NP: Die Another Day - David Arnold

    Jolly spiffing!

This one has a rep as Arnold's worst Bond score but I really enjoy it. Madonna's song is beyond shit though.

If I had to rank them - and why not, since quantifying everything is what we do nowadays - it's the weakest of the bunch, but Arnold hasn't written such a thing as a bad Bond score. The electronics get overbearing in places, but there's plenty of his stellar action music, and you can tell he's having a blast.

That said, nothing will top White Knight from Tomorrow Never Dies, and I hope one day we get more music from the also excellent World Is Not Enough.

Sorry... taking a jab at Thor for some bizarre comment he made about Williams' post Geisha themes. wink

Ah, yes. This is nothing but melody. Noble, pure melody! I know it's nothing original for Williams' standards, but it's just class all the way and I can't imagine the film with a more fitting score. I even enjoy the traditional/source pieces. It's amazing how much of a 180 I've done on this since first hearing it (much like with Tintin).

I really should give LINCOLN another try, a few of Williams scores in recent years have taken time to win me around ( Tintin for me too ), perhaps my ill feeling towards Spielberg's bone-numbingly turgid and boring film prejudices me to some extent?

I don't think it's going to help, no. And I can absolutely understand that point of view, it took me a long time to convince myself to actually watch it. But I was pleasantly surprised by how captivated I was by the many great performances, and it gave me a much better appreciation for the score.

I don't think I'll need to see the film again ( more accurately I will not see the film again ) to possibly get into Williams score. JW is one of those artists that can "reveal" themselves on repeated listenings.....am I making sense?

On Williams' score for Lincoln: Yeah, I should probably try it as well, surprisingly impressed as I was with the film.
But I have to say the score didn't stand out in the film, so I'll approach it with muted expectation.

    RED KROKODIL - Alexander Cimini

This is outstanding. I've been away from this forum for a while. When I came back I went through all of Alan's reviews that I had missed. I found this one of Spotify and after just one listen, I'm sold. This music is just excellent. The first track I hated (it's truly terrifying). Given the subject matter of the film, the whole thing could have sounded like that, but Cimini went the opposite direction and provided a truly gorgeous score. The bonus track at the end from a previous film he had scored is also really good. This is one of the strongest albums I've heard lately, and it was certainly one of the best film scores of 2012. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Alan!

It's very nice. I never would have thought this would be a problem, but it just a seems a bit John Williamsy for me. A bit familiar, when I was hoping for something a bit fresh and different.

You won't find a more musical film this year. Music is the arena and the weaponry in this story. If you like Don Ellis jazz (not so much the film scores as his jazz career), check this out.

I'll take "John Williamsy" over Zimmerish/RC every bloody time!

    Rousing; brilliant.
  4. NP: Body Love (1977) - Klaus Schulze

The only score I own that was written for a porno.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

What I assume are the JNH parts have definitely grown on me, though I don't think they make up a very large portion of the album. I am more tolerant of the Zimmer material than I used to be, I'll put it that way, but really it just made me wish I was listening to Inception instead.
  7. Hard to really discern, I mean, what would you say if I told you that Myotis is actually JNH alone?

The Dark Knight - HZ and JNH

There are parts I like, but not as many parts as in Batman Begins and I don't like them as much. Which I think is opposite to most people.
