparent just how good it really is. Well worth checking out, I think it's one of Powell's best.
I'm surprised this one passed you by? -

You can hear a lengthy suite at

I thought the score was entertaining but no where near as good as some of the best scores Powell has written.

What about Gribble's Loss and The Sacrifice? Or the end credits suite for that matter!
Powell's scores have a habit of dividing people. Or is that just scores in general? -

I tend to have to listen to Powell's scores a few times to really warm to them. I wasn't all that impressed with Rio to begin with, but now I really like that. I'll admit, MNM came out while I was ill and I listened to it a couple of times with a blocked left ear. I'll give it another try as I haven't heard it much. -
- CommentTimeOct 11th 2011
To be fair, I haven't given Rio much of a chance.
I know! I'll go listen to Mars Needs Moms! -

Yikes, 1199 new posts? I don't visit this topic very often!
I believe I saw a date in the year 2008 when I just opened it and it went to my last read post...
Anyway...
I would like to share the video that was posted in the MainTitles facebook page.
It's a Tattoo Massed Band arrangement of How To Train Your Dragon and I think it's awesome! I have exchanged some posts about it with Asier and I listened to the video many times, about 10-15 times by now I guess, and I think the arrangement is really good with a couple of highlights and brilliant use of the instruments and their limits. Oh and let's not forget that the performance is good too, because it's not easy to get all these band play and walk together.
What I liked about it too when I first heard it was the weird combination of memories from my youth and my love for film music and this score! It got me really emotional, especially when the pipers walk in. Now I need Alan's emoticon!!
