I do plan on getting it. I don't like buying just one CD though (because of the high postage cost - especially at SAE, which apart from that is my retailer-of-choice) so will hold on for something else to buy it with. Thought it may have been last night's Intrada releases, but wasn't particularly interested in them.

There you go. Another CD to buy.

lol. I don't generally buy expanded CDs any more - they're generally not for me - but then I do love The Red Tent!

The old release is enough for me.

wink Indeed. It is The Red Tent after all, one of his most gorgeous scores ever. Then again, they do all look like variations of existing material, so it's a high price to pay for 6 variations.

Perhaps this one is a better buy. I only have the old release, consisting of 5 tracks, so I'm curious what this one has to offer. Give track 1 a listen, a great march, and track 5, a bona-fide Morricone love theme. One of his best love themes in fact.

Morricone is completely bonkers, and prolonged listening to his music might endanger your mental health. I present the evidence below, but be aware that it's disturbing material, so listen at your own risk.

Based on what you like from him already, I'd add,

    Cinema paradiso
    Malena
    Red Sonjia
    Baaria
    Karol, un Papa rimasto uomo
    Sorstalanság
    (2005)
    ... aka "Fateless"
Il cuore nel pozzo (2005) (TV)
... aka "The Heart in the Well"
    72 metra

    are all MUST-HAVES

these come to mind now, but it's really difficult to limit down choices when it comes to Morricone.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

    What about his Hamlet?

I think i'm ready to star a Morricone week. I will try to appreciate his melodic and very personal voice...

    Plus is Zimmer favourite composer..

    Let's get started!

I want to add Hundra to the list. Fantastic, over-the-top epic adventure score. Too bad the sound quailty on the album BLOWS!

Guns For San Sebastian is a great Morricone western with a heartbreaking love theme for solo female vocal!

And check out the Cinema Concerto: Ennio Morricone at Santa Cecilia compilation. One of my all time favorite albums!

Have you heard The Big Gundown? ( aka La Resa dei Conti )

It's fecking fantastic, you can take mine and Martijn's word for it.

I agree very much. It might be a bit cartoonish at times, but it's a great album. Check out this suite I made of Hundra and Red Sonja: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoUsfCl2_Ew

I might come up with some suggestions tomorrow, but people have already given alot of great ones.

One advice I can give now though is to start with compilations. Morricone has several big hits from very obscure scores. For instance one of his biggest hits is the 1977 re-orchestrated version of Chi mai. There's no way you'd find this gem if you only buy individual scores. There are also many scores that are dreadful, but contain one or two stunning gems, and this makes Morricone the ideal compilation-composer.

  1. I have a bit of a problem and I'm wondering if any Morricone-types (Peter?) can help.

Recently, I came across a score by Morricone Addio Fratello Crudele that I quite liked on hearing. But there was something familiar about the theme...

When looking through some choices for 1971 I came across a score from Stelvio Cipriani, L' Iguana Dalla Lingua Di Fuoco.

Listening to the clips from each score suggests that there's a certain amount of similarity between the two. I've had a look at imdb.com and they do seem to be separate films. But these CDs are the same (save for a few extra tracks on one.)

Can anyone explain what's going on here?

Hehe, no wonder you're confused. It's the emusic site that has screwed up and mislabelled the tracks. They are indeed all from Addio fratello crudele.

You can see the track lengths here, where you can notice that they are different than the ones listed at emusic.

This is how L'iguana dalla lingua di fuoco is supposed to sound.

  2. shame

Cheers, Peter. I've contacted eMusic, highlighting the problem they have. And asking for some of my download credits back for the duplicate tracks I downloaded because of their mistake.

Shows I have far too much music!

Btw, Alan. Thank you for your question above! Without it I would never have discovered Cipriani's theme for "L' iguana dalla lingua di fuoco". I thought it was a bit cheesy when I first heard it.... well, it still is, but I dig it!!!

We can buy lots of Italian cd's here at the festival.

    Any recommendations?

    I saw these:
    Il mercenario
    Il fonda al cuore
    Il cuore nel pozzo

Buy Il Mercenario. It's a great spaghetti western score (co-written by Bruno Nicolai) with merry-making tunes and a great shootout cue. Those other two are rather standard.
  3. Il Cuore nel Pozzo is one I have. There's 1-2 tracks that are excellent but the rest are okay.

Il cuore nel pozzo is one of my favourite post-2000 Ennios. I wouldn't quite use the word masterpiece, but it's close. Il mercenario is also very worth getting. Both of these I'd rate 4½ stars and I recommend them highly. Il fondo al cuore is kinda averagy. Not bad, but kinda dull and unspectacular. Probably a 3 star score.

Agreed about Il Cuore Nel Pozzo and Mercenario. The former is just lovely. I recall hearing an inedit at Chimai (back in the day when I would download each clip they posted) and was elated when they released the cd. That was a fabulous year with Cefalonia and La Casa Bruciata being released at the same time.
