NP: Human Target - Bear McCreary

First listen. I know nothing of the show and haven't heard a lick of music but holy smokes that main title is phenomenal. I'm sorry, why was McCreary dropped from the show? Yes, I've read his blog post but it still doesn't make any Goddamn sense. It's like getting rid of Giacchino after the first season of Lost. Apparently the tone of the season 2 score by Tim Jones is less orchestral AWESOMENESS and more derivative less awesomeness.

EDIT - Good lord! shocked I'm only 4 tracks into this MASSIVE 3CD set but so far this is some of the best music I've heard this year! McCreary proving yet again why he is one of the most talented up and coming composers in the biz. Give the man a big film to score!!!

I've just finished all 3 discs (over 3 hours worth!) and it was a rewarding experience.
I thought disc 3 would just have mostly "filler" stuff but contains fabulous cues also.

Stand alone listening experience = ****
As heard in show = ?
I'm about to watch episode 1 to find out.

Fantastic! Really. What a broad score, full of strong themes (hummable!) and absolute great material. It's a fucking rollercoaster ride. Gordon's style is in there. Lots of horns blasting my speakers. I enjoy this one immensely!

It's big, orchestral, complex and complicated, it has very prominent orchestration, bold arrangements and themes, it sounds good (to me, great to others) on CD but it's exactly the kind of scoring that has great possibilities to actually intrude some type of visuals / narrative and instead of enhance and escort, it can take over the latter which isn't a pretty good thing. Interested to hear about the show with Bear's music in it.

Yeah, I saw and enjoyed your review.
Certainly seems like my cup of tea.
Will have a listen as soon as my money situation is a bit more relaxed. smile

With all the hoopla surrounding McCreary's Human Target, I should maybe try that one again?
I had a quick listen but was rather underwhelmed, nay, even bored with what I got.
Maybe I missed something the first time around?

I didn't like it either, i found it had some good parts but it's overly long and tiring, messily jumping here and there; i don't think you're missing something, it's not your style maybe? IT certainly is not my cup of tea. I am listening to his BSG (esp.3 and 4) all the time, i wouldn't change anything else he wrote so far over that for nothing.

  1. 3 discs is a lot for a first release of any kind for a television score. If there was an iTunes store edit that amounted to about an hour, I'd give it a go. Will you play any on your show, Erik?

  2. I've had a listen to Human Target and found it to be so-so. Some excellent tracks in amongst the 3 CDs. Can't comment on how it all fits in the show as I've not seen any of it.

I'd always go to a Battlestar Galactica CD over this if I wanted to hear some McCreary.

I thought HUMAN TARGET was pretty much an odd departure from his style; kinda like experimenting wildly outside his usual waters.

Interesting. It's like someone was really keen to get one of those slow haunting piano themes Elliot Goldenthal used to do all the time (In dreams) back into a film. Certainly grabbed me. I can see why people compared Shyman to Goldenthal.

i truly think he is an exceptionally gifted composer and artist. Shame that his music is of such kind and complexity as to reflect only to few. I found his writing and arrangements for bioshock nothing short but brilliant.

On Her Majestry's Secret Service (Expanded) - John Barry

I'm listening as it appears in the film. At times incredibly brilliant. The action music is of course great, and the softer themes such as for Bond and Draco nothing less than gorgeous. But some of the bonus cues are a little slow and I find them a bit boring. But then the album picks up again for a riveting ending.

Overall The Living Daylights is still for me the most totally enjoyable around, having everything I want from the Barry-Bond mix. But this one certainly comes close. beer

Oh and I've just ordered Goldfinger ! cool

  4. And now for something a bit darker...

Bram Stoker's Dracula - Wojciech Kilar

Back in 1992, Kilar made one hell of a lasting impression on me with this amazing score. His knack for lush, almost hypnotising writing is pure genius. The way he builds cues such as The Brides, The Storm, The Hunt Builds are solid proof of that. He is one of those composers who can create an entire musical world where I can feel totally enveloped by the sheer dynamics of the music. After my recent discovery of his other classical works (thanks Tim) my respect for this man has gone up quite a notch. And doesn't this score have one of the best love themes ever? All the more amazing it's for a horror film!

I love the bonus tracks in OHMSS ( but then "I" would wink ), Bond Meets The Girls, Dusk At Piz Gloria, Sir Hillary's Night Out etc are wonderful examples of how Barry injects Bond with a feeling of the exotic and erotic, something that is sadly missing in Arnold's scores.

Goldfinger is a fantastic score, big, balsy and brassy, have you heard it before Gilles?

For me it doesn't seem like that long ago that I bought this score ( when it came out in 92 ) and was one of those fantastic moments in my listening life where I got the OMFG factor, hearing the work of a composer that I'd never heard of before and being blown away on the very first listen, something that never happens to me nowadays but I still hope that one day some composer will.

So true Tim. But I wasn't immediatly going OMFG with Dracula back then as their was so many good music around. Now in 2010 I can say without shame OMFG in big bold lettering because it's a towering achievement amongst so many uninspired works. It's a score I've grown to appreciate more and more over the years and now I can say it's as brilliant as the best Williams, Horner or Goldsmith have written.

Yes... recording that program (along with Sunset Blvd, Conan and Tangled) in about 30 minutes. Hopefully will be up tonight.

I finished the first disc and found ALL of the score to be most impressive! Well balanced, inspired and thematic score with a lot of kick ass, superbly written action material. I'm plowing through Disc 2 and not once have I wanted to turn it off. Every cue brings something interesting to the table and when that main theme shows up I smile! This is probably the most fun I've had with a TV score since Battlestar Galactica. What a riot!

Usually I'd rolleyes at a 3CD set of TV music but this is a superb release with not one dull moment! I can't recommend this score enough!

  7. I'm willing to give McCreary's score a listen, even though 3 discs sounds like a lot, if you say it's worth it I'll take your word for it Erik, as I've found you are on the ball 99% of the time when commenting on interesting scores.

So how much different is it from BSG, where there was lots and lots of ambience. Is Human Target about the same?

  8. Fable III - Russell Shaw

Remember when Danny Elfman penned a memorable theme for the very first Fable game? You won't find that here, like Fable II this is a pure background score. Where ambience creates a certain mood for the game world or section you're presently in. And there's quite a bit of variety in how the music is performed. I can't say I like it, and I can't honestly say it's awful, but there's something about these theme-less atmospheric-based soundtracks I don't find particularly interesting. Their funtion in the game is more important than their function outside of it. So I won't see me returning to this a second time. On to the next (hopefully more interesting) game score.
